For some reason several apps with their own cc controls can override the cc controls on your TV. So go through the other apps you have used and turn off the cc in each of them. For me it was HULU. For you it’s could be something else.

I have a Vizio VX37L that i purchased on 12/26/08 and I had the same problem by 1/4/09. My five year old son loves to futz around with buttons and switches and he somehow enabled closed captions from the front of my Motorola digital cable box (I had it hooked up to the Vizio via HDMI 1.)
What you need to do is turn off your cable box and leave the Vizio on. Hit the "Menu" button on the front of the cable box and that should bring up a setup screen on your TV. Using the down cursor button on the front of the cable box, go down to the "Close Caption" section on the setup screen. It probably says "Enabled." Click on the right cursor button to disable CC and you should be good to go.

Thank you, It was the cable box and not the tv. Turned it off by following your instrruction except I had to use the remote to navigate the menu.

This technique worked in October, 2023. My cable box did not have a curser button in the front but the curser button on the hand control did the job following the same process. Thank you so much. Now I am not at my wits end any longer!!!

I didn't find my exact problem or solution online so I'm posting it for everyone.

My Vizio 42" kept displaying Closed Caption: Off at the top right of the screen. And no matter if I turned it back on and then off again, could I get rid of the words at the top right of the screen.

Eventually I went to the Menu on my FIOS TV box and went to MENU>SETTINGS>TELEVISION>MODES>DISABLE to finally get rid of the text on the screen. Sheer luck that I tried that setting because I have no idea what it is or what it has to do with Closed Captions. But so far seems to have worked. I hope this helps someone else.

We could not get the captioning to go off either after it had suddenly came on one day so we bought another tv and guess what it was still on come to find out it was the cable box that had to be changed out.

Before taking any dastic action like sending out the set for service, carefuly read the instruction manual. Call the tech support for your TV set to see if they have a user level solution.

If it possible that there is a defect in the set. What I have seen when I was working in TV servicing, is the closed caption IC become defective, or some other defective component that is not allowing the turn-off command to occure. It is also possible that there is a fault in the uPC, and thus the turn off command is not being executed.

We had the same problem. We turned off cc on the vizio tv, but it remained on. We turned it off also on our cable box and our fire stick, still it remained on.
Finally we went into our Hulu live tv and cc was on, we turned it off and the problem was fixed.
So make sure it is off on everything that is connected to your tv
When watching Hulu press up button on your remote 2 times and it will show on or off.
Press off and return to your tv.

Problem was with my cable remote controller. After going nuts for days trying to turn it off, I look there and bye-bye CC. I would check that as well.

How do get closed caption Vizio VF550M 55 in. LCD HDTV?

Closed Caption availability may depend on the source. To enable caption viewing, press Menu (on the TV or the remote). Navigate to the Setup menu with the Up/Down arrows on the remote or the Channel Up/Down buttons on the TV. Once Setup is highlighted, press the Menu button again. Repeat the up/down navigation to the CC menu and Menu to select. The first option should be On/Off. Now use the left/right arrows on the remote (or volume up/down buttons on the TV) to choose the desired CC state. Press Menu to save or Last to cancel and return to the previous menu. Press after pressing Menu to return to the previous menu. If your content is from a digital source, you can make adjustments in the appearance of the captions by navigating to those sections of the CC sub-menu. If you would like some idea of what the screen will look like as you navigate the On-Screen Display, see the manual on Page 41. Vizio makes the manual available on their support page. The direct link to the manual is cdn.vizio.com/documents/downloads/hdtv/VF550M/155Manual.pdf . (Note: you'll need Adobe Reader or a similar program to access the manual.)

For some content, you may need to enable the captions at a set-top box (cable/satellite receiver/etc.). In that case, consult the manual for those devices or post a comment with the make/model for additional help.

I hope this helps.

My Vizio VA19L 19'' LCD Television's closed captioning isn't working. The closed caption isn't on the settings menu either. How can I get closed captioning on?

Just press the CC button on the remote. Some TV stations may not send out CC data. Pressing the CC button many times will cycle thru all the options including OFF.

How to turn closed caption off?

If the cc button on your Sharp remote control isn't turning them off then the captions may be coming from your cable box. The hidden menu to access closed captioning on the cable box is usually found by turning it off and then (yes I did say turn the cable box off) then press the menu button on the front of it immediately after turning it off. Then you navigate down to captions and disable them. When you turn the cable box back on the captions should no longer be there.

New Toshiba 37" flat screen always displays Closed Captions. Feature is turned off with TV remote, feature not available on Cable remote. Toshiba says it is Cable company problem, Mediacom cable can...

I've had this problem for a bit, it seems that there are two ways to turn off the closed captions.
1:Menu--->Preferences--->CC and Digital Audio Selectors. This displays the menu on the bottom of the screen with the choices of Closed Caption formats and digital audio. This is not the correct menu to be in. This turns off the CC as long as the TV is not turned off or the input is not changed. This is a temporarily either turns the CC on or off.
The Solution:
2:Menu--->Setup--->TV Settings--->Closed Captions Settings Displays a menu in the center of the screen, with the options of Turning the Closed Captions on and off, the Analog CC Mode and Digital CC settings. You must turn the Closed Captions off in this menu or the changes to CC are temporary.
For the record:
1. I'm aware I'm 2 years late on this, but I just want others to be able to solve this issue on their Toshiba. Don't worry, my Toshiba is the same age as yours
2. I've lost faith in Tech Support ages ago. I'm sorry that they were that incompetent.
3. Its ridiculous that there are two entirely different menus to alter the closed captions. Took me forever to figure this out.
Hope this helps you and others.
