In the 2001 Jaguar XJ8 he trunk (boot) fuse should be #10 (10A) located in the trunk fuse box next to the battery. You may need to use your key in the mechanical trunk lock (insert in Jaguar chrome on right side). Good luck.

Google will show you pictures of what to look for but I would suggest trying terraclean. They offer a specific clean for the egr without removing it and can check the system operates correctly so it won't simply clog up again during to a fault in the system.

disconnect the battery ,both terminals then join them together and leave for half hour .reconnect battery and it will then start ,common fault with these cars get lots of this on long term airport parking

I think the 2006 X Type uses the Ford Duratec diesel engine. This is used in several different vehicles including the Ford Transit. The plugs are usually located on the intake side of the engine. This engine usually has them under the injector rail, tucked behind the intake manifold. You'll need to remove the intake manifold and the EGR unit to get to them. The leaver in the 4 litre is fully electronic, it's just a fancy switch. In the 3 litre it's somewhat mechanical. Ether way it sounds like an electrical problem with sensing the leaver position.
