FIXED: PCL XL error when printing to a HP printer

I fixed this problem by installing the KB948046 Hotfix from Microsoft (thanks to Brent Follett from forums11.itrc.hp.com for pointing me in the right direction).

To download and install this hotfix, search for “hotfix KB948046” or go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948046 and click on “view and request hotfix downloads”.

You will be prompted for an email address, the URL for the hotfix together with a password will be emailed to that address.

Install the hotfix and reboot the system. The problem was fixed for me at this point.

I tried to print before rebooting, but that did not fix the problem, a reboot is essential.

More information:
I encountered this problem on a HP 2605 (laserjet) printer (HP2605) that was shared from a Windows Small Business Server 2003 with Service Pack 2 (SBS SP2).
When printing from networked machines the error was printed out on the printer. After installing the KB/948046 hotfix on the server only and rebooting the server, the problem was fixed.
I also installed other updates on the server before installing the hotfix using Microsoft Update.

I hope you found this useful and this fix works for you. Happy Hunting!

It is best to use the post script driver., My printer is HP MFC 3300, with PCL XL error. After I download the driver HP Universal Print Driver for Windows PostScript (64-bit), not the one PCL6. Now it is working fine.

Hello,

The best way to get rid of the error is to reinstall the drivers with PCL 5e.
Get the drivers from the following site:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?prodNameId=410627&taskId=135&lang=en&cc=US&prodSeriesId=410622&prodTypeId=18972&refresh=true

Author Subject: PCL XL error Subsystem: KERNEL Error: IllegalOperatorSequence favorites_add.gif Clinton Griffin
Aug 13, 2008 02:59:02 GMT I purchased a HP Color LaserJet CM1312nfi MFP and connected to my HPLaptop with Vista 64-bit operating system and received the followingerrors when trying to print from most applications:

PCL XL error
Subsystem: KERNEL
Error: IllegalOperatorSequence

After many hours of reinstalling the drivers, the firmware, on thephone with Microsoft and on the phone with HP to no avail, I discoveredthe work around myself.

I downloaded the HP Universal Print Driver Series for Windows Vista 64-Bit and this driver works! Here is the link:

This solved my problem and hopefully it helps you.

Clint,

Just so you know what you were dealing with, as it may resurface, seeboth of Chris H's replies in this thread. Since the error was the same,it was a driver fault, and replacing the driver, not necessarily thatspecific UPD driver, that fixed it.

I'm glad it's working for you.

Update:

I continued to look at the issue and now think the problem is not thedriver, but the application software. Using the 64-bit driver for theCM1312:

1. I can print color using Paint and text using Notepad.

2. I cannot print from Adobe 9, IE 7 and Office 2007 (downloaded 9/17/08) in color. If I do I get the
PCL XL error
Subsytem: KERNEL
Error: Illegal Operator Sequence
Operator: EndSession
Position: 15

3. I CAN print all the products in 2 if I switch to grayscale.

4. I can print screen captures from the products in 2 using Paint -which may be my workaround until HP and Microsoft get together on asolution.

So does anyone from HP monitor this and report the issue and resolve it?

So theThe problem for me is color printing in Microsoft products.
