I have a Hussman display case and the compressor was locked up so we replace the condesing unit.It ran great for a week but now the compressor is hissing and is running hot. Im thinking restriction or bad valves what do you think?

  • Anonymous May 09, 2011

I did change the filter drier and purged lines with nitrogen to make sure there wasn't a restriction. My pressure are 100 head and 50 on suction R-22 system. One thing i noticed was i wasnt getting any activity in my sight glass but the system was running fine. Now the hissing is constant and it doesnt come and go. I'm a journeyman hvac tech but I work on residential and light commercial HVAC. I havent done much refrigeration work in a while. I think the TXV is the issue but im not sure if the compressor is ok now?

  • Anonymous May 10, 2011

The box temp was 60 degrees. no i didnt clean a screen on txv and the refrigerator is air cooled and is an open display case that runs 35 to 40 degrees. Im not getting any activity out of my sight glass. Havent checked superheat because nothing is happening at txv.

First of all, there was a reason why the old compressor locked up and without finding out the reason why the problem is following the new one. The hissing that you are talking about is it coming from the compressor? If it is it sound like it is the internal pressure relief going off, this noise should come and go. Yes you do have a problem, and it could be a number of reasons but you need to find out the right one or you will spend more money than it would have cost a service man to repair, at least if he did it you could go back to him.
1. Was compressor burnt at time of lockup?
2. did you change the drier?
3. is it correctly charged?
4. Is TXV feeding properly?
let me know and maybe i can help.

Have you checked the superheat on the txv? when you told me the pressures on the gauges you didnt mention the box temp at those pressures. when you had the system open did you remove the screen from the txv and clean it. is it water cooled or air cooled? let me know.

  • Anonymous May 10, 2011

also you need to tell me is this high temp, med temp, low temp or xtra low temp?

do you know how to check valves in compressor?

  • Anonymous May 10, 2011

yea front seat liquid line king valve right? Everytime i start the compressor up it goes into internal pressure relief.

  • Anonymous May 10, 2011

WRONG!!! put guages on unit, jump out low pressure control so unit will stay running, front seat suction valve and let unit run, suction side should go into vacumn, (this may take a while but has to go into vacumn) once it is in vacumn, front seat discharge valve on compressor. as soon as you front seat the discharge valve cup power to unit, and watch gauges. If compressor does not pump down by first step, suction valves are bad. if pressures equilize after 2nd step discharge valves are bad. are you by equipment now? let me know.

  • Anonymous May 10, 2011

Ok thanks im going to try that at 2 oclock. I appreciate all your time. I will let you know what I find.

  • Anonymous May 11, 2011

    what did you find?

  • Anonymous May 11, 2011

Found bad suction valves. Front seated suction valvew would not pull into a vacuum. Here's my next plan of attack replace compressor, filter drier and TXV thats probably what I should have done from the start.

  • Anonymous May 11, 2011

If it is a semi hermitic compressor, change the valve plate. If you change compressor make sure you change all start components. Make sure you pull a good vacumn on system. Then check txv, since you have service valves you can move the refrigerant around to change the txv if you need to but make sure you clean screen on inlet side of txv. How about a testemonal would be great. let me know what you do.

Im trying to re- design an open air produce case at my fathers grocery store. The old design had a burnout on old compressor, because lack of oil , oil had accumalated 15 foot from evaporator [ vertical ft ] suction line was sagging. old design went another 180 ft out to mechanical room where the condensor, compressor ,and controls were located . ambient temperatures in the summer exceeds 110 degrees in room . and the old copper lines are ran overhead because original market layout ran underground in concrete when R-12 was used. the reason why im asking for your advice is simple.with the economy being in the state its in financial resources for repairs are tight. to repair it with old design would be very costly . i have a goodman condensing unit from a heat pump system that will fit on top of case eliminating 195 feet of copper suction and discharge lines [ same concept as our ice box] is this design even feasable .To improvise this old equipment at as little of a cost as possible is my goal. If you can help would be much appreciated.

I have a Hussman 6x9 walkin freezer and it will not work when temp outside gets above 80 degrees i need to find out if it has the right or a big enough unit for that size freezer. the only numbers i can...

Assuming the compressor is sized correctly( and usually they are) There are a couple of fairly easy things to check.
1.) The compressor unit.
Are the fan(or fans ) operating. Some units have two condenser fans and will operate with only one until the temperature gets too high for it to keep up.
Is the coil clean. A dirty coil can cause unit to fail too keep up in high temperatures.
2.) The evaporator unit .
Same as condenser unit . Are the fans all working
Are the coils clean.
3.) Defrost Timer. Is the time set correctly .
Is the unit defrosting during low usage time periods.

Hope this helps

Reaons for hussman freezer compressors failuer Model No:NLD 2

Normally compressors fail due to overheating. But just like any machine that may run 24 housr a day 7 days a week, the compressor may just wear out. Overheating is caused primarily by stopped up condenser coils. The condenser coil is the radiator like object that sits close to the compressor and dissapates heat created by the compressor. Also if the fan behind the condenser coil fails because of an obstruction or fan motor burnout the heat will not be dissapated properly. The compressor has protection built in that should shut it off during an overheating situation, but it can't protect it over a period of time where the compressor keeps trying to start and shuts down due to overheating. If you look at the condenser coil in many cases you will find dust and or grease build up so dense that no air flows through the coil. This is simply neglect or not knowing that the coil needs to be cleaned periodically. Also, if you have a refrigerant (freon) leak, your compressor will overheat. The cold returning freon helps to keep the internal components of the compressor cool as well as keeping the oil inside the compressor churning up onto the internal components. If you have a leak, it is not sufficient to just add freon every once in a while. Leaks need to be fixed by finding the leak and welding the leak shut. No refrigeration system should require "gassing up" other than the initial charge of refrigerant. Overheating can also be caused by a lack of air flow through the condenser coils because there is no space around the machine for air to flow into and out of the compressor compartment. If you have recently replace a compressor and it goes bad again, it may be burnout residue from the previous compressor that clogs the lines after a burnout. I hope this answers your question.

The outside unit started ratteling. It cools and then just runs like a fan. We replaced the capacitor. The pressure is good on both valves.

It sound like your compressor is going out. If the ratteling is a hard shaking rattle followed by the compressor kicking off the compressor is overheating and an internal fuse is kicking it off it will reset but if this is the problem and you have replaced the compressor capacitor and not the small capacitor for the fan.(unless yours is the 3 wire it works both) Check your voltage and make sure you have at least 208v should be closer to 220v then your compressor is bad. sorry

I replaced compressor for a hussman refrig and its hums loud

God day,
Some thoughts.
1. Are the evap fan motors running, and at full speed. That would give you abnormally low suction pressure.
2. Cap tube sized too small. or partial restriction in the dryer cap tube/dryer when brazing in the lines.
3. Low ambient. What's the temp the machine is running in.
4. Over sized compressor.
5. Moisture. God, 134A is touchy on that one.
6. Was original cap tube soldered to the suction line to create a heat exchanger. Needed on many apps. Definately would cause flash back on start up.
7. Superheat a little low, should be 12 to 15 degrees.

Compressor kicks out and it's new

First of all, clean your outside coils so that you are assured of good cooling air. The compressors have an overtemp device that is usually internal to protect them against heat. If you have an air compressor use it to blow out the coils good. If the compressor will start, the capacitor is good so it sounds like a cooling problem with the compressor
