Ceiling fan power

The motor hums softly, so I know something is happening, but it doesn't turn. If I spin the blades by hand, it will continue to turn slowly, just not on it's own.

when fan is turned on; there is either a slight humming sound, or nothing.

Fan is about 9 years old; moderate use. Is motor warranted

    I have the same problem.

I was told is the capacitor and it is not covered by the warranty because it is not considered part of the motor and it is pass the 1 yr. Can you say "Bad Customer Service"??? $12.95 to get a replacement. The cap has to have 4 wires (Purple, gray, orange and yellow). I got no other specs from them. I'll have to get it down myself to see if I can figure it out.

To get this info, I did the run around and HomeDepot gave me the number (800)283-6513. It is not from HamptonBay itself but from a Fan warranty company.

I think this is the last Hampton Bay fan that I will buy. Their is no way to contact them. Nothing in their website or owner's manual.

    Good luck.

Maybe a bit late,
I suggest you go back to the shop, i am sure there is some kind of warranty on your ceiling fan.
If the shop can't do anything ask them to order replacement parts.

Here is a link which may help you finding the right Ceiling Fan Parts

I have a newer antigua fan from Hampton Bay and had the same problem with the blades not turning and getting a humming sound. Found out the capacitor is blown which keeps the fan from burning up. You can get from www.hamptonbay.com for $12.95. The number is on the black box that has the 4 wires...6ur 5ur 3.8ur. There is a number at the web site to order from. You can also get some parts from www.switchco.com. I have also had problems with the blades rubbing against the light which is probably what initially caused the capacitor to blow. Not sure how they fell and hope we have it fixed now. They are heavy blades. Too bad this fan has so many problems as it is beautiful.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for posting this information. My fan is humming and if you give the blades a push they will turn very slowing. My friend who is an electrician told me to "turn it off, it may catch on fire!" Will have him take it apart and hope it is the capacitor. If not, hopefully I can get a new motor. I love the fan! It is so pretty. -Becky

It sounds like the fan motor has blown out. Is this an old fan? The motors do burn out every 5-10 years, depending on the brand and quality of motor.

A customer of mine has a very nice Hunter original ceiling fan that she never oiled and now the fan just hums and wont spin. Is it possible to repair after no oil damage is done?

Put some oil in and turn blades by hand to lubricate the bearings. If the motor is frozen, then you would have to take it to a service center or send back to Hunter for repair.

Hello, I replaced a light fixture on my existing Emerson ceiling fan. The light worked right away but the blades didn't turn. I could hear power going to the motor so I went back into the switch cup and...

Signs of a bad capacitor in a ceiling fan include:

  • Fan runs slowly or not at all on all speeds
  • Fan will not start but will spin if started by hand
  • Certain speeds are slow or do not work
  • The motor hums and turns freely by hand but will not spin

The capacitor is usually a black box inside the switch housing of the fan. If this box appears burnt or melted in any way, that is also the sign of a bad capacitor and it should be replaced.

    Fan won't run at all.

If you plug it in and turn it on, does it "humm".
If so, it is getting power. It could be the blades are stuck on something: do they turn by hand?
The motor could be dirty also, is the blade hard to turn?
It can be repaired by Vornado, or you can dis-assemble the motor and clean it.

Motor hums but blades don't spin

It should have something in motor block blocking the motor to turn.
when it is OFF position ,you try to turn it by hand to see if it spins freely or not ? You may hear a sound of friction that blocks the motor. if this is the case try to find a local electrical expert to unblock the motor..
    Good luck.

Ceiling fan will not spin, but I hear it

It most likely has a faulty capacitor not allowing it to start. Remove the light kit or the cap where the light kit mounts, the speed and reversing switch will be in there along with a capacitor. You should be able to buy a replacement capacitor at most home improvement stores.

    42" ceiling fan

    1. Try to rotate it by free hand and see it is free machanically. If not, it ball-bearing/bush should require lubrication or replacement.(Note at this satage there should be no electric supply to fan.)
2.If it is free, rotate it fast by hand, then immediately switch it on.
a)If it continue to rotate, then there is fault in capacitor.Replace it.
    b)If not, ask me.

    Ceiling fan

There's a rubber circle that is the damper between the blades and the motor shaft that rotates. The circle has spokes connecting the outer ring, which the blades screw into, to the inner ring which attaches to the shaft and holds it. If the spokes break you get the symptoms you describe, motor hums but no rotation, but blades can turn manually if you hand turn them them. If this is the case you need to remove and replace the blade mounting ring/damper. (About 25 bucks online)
