I have an Olympus E-510 which is just two years old. The camera went completely dead on me with no notice. I brought it to a camera repair store to see if they could find out what the problem was. We tested the battery and it was fine. I then brought it to a camera repair specialist who told me that it was the circuit board. He wouldn't repair it because he said it wouldn't be worth it. Is it worthwhile sending in to Olympus to get a quote only to have them say the same thing or should I just buy a new camera from another camera company and write this one off?

Olympus will charge you for the quote since they have to disassemble the camera to determine the problem. After paying them $100-150 for the estimate, do you still want to come up with the rest for the repair?

Hi there,

Your camera had a CCD (image sensor) problem. And this is something recognized by all digital camera manufacturers.

Olympus is distinguishing themselves by offering to repair affected cameras, even if they aren't displaying the problem yet. Their free repair policy is extended for up to four years from the original purchase date.

I have the same problem and I strong suspect the circuit board is going bad. No matter what lens I use, distance from subject, etc. makes any difference. Unfortunately, the fix is about $200.00 - and having to invest $200.00 per year to keep it going is not a viable option for anyone.

I am noticing a spot on photographs taken by olympus E-510

I'm guessing dust on the sensor. Google SLR sensor cleaning and you'll get full instructions on how to proceed. It's not difficult but you'll need to buy a few supplies.

Dead pixel removal or repair - Olympus SP-310

There is a function in your camera menu called Pixel Mapping which may correct the issue of dead pixels. If you go to Ok button - right arrow to Mode Menu - press Ok - go to Setup tab - right arrow over and then down arrow to Pixel Mapping - right arrow to Start and this will attempt to correct the CCD and remap the pixels in the camera. If this does not work then you would want to send the camera to Olympus for service.

Olympus will charge a flat rate repair fee for this product if beyond the one year factory warranty or the warranty is voided. The cost is $89 plus your local sales tax. This covers parts and labor, factory cleaning and diagnostic check, 6 month warranty and the cost of shipping the product back to you is all included in that price.
