Vizio 42 in. LCD TV Logo

Lightning strike, power was out for no longer than a second and came back on - only TV has been effected and will not respond by remote or tv button. Shows it is on. But only getting fast clicking noise and a red reading saying 5.l. It is a Vizio 42" HD set. It has a cable box which seems to be on.

I really just want to know if a lightning strike could cause this as everything else is working. And also if repair would be advisable.

Hi Johnson,

Only 50% chance that the symptoms was caused by a lightning strike because your cable box was powering on fine. Most of the cases when lightning strike near to your area, possible of multiple damaged to the electronic device not only to one particular appliances, most especially if they are plugged into the outlet. Also, fuse will blew because of excessive voltage.

I've suspected that the symptoms was only a co-incidence of lightning strike. If you can hear the clicking of the relay, this is only means that the standby power supply is working fine. However, this board has multiple output voltage feeding the other boards to function well. This kind of symptoms is a power supply related problem.

If you have necessary tools and test instrument and handy with electronics, you can troubleshoot this board to find the faulty parts like open fusible resistors, shorted transistors/IC's, leaky electrolytic capacitor, etc.
Another option is to replace the entire power supply board, this is more convenient if you are going to DIY because no soldering required. Try to find you board HERE. Type the model no. of your unit to the search engine, available parts/board will be display.

Hope I helped you.
Have a nice day!

Hello
The lightning strike will have trillions of volts, when it discharges to earth. Any electronic equipments, or even rock can be splitted out with it. Even the near presence of it will distroy electrical and elsctronic equipments. It will be ver hard to say, what fault have been happened with your set, without proper checking. Anyway, its power supply regulation section has been effected, as per your description. The serial 'click' sounds indicates that. Some times this may be the only effected part in your TV. If so, replacing the power regulator card will solve the problem. An other part other than power supply normally can be destroyed is 'tuner' block. It can be only confirmed after replaceintg the power board and all ssupply terminals has been set correct. All the components and power board can be bought from most of the electronic sparepart shops at your town. You have to give them the board number, shich will be printed on the board itself. It is best to buy them from authorised service center for Vizio, because, you can make sure that the replacement parts are genuine. Check these. Wish you Good Luck. If you want anymore assistance from me; please be free to get me by FixYa. Ok.

Unlike other devices, the TV and cble box is connected to externally and will more venurable to effect with slectic voltages from the lightning stroke. If this tV war working fine and then stopped with some other reasons, such as line voltage variations or so, we can give you the exact point of fault that may happen to it. What will happen to astrongly built bulding with a strong lightning stroke. Can you imagine? That is why, I adviced you to check it with power supply at the begining. Trillions and Trillions of potential difference may cause the Tv already finished. In your tVs case, there is one power light is there, and that is the only hope. In this case no mechanic or techinican can say the exact point of fault, without checking the whole system. If you trust so, try if anybody is there to point out this fault please.

I have a Samsung PN64D8000FFXZA Plasma TV. We had a lightning strike and it no longer works. The red light flashes, the screen will flicker for a second, and then it goes out. It repeats this cycle. Is...

My experience with a lightning struck tv suggests even if you get it working it is unlikely to be the tv you remember ever again.
Even a mild lightning strike has a great deal of power and will track across every part of the tv circuitry in an effort to find a pathway to ground.

Unlikely to be the power supply alone though the components are a little more robust than many in a tv, however it is difficult to know without the sort of tests a tv guy can provide as many modern power supplies are intelligent switch-mode types that monitor the current drawn by circuits and will shut down if it exceeds limits and sometimes won't work at all when disconnected. This is a necessary precaution against fire.

The flashing red light might be expressing a fault code - or might not.

It is a premium tv and if your home insurance wouldn't cover the cost of replacement it would be worth the cost of a repair estimate from a professional.

TV out after lightning strike. TV led light comes on for 5-10 seconds then shuts off. Phillips 46pfl3505d/f7. Can this be fixed?

Sure it can be fixed. Most likely a problem with the power supply being zapped by the lightning.

Check to see what the price of a new PS is and is cost effective given the age of the set.

Stopped working after a storm

Did you have a power surge after a loss of power? If so your TV is ruined from the surge. In the future use a surge protector if don't already.

I have a LED TV that was hit with a power surge caused by lightning.

Could be your household insurance would cover the damage.

Unless the lightning strike was very local to you, on your side of the local substation, the responsibility for the cost of repair or replacement could be the power company's.

Surges from lightning strikes aren't supposed to get past the electrical substation.

Old-fashioned valve tvs and radios sometimes survived huge surges on the powerline and even minor lightning strikes to the antenna but solid state semi-conductors and micro chips aren't very tolerant to overloads of any sort. These days a tv is not longer a tv in the conventional sense but like cars and radios should be considered as just another computer that is full of CMOS chips which are extremely sensitive to overloads and static discharges. Even the screen of your tv is made up of semi-conductors.

I would be very surprised if the set isn't a write-off.

Surge from lightning strike damaged tv and won't turn on.

Unless you are skilled at trouble shooting power supplies , you will be better off getting a skilled repair center to repair yourset. If its repairable I have seen surges from lightning strikes make the set no longer cost effective to repair.
