What is the dirty belt theory?

This is a theory/myth about the colors of belt order changing due to them simply becoming dirty. In the older days, everyone (including masters) wore white belts. No one washed their belts back then, so after many years the belts would fade from white to yellow, then brown, and eventually to black. If you had a black belt, people knew you were a master since it would indicate that you had been practicing for a very long time.
