How do you remove the agitator on a wash machine?

HERE ARE SOME SOLUTION BELOW
Machine Won't Agitate or Spin

Remove the pump and drive motor. You will find two plastic and one rubber motor couplings. One is located on the drive motor and the other is on the gear case with the rubber coupling between them.

2 Pry or break the old couplings off with your screwdriver. Replace with new couplings. Simply push one onto the shaft of the gear case and press the second one onto the shaft of the drive motor.

3 Line up the holes of the rubber isolation coupling with the studs in the coupling. Push the rubber isolation coupling in place.

4 Push the isolation and coupling on the drive motor making sure that the holes line up with the studs on the other coupling on the gear case.

5 Reinstall the drive motor and then snap the pump in place with the retainers to hold it in place. Reconnect the hoses with the clamps and snap the.Put the washer back on and screw the back in place. Position the washer where you had it before and plug the washer in

Washer Won't Drain If your Roper washing machine does not agitate, spin or drain, you have a problem that needs fixing. The average do-it-yourselfer can do this JOB without hiring the professional technician. Each problem indicates a separate repair, but while you have the washer apart, it never hurts to check things while the back is off and the parts are off the washer. EXERCISE caution and make sure that the washer is unplugged and the water is off before you begin.

Check the drain hose to see if anything is plugging it. Sometimes small pieces of material go out with the wash water and become lodged in the drain hose.

2 Open the access panel in the back by removing the screws and taking off the back panel. Remove the drain hose. this is usually held on with a clamp, collar or clip.

3 Use a pair of needle-nosed pliers to remove the obstruction. If the material is further into the hose, you can use a sturdy piece of wire with a small hook bent at the end. Stick this into the hose to try to pull the obstruction out. If you still can't reach the obstruction, disconnect the entire hose and force the obstruction out with a water hose using the jet spray.

Drive coupling replacment

Top load clothes washers built under the Kenmore and Whirlpool brands (among others) for the past 20 years use a direct drive transmission rather than a belt drive system. In place of the belt a coupling is used. This coupling can wear or break just as belts can wear and break. The following will aid in replacing the coupling.

-Run the machine in a drain/spin cycle to remove as much water as possible

-Unplug the power cord, if you wish to have more room to work it may be beneficial to remove the hoses from the machine as well (your call)

- Tip the machine up so you can work under the front, be sure to support it so it does not fall on you. You can also lay the machine down while working on it, just be sure lay it down slowly and gently.

There is a diagram at the bottom of these instructions, the numbers in parenthesis on these instructions refers to the part number on the diagram.

- In the front center bottom you will see a white colored pump (22) with 2 hoses on it. There are spring clips(21) that will release the pump, use a flat blade screwdriver to pry them off then pull the pump straight off the motor. You can leave the hoses on or if you want more room you can take them off, but you will need some towels to clean up the water if you take them off.

- Remove the 2 screws (23) from the clips holding the motor on. Unclip the wire harness (20) from the motor and pull off, it may be stiff.

- Remove the 2 spring clips (17) from the motor the same way you took them off the pump. Pull the motor off.

- You will see one plastic piece on the motor, the same plastic piece on the gear case and a rubber isolater between the two. The new coupling will come with all three pieces, be sure to replace all 3, The plastic pieces will pull off the motor and gear case, you may need to use a screwdriver to help pry it off. Push the new plastic parts onto the motor and gear case. You may need to gently tap on them to get on, the hole in the new part should go all the way onto the shaft so the end of the shaft is even with the coupling. Place the rubber isolator on the couple piece that is on the gear case. Now this next part can be a bit tricky. Turn the coupling on the gear case so one of the holes is at the top (12 o'clock), turn the coupling on the motor so one of the pins is on the top. Line up the motor and push it straight on until the motor is flush against the plate, it make take a couple of tries to get the coupling pin to go into the hole on the isolator. Once in place reinstall the spring clips (17) the screws (23) the wiring harness (20) the pump (22) and the clips (21).

- Stand machine back up and reconnect all hoses and cords.

- Enjoy a working washer again.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive washers use a "Motor Coupler" between the motor and transmission.

It's used as a fail safe device and consists of three parts.

Two of the parts are the same, plastic units with three prongs that fit on one of the motor output shafts and the other on the transmission input shaft. Between them is a rubber piece with six holes.

The power from the motor is transmitted through the rubber piece to the transmission.

The other shaft on the motor directly drives the pump. This is likely why the machine drains.

If the motor coupler is broken, or worn, the motor may not be able to send full power to the transmission for agitating or spinning.

Put the cabinet back on, don't forget to plug the lid switch back in and re-mount the console.

Kenmore 70 series washing machine that has a terrible smokey smell. Now my clothes have that horrible smell. What could the problem be and is it worth fixing.

It's a relatively inexpensive piece and is designed as a fail safe between the motor and transmission.

Your washer is a basic Whirlpool / Kenmore top load, direct drive, neutral drain machine.

Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive washers use a "Motor Coupler" between the motor and transmission.

It's used as a fail safe device and consists of three parts. Two of the parts are the same, plastic units with three prongs that fit on one of the motor output shafts and the other on the transmission input shaft. Between them is a rubber piece with six holes.

The power from the motor is transmitted through the rubber piece to the transmission.

If the washer fills but, and you can hear the motor trying to turn, the problem points to the Motor Coupling.

This is a relatively easy fix for the basic Kenmore / Whirlpool washers.

The drum is not spinning. I hear a noise like when you stick something in your bike spokes.

Assuming that this is a Kenmore / Whirlpool top loader with a direct drive system, the first thing to check is the motor coupling.

The transmission and motor have plastic parts that connect through a rubber coupling.

#13 on diagram Coupling, motor and isolation Number:661560Substitution:285753A $18.50 If the coupler rubber piece wears out, the pins on the motor and transmission sides will rub together making the sound.

If the coupler looks good the problem is likely in the transmission.

The rubber piece at bottom is likely the center piece of a motor coupling. See the section on the parts list for motor and pump.
The funny noise is likely the plastic pieces of the coupler rubbing against each other.

The coupling consists of three pieces. Two of them are plastic and have prongs that slip into holes in a center rubber piece. This is a fail safe device that protects the motor and transmission.

Remove the cabinet and pump, motor and motor mounting plate.

Pry off the plastic parts from the motor and transmission.

Slid the new plastic parts on the motor and transmission, slip the new rubber piece onto the prongs on the plastic piece on the transmission.

Replace the motor mounting plate.

Carefully line up the prongs on the plastic part attached to the motor to the three unused holes in the rubber piece and re mount the motor.

Put the pump back on and replace the cabinet.

Hello I believe you have pinpointed the problem accurately yourself.
1. It is an easy fix, if you said you got the top off then thats the hardest part. That will restore spin because it is the linkage between the motor and transmission which spins the inner tub.
2. The causes of the coupler busting are just wear and tear. Happens all the time. Main reason for it busting is because its plastic.
3. Thats probably all it is most of the time the transmission will just slip when it goes out and not lock up. Like I say this is common so it is not likely that it is anything other.

To fix it just pull cabinet off. Pop the pump off, then the motor. Then you can access the coupling. When you buy the coupling it will come in 3 pieces. Two plastic coupling gears and the isolator. Now to put the coupling on the motor and transmission use something like a socket with a hammer to knock the coupling flush up onto the shafts of each. Put it all back together and you should be working again.. Hope this Helps

You have to remove the case off the unit , remove the pump retaining clips, the motor, and IF THE MOTOR HAS A CAPASITOR ON THE RIGHT SIDE WITH 2 RED WIRES CONNECTED TO IT USE AN INSULATED SCREWDRIVER TO SHORT OUT THE 2 THERMINALS ON THE CAPASITOR TO DISCHARGE IT IF YOU DONT SHORT OUT THE CAPASITOR IT COULD IN SOME CASES BE A DEADLY SHOCK, REMOVE THE WIRING CONNECTOR FROM THE MOTOR remove the motor retaining clips and the coupling is right in frount of where you removed the motor just be safe at all costs
