You don't mention if the wood is painted or sealed but what works for me is to wet it the effluent with water from the garden hose, wait a few minutes for it to soften, then hose it off with a bit more pressure (either a thumb over hose end or an attachment). If it isn't as clean as you'd like, you can try wetting it again, waiting and using a brush to clean it while rinsing.

They do like to survive. put the cage out where it can be accessed to see if your bird recognizes the opportunity before your squirrels do...
