TV is 1.5 years old. It's a Philips 42PF9631D/37 42" flat screen plasma. It won't turn on - just the red flashing light, seven times in a row, then it stops and cycles again, seven times in a row. Help, please!
Here is a photo of the board where I have removed the two from my TV. You can see the two open holes.
I had the same issue with 2 of these sets. It ended up being 2 capacitors were bad on the power supply. They are located towards the bottom of the board, you can visually see they were buldging and leaking slightly. I replaced them with 2 I salvaged out of an old computer (of same values) and the tv works as it did before.
We had this problem once before, tv lasted about a year before it started the 7x red blinking light , had it fixed, 500 some odd dollars to repair, now it started happening agian, same problem, just 7 months after original fail, so now we are going to go MoldyMac's way and look for the caps and see if a old computer can help supply the needed caps. There is a temporary fix to this problem if you need the TV now and not later, although it is temporary , because the problem just gets worse as the "capacitors" get worse. I imagine this may be tough for those who have the TV up on the wall. Stand to the right of the TV and you will see the power cord under it, which looks like a standard PC power cable , put your hand on this cord and get ready to pull it out, use the other hand to press the power button which is conveniently placed right where you are standing, the green light will come on and you will hear two clicks from inside the TV, wait a moment and you will hear another set of clicks that sound like the TV is shuting down, this is when you pull the power plug out of the tv by pulling and wiggling it out, wait for the Green light to go out, then plug it back in, it will attempt to start agian without you needing to do anything else to it, where you will here the initial two clicks, and then the TV should come on, if it didnt then repeat the process agian and agian till the tv starts. Thats my temporary solution, but remember the tv may start on the first try but will get harder to start each day.
Took moldymac's advice. Seven blinks/no pic. Checked capacitors, both bulged at top. Pulled connectors out of board (careful!!), pulled the main board out (do not drop screws!!) took it to local tv repair guy, he soldered two new, higher rated capacitors. Put board back in, plugged everything back up, bingo- back up and running. Heck with Phillips service centers ($500 is b.s.). $58.00 total repair bill plus my time. Something else may be a problem next week, but this sure fixed this problem today. Simple and cheap. Playing today with no problems.

The solution involving changing out the capacitors is spot-on. I had the same problem on Sunday, ordered the parts from digikey.com and had it in-hand by Wednesday. Now, with very minor soldering I am back in business. All told, it only cost $7.45 with shipping!!!

Did anyone who had this problem have problems with the screen before this happened? Our tv started losing the top half of the screen the other day, it goes white with different hues and the other half is fine. Turn the tv off and when you turn it back on it's ok for a while. Had it happen about 5 times in a hour or two and then not again for a day. This started about three days before tv wouldn't work at all and blinking light started. Just wondering if I fix this is my tv still going to need some other repair.
Well I just got home today and my TV wouldn't respond to anything. I think I have a different model than the one Muy has, but I'm not sure what model =/. however, it is mounted on the wall so it's too heavy for me to lift, but the red light blinks 5 times, and I'm not sure what that means. gonna have to live without the Xbox for a while *cry*
I had the same problem with the half screen and then last week the screen went blank with the seven red blinking lights. Any solutions, I've replaced the two capacitors and still hasn't solved the problem?>
The vertical screen distortion is usually attributed to the Y buffer boards. There is a lower and an upper which control the vertical lines on picture. Typically when they begin to fail, you will see vertical lines and distortion in about 4 inch thich block patterns all the way across the screen. When both y boards go bad, you will see distorted vertical lines over the whole screen encased in 6 faint 4 inch blocks along with the lines. The blocks are lined up with the ribbon cable connections on the Y boards. There are 6 total and this is why the distortion appears in 6 faint blocks or less.
Look at the part numbers on the boards and replace with exact matches. Be careful about buying other bad boards from ebay though. Try shopjimmy or discount-merchant as they back up there products.

Can somebody offer a little more guidance about locating the capacitors? I've pulled the back panel of the TV, but I'm totally lost. Somebody said they're near the bottom -- bottom right, bottom left, bottom center? I didn't see anyting bulging or leaking, either. Thank you!
I have found that by using small space heater behind the TV for a short time before turning it on I am able to bypass the problem. Of course this isn't going to work if you don't have any space behind the TV. Might work if in general proximity but not sure. Good Luck. I'm not anxious to spend $500+ on a TV that's ~ 2 yrs old and costt $2000 to begin with. Seems to me there should be a recall.

I've done the capacitor fix and everything went great for about 6 months. Then, the same failure happened again.
I replaced the capacitors again (this time with a "better" part) and the fix only lasted 2 weeks before failing.
I'm ready to cut my losses with this TV and move on. It's a lot of money, but I can't have a TV that doesn't reliably turn on when I push the power button. Philips, I don't think that's too much to ask.

Our tv was doing the same thing. Would not turn on and red light would blink 7 times. We opened up the back and low and behold there were the bulging capacitors. We took the mother board to our local tv repair shop and $70 later it is all fixed. Until the next thing goes wrong. Yahoo!! I would like to just put out there that there will NEVER be another Philips product in this house again! Thanks to everyone!
Awesome, I saw the bulging capacitors and came here after a google search. I knew they looked fishy, Geek Squad which came here on a warranty issue (unrelated) several days ago told me a repair would be about 500 bucks. Thats just off the top of his head w/o looking at it.
Future note, get the warranty at Best Buy its worth it, service is awesome.
Now I am going to get the 2 replacement capacitors and solder them in, I would rather have a tech do it but I didnt buy service on this one.

The problem is the Plasma Panel $1000.00 repair and Phillip knows about it .You can repair and replace everything on this tv . you will still have a problem somewhere else until you replace the Plasma Panel. There can be the same amounts of blinking ,but not everyone one has the same issue (figure that out ) A phillips repair center told me what the problem really is thank God for the honest people i suggest contacting phillip first get a complaint number from them and then contact consumer protection . like i'm doing . if it is going to get considered for recall this has to be done by all of us first .
I had the same problem with the blinking red power light on my 42" Phillips. Went to this forum and read moldymac's solution and also saw a video on UTube of a guy fixing a similar problem the same way. I decided to chance it and ordered the 2 capacitors online. My buddy, who is more adept at soldering, helped me remove the old parts and solder in the 2 new capacitors. Plugged it in and it is working like new. Cost me $6 for the parts, some time and a steak dinner. well worth it!!!
What kind of capacitors are we talking about, so I can get them before tearing my ste up?
Check the primary caps. I had secondary cap failures like what you are describing but eventually my primary caps went as well. They get hot and are rated for a limited number of hours before they fail too. Its all about heat making the set components wear out faster once the warranty time is exceeded (this is a science not conspiracy theory). Caps are usually poor quality to begin with and need better and more expensive components to get longer life.

I have the model Philips 37PF7320A/37 won't turn on and MOST articles on the Internet say it's the Capacitors capictors capictors..I checked all of them. My tv just blinked red lights, had the clicking sound at first power on, but then goes black. No sound. No picture. Nothing. Just blinking red lights.
MINE WAS RESISTOR no. 3318 , a 100 OHM RESISTOR ON POWER SUPPLY BOARD.
I BOUGHT REPLACEMENT FOR .99 CENTS SOLDER IT, AND EVERYTHING WORKED!!!

JUST A SUGGESTION..
1. CHECK FOR BULGING CAPACITORS (90 PERCENT OF THE PROBLEM)
2. THEN CHECK FOR RESISTORS WITH MULTIMETER ( FALLS INTO THE OTHER 10 PERCENT OF THE PROBLEM.)

Thank God for people who share this kind of info. I just today replaced the two bulging capacitors as noted, and the TV is working again. Total cost, $2.72 for the two capacitors and about one hour of my labor. The estimated repair from a shop was $300 to $600. This was for a Phillips 50 inch plasma, only 4 years old. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER PHILLIPS, however I will keep this one going for as long as possible (considering the price Ipaid). Can't thank you enough moldymac!
I replaced the 2 capacitors, turned it back on there's sound and no picture, in 15 seconds red blinking lights flash 7x again and again after another.
Thanks to all. This worked great. Opened it up and the two capacitors were bulging. Replaced them myself and now we are back in business.

Same tv. same problem. same two capacitors. Took the board to a computer shop had them order the capacitors and replace them for forty dollars. Problem fixed. Just cracked a beer and am watching the tv to celebrate.
This fix it worked for me. I had the exact same problem. The explanation and the instructions above were a huge help. I took the circuit board out and called around to different repair shops. I am in New Jersey and the best price I found was $95 for parts and service. I put the board back in and the TV worked. I greatly appreciate the guidance. Thanks

Always test your outlet first. HDTVs are sensitive at the ground prong. Also, purchase an upscale surge protector. FIXED MINE!

I just cant justify spending 1500 for a tv and within 2-3 years having to shell out another 300-500 to fix it. What ever happened to quality made? Thank you again Tailsfurse....

No power, only a red blinking light (7x). First time, i reset it (unplugged for a min. and then replugged it in) and it worked. A week later the same problem occurred and it didn't respond to the reset. I call phillips and they referred me to a customer repair facility.

I also have the same problem. Called Philips and the tech guy had me unplug the TV for about 30 seconds or so. Then I had to plug it back in and press the volume up button on the side of the TV as fast as I could. First time, the TV came on right away. Now it has turned into everytime I turn the TV off and back on after a length of time, I have to do the same thing. I have to do this 6 or 7 times now before the TV comes on. Just called Philips again and they told me to take it in...not sure I can afford another 500.00 to get it fixed!

Blinks red seven times then recycles. Has anyone contacted consumerprotection. I'm contacting them tomorrow with complaint i suggesteveryone else do the same if you want phillips to repair this. It mustbe a common issue and they are aware of it . All products must betested before public release.
I have the same issue. TV will work for about an hour then shutdown and then show the 7 blinking lights. If I unplug the power cord for a minute then the TV will stay on for another 5 mins. If I leave it unplugged overnight it will last for an hour again. There was a solution on here about replacing capacitors, but do I need a service manual and if so where can I get one?

I had the same problem as everyone on this board. my tv is about two years old and I had the same problem with the red light blinking seven times. I saw moldymacs comments and followed his advise. I opened my tv and noticed the two capacitors that looked bulged out on the top. they are side by side towards the bottom and are labeled 10v 3300uf. I went to my local electronics store and bought two for 1.20 then I took my board to my local tv/computer repair and he charged me 10.00 to remove the old and install the new capacitors. went home and reinstalled my board very carefully and problem solved. total cost was 11.20 and tv has been working fine....thank you moldymac you saved me a lot of money.Â

I would like to thank everybody who posted addressing this problem,I had to relace 6 capacitors (2 -3300uF 10V Radial Electrolytic Capacitors) and (4- 680uF 50V Radial Electrolytic Capacitors) TV works fine now.
