Welcome to Fixya. If the iron wont turn on it can be caused by a faulty cable, a busted Fuse, transistor, capacitor, switch problem or the main board of system. If you have warranty then you can have it checked an repair for free or if you have knowledge with electronics then you can open the iron and check hte part that is bad

My husband uncurled one wrap on each side of the spring, giving enough wire to stick under the clamp. It's not a good solution, but it works for now.

Most steam irons can be cleaned deposits by emptying the water and replacing with white vinegar. Let it heat up and use the iron as normal - but on cloth rags instead of clothing.
