I have a 1988 40hp evinrude it started missing then quit alltogether it does not have any spark from either spark plug

    Not sure if 88 has points but my 1976 was having the same problem as I had never changed any thing but plugs and lower unit oil and one water pump in 40yrs I checked points and they were sticking tune up kit $25 now motor runs smooth as new

It could be either your CDI unit or your Ignition coils. Sounds more like a CDI failure. It could also be your Neutral safety switch, where you plug in the plastic keylike plug. make sure that circuit is working or try to pull or push the actual pin where the teather plugs in.

What is it doing exactly... is the engine missing? ..Does it do this every time you take off? (engine hot and cold?).. Was this one of the engines that require the spark plugs to be oriented with relation to the electrode location? .... (Spark plugs take a beating in a two-cycle engine)..

Hi Terry..When were the spark plugs replaced in it last?.it could be a nice easy fix if it has a dodgy spark plug in it..Other option is to check plug leads for cracks & coil casings for cracks as well..

How do I test ignition,points,coils ect.on 68 evinrude 9.5 sportwin?
Same way as you do on a car. You missed the spark plug wires. Look for corrosion on the rotor cap and measure the resistance of all the spark plug wires .
The high resistance ones need changing.

If the engine runs OK when cold and starts to miss when warm usually spark is the problem. Make sure the choke is open all the way. How does the plug look? When the engine quits then restarts and runs then quits again but at a shorter interval the ignition coil is the culprit. Good luck

The spark plugs were changed a year and a half ago by ford and the boot was not on the spark plug.
Push it back on. As long as she runs fine, don't sweat the small stuff.

1998 15 hp evinrude suddenly quit
There are many possibilities. Bad fuel or oil ratio could have fouled plugs. Tank problems. Bad coil. Water pump failure. Check throttle under hood. You can test ignition by grounding plug wires and pulling engine over and see if spark jumps. Dead mans switch fell out?

1999 windstar 3.8 starts up miss then quits runs good after that
Does the miss quit or does the engine quit. If it misses for a while and then quits missing, you've probably got a fouled spark plug caused by oil fouling the plug after the engine sits a bit. The root problem is leaky valve seals. The quick fix is try new plugs.
