Hi Just a thought but how is your DVD connected to the TV? If the DVD player is connected to the TV and the headphones to the cable box, then the audio will be going direct to the TV and no chance for the headphones to pick it up. If however the DVD player is connected to the cable box and then to the TV, I think I would expect it to work and cannot think of a reason why not. If the cable you use to send the S/PDIF signal is a fiberoptic toslink cable, inspect the ends very closely. The clear plastic nubs that protect the laser output can look an awful lot like part of the connection itself. If you haven't done so, remove them and try again.
