MEASURE AND ADJUST VALVE CLEARANCE 1. Turn the flywheel clockwise until the intake valve opens and then closes. Continue turning flywheel until the TDC (top-dead-center) mark (A) on the flywheel is upward. Both valves (B) must be closed and the piston (C) must be at the top of its compression stroke. If the valves are open, the piston is on the exhaust stroke and the flywheel must be turned one revolution
2. Measure valve clearance using a feeler gauge. VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATION Item Specification Intake Valve (A) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0.13 mm (0.005 in.) Exhaust Valve (B) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0.33 mm (0.013 in.)
3. If necessary, hold tappet and turn tappet screw to adjust valve clearance

In this video I will show you how to clean the carb on a Briggs10hp. This is a Nikki carb.
There is no adjustment. The clearance is pre-set by the valve length and tappet length. If the valve seat is worn the clearance becomes non-existant. .020-0.30 clearance for both intake & exhaust will work okay.
hi, the largest valve clearance is always the exhaust valve due to the higher operating temperatures. So if the clearance is .004 and .006 thousands of an inch, the .004 relates to the intake valve.
3000 or 4000 is your clearance, get the piston up top dead center make sure piston is to the top of the cylinder rocker arms should be level with each other before you set them
It sounds like the compression release is not working,it works by opening the exhaust valve during engine cranking. For the compression release to work the valves have to be adjusted, especially after the engine is broken in.Set the engine to top dead center on the compression stroke, the exhaust valve should be set to .004 and the intake to .002. I think you will find the exhaust valve is way too wide which is causing the hard crank problem.Set the valves by adjusting the nuts on the rocker arms,it should be a torx set screw located in the rocker arm.First back the torx screw out about a turn then hand tighten the rocker stud with the feeler gage in place then tighten the torx screw down to lock the setting.
