Hi, The Earth Leakage Breaker (ELCB) in our home starting tripping occasionally on the switchboard, then more frequently until the wife hassled me to fix it. I did some isolating, and it turned out to be the fridge causing the problem. When you turn the fridge on....it beeps at you like it does whenever you turn it back on after you have moved it or something, and then after 30-40Sec...there's a relay click in the back of the fridge, and then "ching".....the ELCB trips. Our fridge is a Fisher and Paykel(E442B Australian 240V model). It has a Active Smart Module controlling the Compressor, Defrost, Lights...bla bla...etc. It's the brains of the Fridge, and the source of the relay/switch sound that I hear about 1 fempto second before the ELCB trips on the Switchboard. At first I thought.....ahhh the compressor for sure. Every time you reset the breaker and turn the fridge on, it probably has a delaye start of 30-40sec, before the relay clicks on to start the compressor....and then "ching".....ELCB trips because the compressor is toasted. So to prove my theory........I disconnected the cable from the Active Smart Module going to the Compressor(and there's only one cable going to the compressor that supplies power and the control signals/feedback). I then turned the fridge on......30-40 seconds later, the relay/switch clicking sound and ...."ching" the ELCB trips again. I'm now thinking "Active Switch Module" ???? My 3 questions to you guys if I may please ..... 1. Have you heard of the Fisher Paykel (New Zealand) brand ? :-) 2. Have you come across this fault before in a Fisher and Paykel Fridge ? 3. Do you know if these Active Switch Modules are fixabale, or is it a replacement module only ? Regards Jeff Electronics Tech No Experience with Fridges though :-)

Probably the defrost heater element blown and down to earth.Mine has the same problem. If you access the control module and disconnect the plug with the 2 larger brown wires and check resistance to earth ,any reading will show if that is the problem. Unfortunately I can't tell you how to access the evaporator to replace the element, I can't work out how to remove the plastic panels. Your fridge should work OK with the heater disconnected but will ice up the evaporator after a little while , Perhaps turning the power off overnight without opening the doors every couple of days might work.

My guess is the defrost heater. Corrosion would cause a small current leakage to the earth circuit, thereby tripping the ELCB safety circuit (Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker). Call serviceman to replace defrost heater.

ELCB also known as an RCD (Residual current device).

Miele countertop stem oven- cannot press the on button- model DG 1050. The button will not depress so I cannot switch it on

Check whether the circuit breaker has tripped
If this is not the case, disconnect the appliance for approx. 1 minute from the electricity supply. To do this:
- Switch the appropriate circuit breaker off, or
- Switch off the earth leakage circuit breaker (ELCB). Reconnect to the mains supply and switch the appliance on.

If it still does not heat up, contact a qualified electrician or the Miele Service Department.

I just replaced the control panel touch pad on a Maytag wall over MEW6530dds it worked but now the circuit breaker continues to trip. Anyone know what can be done? Thank you!

As usual which circuit breaker is an important indication of the type of fault.
RCD - residual current device compares the current in the positive line and compares it with the current in the neutral line and trips if it is different - it means current has become lost, most likely leaked to ground because of an insulation or similar fault.

ELCB - earth leakage circuit breaker trips if current is detected in the ground line.

MCB - micro circuit breaker; the modern version of the consumer unit fuse and is resettable. This trips in response to a short circuit or overload.

When i turn on the tub it trips the breaker why

Depends which breaker - if the rcd or elcb trips there is a power leakage to ground because of a fault. If it is the mcb there is a different sort of fault causing the appliance to attempt to consume too much current, a short circuit...

As soon as i plug it in the circuit breaker trips.

You have a short. It is either short to ground or short circuiting. Check the cord very carefully for breaks. Make sure the ground plug is in tacked. Also try a different outlet to make sure the problem is the tool.

When I plug in (and switch on) the hostess trolley it trips the electric in the house. However, works perfectly in another house.

Hi,
sounds as if your home power distribution / Fuse board has an earth leakage trip and is sensing a leak on the trolley, perhaps the other house is not so well protected, or the Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker ( ELCB) trip is faulty. It would make sense not to use the trolley until you have had it checked out

Machine keeps tripping out when starting wash cycle - electrics have been checked by electrician - no problems- have managed to get it to spin but not to wash

Hi

The washing machine is obviously drawing too much current for the breaker to handle. This could be due to the washing machine drawing more that it should or because the breaker cannot handle the current the machine needs, coupled with the other machines on the ring main. If the fuse on the plug of the washing machine does not blow, then it could be that there are too many appliances on the ring main. The fuse on the machine may not blow however, if the breaker has a faster blow time than the fuse in the plug. Try plugging the washing machine into another ring main. Or try plugging out all the other appliances on the same ring main and test it out.

If the ELCB (Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker) is tripping only when the washing machine is running then something in the machine is faulty.

One common problem is the heating element. Over time they tend to crack and when the water gets in, the ELCB will trip out. This can be problematic to diagnose as offten the element will only trip after a period of heating. Bottom line, if it is tripping the ELCB then it is dangerous and should be fixed before any further use.

Samsung Fridge keeps tripping main electricity?

This needs a serious check up as it is possible that the compressor motor is drawing inmore current than required. Also check if the capacitor had failed.
If the trip is a ELCB then check if the earth connection( ground) is poor and so the circuit breaker sensing external voltage will trip off.
Use a clamp testor to measure the starting current of the motor to confirm.

Maytag model GS2126PADW is tripping the ELCB. It will run for about one hour before tripping. After tripping, it trips the ELCB every time it is turned on. However if left off for an hour or so it can be...

The ELCB ( Electrical Leakage Circuit Breaker) is designed to detect any leakage of electrical current.
When the current leakage occurs, the ELCB then trips the electricity supply within a fraction of a second of the leakage being detected, before the magnitude of the current reaches a lethal level.
Therefore any possibility of serious injuries due to electric shock to persons who are in contact with the electrical appliance at that particular moment is minimized. Have a licensed Electrician check out your outlet and an Appliance Technician check your refrigerator if outlet proves okay.

After switching on time elcb tripping

UPS systems by their very design leak current from the input filters to ground.

Some UPS systems will not work on earth leakage equipment.

You could try it on a regular socket, it may work just fine.

Of course, if their is any doubt consult a competent technician first.

Thanks for using FixYa, please let me know how it goes.
