Sounds like the color wheel is not turning properly. I would recommend calling 1-800-samsung to set up repair with an authorized service center. I would not try to replace it yourself. The part costs $120.00- $180.00.

is it completely dark or just very dim or dark on one side? if it's just dark on one side, you have a failing LCD panel, very common for older Samsung panels. If it is completely black on one side split down the middle, you could be dealing with a bad panel, bad t-con board, or a faulty LCD panel ribbon connection.
i had this problem with my samsung a while back same symtoms everything and after hectic research i replaced a few blown(swollen) capasitors on the power supply and bam! it worked? its worth a try hope it helps
Call Samsung (1-800-726-7864)about the problem. They are aware of theproblem and offer a 1 time free repair. Therepair is generally done in your home. Samsungdid tell me that they even take care of the bill outside your warranty. I hopethis helps
It sounds like an Intergrated Circuit (IC) has fried. Even on a good day, this is not something you can attack at home. As a tech (and as an owner of that model samsung), I'd need a map & tools to know what's going on. Your best bet in this situation is to contact Samsung and let them recommend an authorized service center in your area. Sorry I can't be of more help, but this is a rather serious problem.
the HDTV has a heat-related problem check your fans. Do they remove heat? the vertical chips paint the screen from top to middle and, middle to bottom so; your top to middle vertical chip is overheating as is your video chip; that is why you have "glitter" in the back ground. get rid of the heat or, bye,bye TV.
It appears that it has something to do with Progressive Scan been turned on. Progressive Scan is a feature built in your dvd player, wich by using it, it would give you a better picture//resolution on your tv, you need to use Component or HDMI cables to hook up the dvd to your tv if you want this settings, but if you are using composite RCA cables (Red,White & Yellow) and the Progressive funtion is turned on by accident, it may give you a split screen, black & white, or no picture problems. Also if you are using Component (Blue, Green & Red) cables, if one of them is unplug, the picture can be out of colors, or no picture. Check this things, if not, write back with more details about your set up.
Our 42" LG picture is also split down the middle. It doesn't matter if it is cable or a DVD. I would love to know if anyone has found out the solution to this prob. The TV is only 3 years old...
A month from purchase you shouldn't even bother yourself with this.
Their problem.... give the shop/samsung a call.
If you have no reason to suspect any cable problem, and a different input device(other than the DVD) doesn't affect it, don't waste time and get on the phone.
Good luck
