It sure could be the capacitor. The symptoms are right for a bad capacitor.

Since the garage door only opens with the door unattached I would first check your garage door torsions springs. The garage door opener actually does not lift the door. If the lamps test OK, there probably has been a circuit failure inside the opener.

As the switch gets used it starts to wear out. The clicking you are hearing is likely a faulty switch. Cheap and easy to DIY. Replace according to your series number.

If it was working fine and nothing was changed by you then the issue is the opener itself. There is a bad connection or other components in it that have failed,

You did not list the model number and that would have been better but, there may be a problem with the sending unit on the sensor, the receiver or the power to them from the opener motor unit. You can test for sender failure if they are UV by using your camera phone and look for a purple light coming from it, you can test for output using a voltmeter

I would pull handle on opener track and close door. The flashing red indicates the sensors are not aligned read the instructions that came with unit and they will tell you how to align them.. Now one of them may be bad, you can buy replacements at Home depot or Lowes. You can find more info at genie or google you model number and manual is available for free.
