Screeching is always caused by dry metal on metal. It need oil on anything that spins or slides. See if the brake actually has fibre pads like the disc brakes on your vehicle. The small, approximately 1/4" long spring goes on the very bottom on the grinding shaft, on the outside, just before you put the nut on. There is a small gap between the inside of the nut and outside of the shaft that the spring fits into (hard to see, but it's there). Add the spring, then the nut and screw it on carefully by hand (so that you don't strip the threads). You can then adjust the grind by turning the nut. The farther you tighten the nut the finer the grind will be.
