My 5 yr old Sansung LNS4051D 40" LCD television suddenly went blank, no sound and smelled like it was burning. Pulled back off and found several capaciters on power circuit board that had partially melted along with center portion of board burned around several transitors. Need to replace the entire circuit board. Any suggestions as to a source.

Sounds as if the back light is going out or it maybe not plugged in all the way. Check on line to see how your back light is inserted and then you maybe able to check to see if it is plugged in all the way.

Maybe the backlight is out, can you see a picture when shining a flashlight on the screen. if yes you have either a bad inverter power supply or bad screen (panel).

Check the internal fuse. Unplug it, unscrew and take off the cover, the fuse should be easily found in the back by the power cord. I tlooks like a regular fuse but is white instead of clear glass because microwave fuses are special. You'll have to measure it with a meter as a result and be sure to replace it with the same kind. (try finding them at radio shack) Hopefully there isn't something more serious also.

heard a pop sound -- then the set went dead -- no lights, no nothing, and then there was a slight electrical burn smell coming from the back of the set :(

Sounds like a cracked LCD. That happened to my S400, and it was pretty evident the glass screen had broken. I bought a new one and installed it myself at a cost of under $40. Having a shop do the repair will cost quite a bit more. If you think this is the problem, do a Google search on "canon s400 lcd screen repair" and you'll find some resources to walk you through the ordering and replacement process.
