White spots on my 46" Samsun DLP! One to two spots appear on the screen...sometimes come and go, but are in the same locations when they do. Afraid of problem getting worse.

  • whtbusa Jul 22, 2008

have the same problem on my 42'' dlp.

  • dbaxley Jul 29, 2008

I have just noticed the same thing on my 46" DLP. One spot appeared 2 weeks ago, today I have 2, so I went looking for answers and I found this site. Anyone have any ideas on what is causing this or how I can fix it?

  • boscosmom Aug 29, 2008

Ditto what everyone else says re: black and white spots. We have a 2 year old 64" Samsung. Of course without extended warranty.......

  • Anonymous Nov 12, 2008

I have the same problem with my Samsung 46" tv. First, they were just a few white spots and now 3-4 weeks later, there are too many to count. I have extended warranty. The service rep came out and said he had to order the part - the board. After waiting two weeks for his return, I called him and was told the part was on back order. Seems like perhaps there is a manufacturing problem with this tv.

  • Gbern Dec 07, 2008

Me too. 56 inch DLP. 18 months old. One spot 10 days ago, now four. New ones with increasing frequency. No extended warranty. Any ideas? Samsung offering to address what is clearly a manufacturers defect? HELP!!!

  • Anonymous Dec 11, 2008

I also have a Samsung ... same problem ... did anyone get theirs fixed?

I have no extended warranty either. ..... what does the repair cost?

  • Anonymous Dec 15, 2008

Same here. We have a 46 inch Samsung DLP. Our other TV's have lasted over 15 years, This one is less than 2 years old. The technical service dept is of no help. Too many white dots to count. Not a happy Samsung customer:(

  • Anonymous Dec 20, 2008

I too have the same problem. I called samsung and got a part number out of them. BP41-00289A I have searched for this part but cannot find it on line any were. My 46" dlp is only 18 months new but now is painful to watch with the white dots. I replaced it with a 50 plasma (panasonic) and bought an extended warranty. I will not buy another samsung product. If they happen to own up to their dmv defect and repair the mdm board I will lift my samsung boycott but till then I will steer anyone away from their products. I wias told the cost would be around $500 + labor to fix:(

  • Anonymous Dec 30, 2008

Same thing Samsung 50 dlp tv- had 1 spot and it is now one week and here are 14 of them. It is 18 months old also. No warranty left

  • tommy pechacek Jan 05, 2009

i have the same promblem with the white dots, no matter what i watch it is always snowing.Kind of cool at first, although i will never buy a nother samsung. it is sad that samsung will not own up there poorly made TVs and find a quick fix.

  • Anonymous Jan 11, 2009

ARRRRGH! I have the same problem. 56 DLP Samsung (720p) TV is only 2 years old! White and black dots all over and getting worse! I found a sight, though, that has parts for our TV's: www.samsungparts.com About $250 for DMD board. I may role the dice and order it and see if it fixes it. Too bad. I really like the TV, and can't beat the price, size and picture compared to LCD's or Plazma's. Oh well, ordered another one (1080p) but this time I bought the extended warranty.

Has anyone replaced the DMD board and fixed the problem?

  • Anonymous Jan 12, 2009

I have a 56" Samsung DLP and I just noticed I have a white spot in the middle of the screen TV is not even two years old yet. After reading all these posts I'm sick.

I have a Samsung rear projection TV that just developed 3 white spots. I will post another message in a month and let you know how many more spots develop The cost of the repair on my less than 3 year old TV is going to be over 1/3 of the price I paid when NEW! I think the I think the news media should be made aware of this FLAW in Samsung rear projection TV's. Any suggestions?

  • mneillamb Jan 27, 2009

  • Anonymous Feb 11, 2009

purchased samsung dlp in august april 2007. February 2009 I now have 3 white spots within a week, and have a feeling this will grow to more very soon. this sucks. I've told many people to buy samsung dlp, but I will never again.

  • Anonymous Feb 14, 2009

I also have the same problem with my hardly 2 year old samsung 50 inch DLP. I plan to go to the store and see what my options are....if they know this is such a problem, then there needs to be some type of recall. Maybe if everyone writes a letter? From what I've heard, it cost $300-500 to fix....thats not right!

  • neutz_73 Feb 16, 2009

I have the same problem with my Samsung DLP model: HL S5086W. White spots are growing in numbers...It looks like a pretty common problem with Samsung DLP TV's. I just bought this TV 2 years ago...it seem's like we got ripped by Samsung. They should Recall these TV's or Fix it for free since it's a Known Issue.

  • Anonymous Mar 09, 2009

My Samsung DLP television is 2 1/2 years old and just started with the white dots. Two appeared on the screen yesterday and two more today. From what I have read over the Internet it is a common problem with this brand and model of tv. Samsung also referred me to a service site and told me that to their knowledge there has not been a recall on the tv or the part. You might as well purchase a new tv and not a Samsung!

  • pearblossom8 Mar 18, 2009

Wow, this is disappointing to see so many people with the same problem. I have a 60-something inch Samsung DLP TV we got about 18 months ago. I noticed one white spot, then a second, and immediately a third. Gosh, $900 or so to fix it...I think we paid $1500 for the whole thing. I read all the reviews on CNET but they were all worthless I guess, none said anything about this. The TV is basically junk. What a shame. Wow, it's still so new!

  • jmarchesiani Mar 19, 2009

Folks, I am in the same boat. I have 3 white spots as of now. I have been trying to reserahc this and am finding all sort so details about DMD boards, and chips etc. I would like to repair myself but have yet found a solid answer as to what part I need and how to install. I have a HL-4266W.

  • Jamol DeCair Mar 25, 2009

I started having the white dots and it progressed to my tv shutting off and on all by itself, They wanted 650.00 to fix it but I said no I paid the 50.00 service fee and they told me it was the dmd board. They first thought it was the digital processor. Man the tv had a great picture to ! I feel really bad because I swore by samsung. Worked for Best Buy 13 years and made alot of money for there company by selling them also recomended them even off work. Oh well I will go to town on mine with a solder iron . I will post my findings.

  • sacarr2 Mar 26, 2009

Frustrating that Samsung will not do anything to fix this problem. Also I bought my tv from Circuit City and these dots showed up right after they went out of business. Go figure.

  • bluegem024 Mar 30, 2009

Numerous white spots on Smasung DLP TV model hls4674s. I now have about 12 full time spots and a couple more blinking. This tv is just over two years old. This is a design fault and samsung should issue a recall. Thanks, [email protected]

  • eknadler73 Apr 06, 2009

Same issue here. White spots showing up and either staying or flickering. My TV is about 3.5 years old. If anyone has a link to someone that provides the part, that would be great, but it sounds like it might be a challenge.

  • Anonymous Apr 06, 2009

Same problem with our Samsung DLP. Less than 3 years old.

  • Anonymous Apr 06, 2009

Same problem on my 50 inch DLP. Started at about two years.

  • Anonymous Apr 14, 2009

I have the LE40..whatever model, it's just over 2 years old. Some white dots appeared one day about 2 months ago, now I have about 100 at times. If I leave the input cables disconnected and let the 'no input detected' banner show, it slowly moves down the screen pixel by pixel as expected, however amazingly the white dots move too in step with the banner! So I think this rules out any chance of the problem being related to dead pixels, and I believe that it is more to do with the driver circuitry or some sort of frame buffer. Someone mentioned static buildup, tonight I will try a damp cloth on the screen to try to ground any surface charge on the screen to see if that makes any difference. I will also try leaving the set disconnected from the mains for 24 hours.

  • Anonymous Apr 25, 2009

I have a Samsung S4676S and have the same problem. It was purchased 2 years ago. I have a 4 year warranty. I just replaced the lamp. Now I have the spots. I googled the white spot problem and cannot believe how many owners have the same problem. Shouldn't there be a recall? I'm going to call Samsung and see what the problem is. If I don't get results, I will call the better business bureau and keep on going until I get results. This should not happen after only 2 years. I don't even use the TV that often.

  • Anonymous Apr 29, 2009

I have the exact same problem and mine is 18 months old. For $1900, which included all the 'special cables' that Circuit City said I had to have, this has really been disappointing. This unit came with good reviews but after reading all the other posts, I am in agreement that Samsung needs to step up to the plate and do the right thing.

  • Anonymous May 11, 2009

I have the same problem as well, my DLP is just over 2 years old. You would think that if this is a re-occuring problem Samsung would do something to solve it to keep their customers. Anyone have any luck with Samsung repair their DLPs for free?

  • mmitchem May 14, 2009

almost 2 years 2 the date of purchase my 46" DLP Samsung developed the white spot syndrome. Luckily I have an extended warranty. When the Bestbuy tech came by today, we were told he would have to order a a a a new engine, and he isn't sure that they are still available. If not we get a new TV!

White spots EVERYWHERE....Un-watchable...Samsung gave me the same song and dance...NEVER AGAIN A SAMSUNG!!! I WILL TELL EVERYONE!!

  • Anonymous May 26, 2009

Seems like there is material here for a class action on product defect grounds. My tv is the same age and is having the same problem and Samsung is acting like they'd never heard of the problem.

  • Anonymous Feb 04, 2012

Just got off of phone with samsung and after being told it was out of warranty and I would have to pay for a nearby service center to fix it I quickly went on a "little rant" about product deficiency and about how many "thousands" of people there are with this same issue I would like to be put in contact with someone to file a formal complaint. I was put on hold for about 30seconds and then the same guy came back on the phone and told me they would offer a one time free replacement of the DMD chip and all subsequent charges and a technician would be in contact with me within 48hrs to set up a time to come by and fix it. However, if it's not the DMD chip I would be responsible for the labor charges of the technician. Looks like it only took 4 or 5 years of people pestering samsung for them to finally cave on the issue.

  • Anonymous Dec 06, 2012

December 5, 2012 Have a series 7 750 DLP set purchased in 2008. After reading hundreds of similar "white dot" issues with Samsung DLP sets, attempted to get problem fixed through Samsung Support. As hundreds of others have found, the answer is "your set isn't covered." I was able to obtain information them that the DMD chip in question, made by Texas Instruments, was brought up in litigation in 2006, and hence units made with that one were replaced. Samsung CONTINUED to use Texas Instruments DMD chip and they continue to that the exact same problem as the chips before. But since it is "technically" not the litigated part, they are not honoring any forms of repair for their customers. Amazingly bad business practice, and possible subject to civil claims if enough people complain. As I told them, their failure to correct their less than $100 mistake results in consumers like me buying from their competitors and convincing everyone I know to do similar. Sad how bad the consumer market is becoming...

All of these videos I watched on youtube showing how to replace a chip for the white and black dots on the screen are incorrect as they call it the DPL (digital lighting process) chip. What it is, is a DMD (digital micromirror device) chip. That is fact that came from Mitsubishi, Samsung and Toshiba. I just got off of the phone with all three today April 21, 2014. Get it right guys and girls !!!

You will actually get white and black dots , the black ones are tougher to see because of the color in the background , within 2 months youre picture will be fully covered with dots....I went through the Samsung website troubleshooting flow chart , and it led me to a bad Digital Micromiror Device , or DMD board . What is actually the problem is the DMV chip connected to this board . Inside this chip are 3 million tiny mirrors ,and when they physically get stuck , they either show black or white instead of a color . Samsung will not tell me the part number of the chip , they will only offer to send a service tech to my house .

I have the same problem with my 2 1/2 year old 46 inch Samsung DLP. I have gone as far as to contact a friend of mine at Texas Instruments to ask if she has seen the problem. She told me exactly the same thing as cdietze6458. The mirrors on the DLP chip are slowly sticking either fully open (white) or fully closed (black). The part that contains the DLP chip is the Light Engine. It is the most expensive part of the TV. Mine is 905 dollars. One thing I find very interesting is that if you search on this issue on the web you find mostly Samsung TVs with this issue. The other interesting thing is that the part number I need is backordered for 4 weeks. Also, they are giving a core discount/rebate if you return your old part. Are we feeling guilty Samsung?

I have the same problem and Samsung will not cover the repair of my 67-inch DLP TV. I even talked to the Customer Service Manager and was no help at all. I guess Samsung is gambling that only few peoppl will complain and post comment of its poor customer servivce on line. Samsung does not feel sorry ot guilty. This is about a $300 to $400 repair according to the contracted tech service company.

I found shopjimmy had the DLP chip and I was able to replace the chip (it took a bunch of hours and was nerve racking for a novice like me)...and it worked! my Samsung HL67A750 now has a picture that looks like new! I didn't need to replace the bulb. One issue is that the TV is a bit off center. I have to open it up again to straighten it, apparently.

See thread here for "field of stars" fix:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1107926
Worked a charm on my 50" Samsung DLP. Read thread carefully as there are 2 different version of the chip you need. I ended up fixing mine for less than $165!

Samsung just saved a customer. I just spoke with their support and they are coming out to replace my DLP chip at no charge. The TV is 5 years old. I'm going to continue to buy Samsung. It is rare to see companies stand behind their products to this extent.

All these posts were really helpful. I have the same problem, "white dots". I called Samsung - 1-800-726-7864. On a Sunday the answered! Got right in to a rep who was so helpful. She did ask for the model and serial number. Now, here is the big catch...if you have model HL-S5086W, they will fix this for free. However model HL-S5088W is not a free fix.
I had the 86 model, fortunately, They don\'t tell you which one is free fix until AFTER you tell them what you have! So they said a local TV repair will contact me in 2 working days to setup an appointment and replace the part. This is all free, no warranty, my TV is at least 4-years old, they didn\'t ask how long I had it or anything.
I was ready to pay for repair, or replacement when I stumbled onto this site. What a great solution to what I thought was going to be an expensive problem. Good luck i you have the same - good job Samsung.

hidden defects there must be a way why the other model has no warranty its very strange they must explain why Samsung when you buy it new must direct replace all capacitors for Japan or German types instead of the bulgy bulg top trash the people are strange who give service the one people get all things without costs and the other pays the big price thats no service.

Little white dots on DLP tv HLT5076sx/xaa that is only about 2 1/2 years old. Started with just 3, now up to 11 since 2 nights ago. Took meyestro's advice and called Samsung at 1-800-726-7864. They said that my TV was one of the one's affected by this problem, so they would give me a one-time courtesy repair, but if it happens that the chip is NOT the problem, then I will be responsible for the costs. Someone will call me back within 24 to 48 hours regarding the service repair.

  • Anonymous Jun 12, 2013

I just made the same call to Samsung today.....got the same response as Lisa Abrams....made me laugh when I saw that it was TODAY that Lisa called! What a coincidence! Hopefully it IS the chip. Good luck!

I have the same problem with my HL72A650C1FXZA. White dots all over my screen. I was told that it is not covered in warrant and I need to have a repair person come fix it. This is very upsetting. She is telling me that my model is not cover in the ones that get fixed for free because it is due to natural wear and tear. When I asked to speak to a supervisor she said there is not one but she can take down my name and number and have them call me back. We I asked why there is no supervisor there is said there was but they are on the phone with other people. I told her I would hold and then she hung up on me. Very very frustrating since I waited on hold almost 30 min to talk to someone now to be hung up on.

My HL61A750 started with the White Spots issue I added new Thermo paste behind the DMD chip and it stopped the spots from growing, but by then I had a hundred. So I replaced the chip and it's like new again.

I am in the same boat with white dots on my HL67A750 TV. You can get a service manual here http://www.tradebit.com/filedetail.php/133052760-samsung-hl61a750a1f-hl67a750a1f-dlp-tv-service-manual
For $12.99.
You can buy the chip at Amazon here. http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Mitsubishi-Toshiba-4719-001997-Chip/dp/B007JY58FM/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1363053477&sr=1-1-fkmr0&keywords=Dmd+chip+for+hl67a750Numerous white spots on Smasung DLP TV - ir?t=avsforum00-20&l=ur2&o=1. For $159.

I only have 4 dots now, but if it gets worse i will get the manual and the chip as I described above. Best of luck.

Here is an instruction video from ShopJimmy. It may save the price of the Service Manual. They sell the DLP Chip on Amazon that I mentioned in my previous post.

I called Samsung but was told my TV wasn't one of the covered models so I will have to pay for it. I think that is bogus because the problem is systemic with all of the DLPs. Local repair shop said at $350 parts and labor. I went to the ShopJimmy.com website and watched the repair video. The part there is $84 and it looks fairly easy so I'm gonna try it myself.

Same problem with HL T5087SX, which Samsung claims is NOT on the "Court Ordered" list for One Time warranty extensions to cover the repair. However, the Authorized Service Center they "assigned" me called me and told me that it was qualified. Nonetheless, Samsung REFUSED to cover it. Tabatha in their "highest customer service department" could not go against Samsung "POLICY". Since she was in the "highest department", she would not/could not refer me to anyone else. Looks like I may be stuck paying for repair myself - and looks like I may never buy from Samsung again."

I have a 67" DLP TV and last night 2 white spots

That usually indicates that the optical block is going bad. That repair is usually 900-1100 dollar fix.

White spots on samsung DLP tv

DLP/mirror chip is going bad. A common problem on Sammy TVs after 2-3 years. Chip is user replaceable (try samsungparts.com or ebay) for about $150-200. Sammy was (last year) repairing the DLP White Spot problem for free. You MUST talk to ECR (executive customer service) to even think about getting that consideration--forget the standard CS people. Don't know if they are still covering this out of warranty in 2010.

Numerous white spots on Smasung DLP TV

Mine is having the same problem. It started around Memorial Day and is only getting worse. One white dot is now a dozen. I called Samsung several times and was given the brush off. They clearly know this is a problem and are failing to respond to the problem in hopes that people will deal with it on their own. It does not matter if your warranty is expired. This is a latent product defect. They are still liable and obligated to fix the problem. I have filed a complaint with the better business bureau. If the company does not respond, I'm taking this to small claims court to get reimbursed for any cost to fix my tv.

Numerous white spots on Smasung DLP TV

If your Mitsubishi TV has white spots in the picture , you can call Mitsubishi @ 1-800-332-2119 and request a free DLP Chip to fix the problem. They will send the New DLP Chip at no charge to a TV Tech in your area to install it for $200 flat rate. That is about a $250 savings if you had to pay for the chip . Call them with your TV's Model number and serial number and let them know when and where you bought the TV.
It saved me some hard earned money and now my TV is like New !

Numerous white spots on Smasung DLP TV

same problem for me ... check out this thread on AVSforums about it.

I have the same exact tv as you and had the same problem. I took it to a repair shop who told me I needed a new DMD chip and that it would be 850 to fix. I used the information in thread above to get the part number and bought the chip on ebay for under 200. Here is a link to the listing CHIP

People have had good success. I will be replacing mine tomorrow.

See link below for "field of stars" fix:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1107926

Worked a charm on my 50" Samsung DLP. Read thread carefully as there are 2 different version of the DMD chip you will need to replace. I ended up fixing mine for less than $165!
