Air conditioner won't stay on.

'64 could be right, but these Malibu's also have a tendency to go through HVAC head control units, among other things. I have taken the head unit out of mine and cleaned the contacts, etc...with some success. However, from what I've seen, this is just a temporary fix. These units run upwards of $200 at a dealer, but you can get one online for just over $100. It is a really easy install.

Other common problems include:
-Cruise control modules going bad (cruise kicks off at will)
-Bad resistor on fan blower (only speeds 3-5 will work)
-Front coil springs breaking
-Front brakes wear funny, excessive wear
-Moisture in headlight housings

No diagram for 3.1 chevy malibu

These instructions are for the 3.1 L engine with serpentine belt. To change the belt, you need to remove the engine mount first. But before you do that, you must support the engine so it won't tilt after you remove the engine mount bolts. You would also need at least one helper. Here's step by step: 1. Use a jack and a long enough wooden block to cover the oil pan. Larger block will distribute the forces better. Don't use only a jack or a small block, it might crack the oil pan. Note: normally, you shouldn't lift engine by the oil pan, you should use an engine hoist, but carefully support with wooden block works. 2. Slowly raise the jack to support the engine. 3. Unscrew (Counter Clock Wise) the 2 bolts and 2 nuts of the engine mount. It's on the passenger side right next to the serpentine belt. 4. Loosen the tensioner bolt, and remove the old belt. You may have to raise the engine a bit to get a big enough gap to slide the belt through. 5. Put in the new belt and route it according to the diagram, you may have to leave it off one of the pulley because the tensioner is so tight. Don't worry, you'll slide it on later. 6. Put tighten the tensioner back on. Make sure the round metal pin goes in the appropriate slot. 7. Here's the hard part, putting the belt entirely on the pulleys. You have to either: a) Put a 3/8" ratchet in to the slot near the tension pulley that says "LIFT" and pull really hard to compress the spring, while putting the belt on the one of the pulley. Unless you are Arnold, you will need help. b) Pull a rope behind the tension pulley arm and pull while pushing with your left arm on the pulley arm to compress the spring; then get another person to hook the belt on one of the pulleys. 8. Put the engine mount back on. 9. Test run the engine to make sure you didn't mess up. Turn on accessories like A/C. If the temperature goes way up, you messed up. The water pump might be spinning the wrong way. Note: If you don't have a good floor jack, you can jack up the car, place a support under the oil pan, then slowly lower the car until the engine is supported. In this case, jack-stands or blocks under the frame are a good idea to avoid lowering too far

Does the 1998 Chevy Malibu

all motors need timing belts, not all need to be replaced, if your timing of off and you've gone the normal routes to correct timing issues, its very possible that your timing "skipped" this is a medium project for a skilled mechanic since with the newer cars you have to remove and remember all the extras you have to take off, and of course the alignment of the timing please take a moment to rate my reply, and if you need more info, feel free to contact me

I have a 98 Malibu the leaks (seems to be coming from the bottom of the motor by the harmonic balance. When it warms up, quits leaking. No water in oil. Since the water pump is behind the drum pulley,

Usually if the water pump is leaking it will wet the pulley and fluid will get on the belt. With the engine off can you shove a paper towel under the water pump area and then look for traces of coolant on it?Also,it is common for a water pump to leak then not leak over and over when it is failing.

Input shaft speed sensor or out put speed sensor . Have the vehicle checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's . This would probably point you in a diagnostic direction .

Windshield wiper failure on 98 Chevy Malibu

Hi, you wont be able to move the wipers manually as they will be locked by the motor. There is only two obvious reasons why the motor should fail again. The new motor was a poor quality replacement or there is an underlying problem on the car like the wiper motor mechanism has excessive play or is stiff/tight and over working the motor causing it to fail. you need to have a proper check over before swapping it again.

2004 chevy Malibu classic will not start- engine

Based on the gasping sound I would think that you need to check the solenoid on the starter. Sounds like it is trying to engage the starter. Make sure one of you battery cables is loose and both are tight on the battery. If you have a tester I would also check for voltage at the battery. Hope this helps.
