A call with the Miele tech helpdesk got me an answer: The tacho unit (coil) should have about 500 Ohm resistance, so they told me. My unit only had about 78 Ohm's, so I ordered a new brush unit (which includes the tacho). The new unit actually measures 250 Ohm, but since it was a new one I did fit it. It works like a charm again. No F53 fault code anymore.
The part no. is 6799642 - Module BSTV Mrt40 RK473. It cost me about 70 euro's including shipping. My machine is a type W3821, but the motor and brush unit with tacho is used on a variaty of models.
Cheers!

We have had fault F53 (and occasional shaking by the machine) over some years on our Miele W1714 washing machine and despite repairs, including a replacement main circuit board and shock absorber, the problem persisted. After yet another F53 error stopping the machine I happened to run the machine on a wash (Automatic setting) with no spin. Then I ran Spin separately. The machine has worked perfectly ever since. This may be a complete fluke but I describe it in case it works for someone else.

F53 is a motor fault, Most likely the Tacho open circuit. Tacho comes part of the brush module assembly. You will need full model and index number before ordering part.

Hey thanks heaps for your input i had the same problem and it was the tacho that failed. although i had to purchase the complete motor for approx $430 when it arrived i just replaced the whole white brush assembly and i now have a spare motor and my machine is working well. if you are pulling the machine apart yourself the tacho is a copper coil about the same size as a 20cent piece that sits on the back of the motor.

My Miele W3821 comes up with the same F53 fault code. I've taken the motor out of the washer. No apparent signs of something wrong though. Now, I see (browsing the web) that one can test the suspected components using a multimeter (tacho, motor, pcb). Can anyone help me out? Thanks!

How do I fix a F53 fault on a Miele W3740 Washing Machine

First, unplug the washer for minutes then plug in and see if it solve the problem, if not then check the carbon brushes on the motor. These are a part which is expected to wear and when they do the motor cannot rotate the drum, which means the speed sensor thinks something is wrong and throws the error.good luck. How do I fix F53

This is a speed sensor fault. Could be caused either by the motor itself (built-in speed sensor) or by an electronic fault.

Hi my Miele W1712 washing machine is showing a F63 fault

The F63 is an error when something is blocking in the water path. I would suggest to open the front access drain flap and check for any objects like pins, coins etc. remove them and this should clear the error.
