I had the exact same problem and here's what I did to fix it. The plastic part that contains the pick roller was dislocated at one side, bending it upwards in the middle. Not very noticeable. But when I slightly pressed down on it it snapped into place. Dislocation probably caused by transport. The upwards bend prevented the empty sensor from working properly. It actually almost blocked the incoming paper and then obviously did not release once the paper was through. Once the plastic part was back in place it was completely flat. Problem solved.

Possibly you do not have codecs installed, they allow either windows media player or other players to decode the dvd then play it. If you want to save the hassle of searching for them, get Cyberlink DVD player....it is a DVD player that strictly plays DVD's without having to get a codec or decoder.
