This can happen and will generally clear with time, if you are concerned do a water change. I find that this treatment is more hassle than its worth, if you have a suitable filter seachem denitrate is a good alternative, or he aquarium pure balls.

I do not recommend makingyour own chemicals. Messing withchemicals can be harmful to you and certainly to your fish. There are many other aquarium related DIYprojects I can recommend, but making your own treatment chemicals is not one ofthem.

It depends on the species, gender, and how often they eat. Male Emperor penguins for example go months without eating while they incubate their young on the hostile Antarctic plains. Suggest watching "March of the Penguins".

The "overflow" is actually the return from the filter. Try adding water to the tank until it is closer to the return level and the sound of splashing water will diminish.
