Water hammering after disconnecting a washing machine. I have just replaced our old washing machine that took a hot and a cold feed, with a new washing machine that only takes a cold feed. I have turned the shut off lever to prevent the hot water flow and I have also capped it off with a 3/4" brass blanking cap, just to be on the safe side. However, since stopping this hot water flow, I am getting water hammering whenever I turn on the hot water tap in the kitchen (this is the pipe that the mashing machine tap was tee'd off of). This is the only tap that is causing the water hammer, all other taps are fine. If I reconnect the old hot water hose and feed the hose into the sink and re-open the shut off valve, the banging goes away. Is this going to require a plumber to sort it out, or is it a simple fix?

You can use a water hammer arrestor and hook it up to old washing machine hot valve by use of a standard washer hose. This type of aresstor is basically. a shock absorber. You will needtonget pipe adapters to go from hose thread to pipe thread. If you can mount the hammer arressror higher then the washer valve. Hook everything up and turn old hot water valve back on. This shoulg take care of your problem. Thank you.

Strap the pipe to the wall. you probably pulled out the pipe support when capping the line.

There is nothing to indicate that the machine heats the water. We thought by connecting the y piece and just using cold, it would only be cold water. .

Most new washing machines only require a cold water feed! You should only connect the cold water feed and leave the hot water feed disconnected and turned off at the valve.

Can i connect to a cold water feed, i do not have a hot feed

I am assuming you can select water temperature on your machine. Simply hook up your pipe to the cold water feed on the machine, and leave the hot water feed alone. Always select cold water on the machine before beginning a load. If it makes you feel better, cap off the hot water inlet on the washing machine.

In a previous house, we had both a hot water feed and a cold water feed. My new house only has cold water feed, can i still use this washing machine?

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France,

In a word- YES!

You will need to purchase, from a hardware (?) store, a 'Y' adapter. Upside down the single end screws into the cold water supply and the hot and cold washer pipes screw into the double end. The washer is fooled into thinking it has hot and cold! When it expects hot, it opens its hot valve but instead gets the cold water and has to heat it up. It will therefore take longer for the machine to do the washing. When it wants cold for rinses, it opens its cold valve and gets the same water! Simple ;-0)
Good luck,
John C

The flow of the cold water seems to be restricted. The hot water pores into the tub. The cold trickles in. After disconnecting the cold hose, hot water back feeds out of the cold input side of the machine....

No cold rinse, only hot

Either the wires have come loose on the water valve or you have a defective water valve.Open the lid and look at the water valve. Are all wires connected?
If yes, replace the water valve.

My washer wont run in the hot water cycle

Sounds to me like your water valves in the back are going bad, just had it happen on mine the other day, I bought one online for like 15.00 that was new solinoid valves for both hot and cold water. took about an hour to install with no instructions (take the old one out, new one hooks up the same way) or call the washer repair people.
