You didn't say what brand or model, so here's a generic answer: Find the instructions to reset it to factory codes. Sometimes this is as easy as removing the battery and waiting an hour (or a day) and other times you have to enter special codes, or disconnect a jumper, or connect 2 points with a wire to erase the codes. Once you have the lock reset, put brand new batteries in and follow the instructions for programming a brand new lock. dead bolt locks normally have a second small tongue above the main one when it is in the out or locked position push that small bit back in then the lock will function normally
