Whirlpool duet washer ghw9250mw1 door won't close (latch will not catch and lock shut) How to fix?

  • prem mathew May 21, 2010

Try some WD40 spray in the lock area. If this does not work, just change the lock, you can diy (do it yourself) by checking which wires go where before dismantling.

1. Unplug washer.
2. Remove the outer portion of the door bellow. This is the gray rubber boot around the door. Feel around the edge of the door bellow where it attaches to the front of the washer. You will find a wire retaining hoop in the seam between the rubber and the front case. Follow this wire hoop to the bottom of the door bellow and you will find a tension spring. Carefully, stretch this spring apart and remove the wire hoop.
3. Pull the rubber bellow from the door facing on the front of the washer being careful not to rip or tear it. Once removed, fold the rubber backwards inside the drum so you can access behind the front panel. DO NOT remove the rubber bellow from the wash tub.
4. The door latch assembly is located behind the front panel of the washer on the right hand side. Locate and remove the three screws on the washer front that hold the door latch assembly in place. The whole assembly should come free from the washer front and be held by a plastic mounting bracket and several wire connectors.
5. Carefully remove the latch assembly from the plastic mounting bracket BEFORE attempting to unplug any wires. It makes it much easier to access if you do.
6. Unplug the wire connectors using care not to break any of the wires. You may want to write them down, but I believe they will only plug into their respective slots.
7. Remove the old door latch and install the new one in the reverse order of the steps I just presented to you. Plug the wires back in first, then place the whole assembly back into the plastic mounting bracket, and then reattach to the front of the washer.
8. Now, when you get the reinstalling the rubber door boot, you may want to get the assistance of a second pair of hands as it can be difficult sometimes to manipulate the wire retainer back into place. Carefully reattach the rubber bellow to the door facing on the front of the washer first.
9. Starting at the top of the door bellow at the 12 o'clock position begin inserting the wire hoop back into the groove. Work your way around with both hands to the 4 and 8 o'clock positions. (This is where you could use those second pair of hands). While holding a slight downward tension on the wire hoop to keep it in place, pull the tension spring apart enough to snap the remaining part of the hoop into place at the bottom. Once you've completed these steps make sure the door closes and latches properly. NEVER slam a door with an electronic latch. They can break easily.

Now plug the washer back in and test operate. NOTE: You can run diagnostics on these washers by referring to the tech sheet provided by the manufacturer. The tech sheet is located behind the lower panel under the door, or along the interior cabinet walls. Included, are instructions on how to run diagnostics and troubleshooting tips associated with the list of fault codes. It is recommended that this tech sheet remain inside the washer to prevent it from being lost.

How do I get the Whirlpool washer door to close all the way? I think the door lock is jammed

The lock/latch on your door is electromechanical, incorporating a electrical safety catch. See if a reboot (unplug for 10 minutes, then plug it back in.) does anything for you. It could be a latch, wiring, motherboard, door closed safety circuit or something in the pause circuit.

I have a whirlpool front washer and the door will not latch shut . What should I do?

Examine the latch on the door. is it broken? If so, then replace it. If not, replace the catch on the machine.

Whirlpool duet we broke the catch that holds door closed on washe

If you are referring to the door latch mechanism on the door facing, the following link explains step-by-step how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3575840-replacing_a_door_latch

If you are referring to the catch on the door itself, it can also be replaced. Just remove the two Torx (T-2) screws that hold it in place and remove. Replace as necessary with a new catch. Replacement parts can be purchased at any of the following websites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

All these sites are reputable and offer great service with competitive pricing, so shop and compare. The first three sites I listed also include helpful exploded view parts diagrams to assist you in locating and properly identifying the parts you need.

If the model number is correct, the part number for the door latch is 8182634. The door catch part number is 8181651. You can view these parts under the "Door and Latch Parts" heading as items 7 and 9.

If you have any questions, please post back and let me know. I hope this is helpful to you.

My Whirlpool duet washer lights flash/beep

probably your door then, look at the door itself, at the latch is it broken? should form a complete square hole with four sides. if broken some part is probably inside lock asm. if complete, look at lock and determine if its in the lock position with door open, a arm will be up preventing the latch from going in. replace as necessary. Old duets (red lights) use standard lock asm same as GE and samsung. New duets (green lights) use whirlpool/new maytag unique asm. New locks come in two interchageable models, German (made in china) and Mexican, Mexican model is more troublesome, get german.
If lights flash during a cycle or other time, its giving a code, note the F code displayed

Whirlpool duet washer door is open. I can't close it because the latch is stuck in the "locked" position.

The first thing to try is to hold the cancel button for 15 seconds. The more labor intensive solution is this: Remove the panel beneath the door (2 or 3 screws). Reach up, there is a little "ring" beneath the door lock. Pull this down, it releases the mechanism.

F22

I have search for this and found:

This error code indicates that the door is not locking.
Is the washer door firmly shut?
The door must be completely closed for the washer to operate. The door may look as if it's closed, but it may not be latched. Open the door and firmly close it.
Were you washing a large load?
Before you close the washer door, check for laundry items sticking out beyond the door opening. Leave enough space in the washer to allow the clothes to freely tumble. Reduce your load size if needed.

F dL symbol on Whirlpool duet HT

It is saying there is a problem with your door Lock. when you close the door does it hold like it use too? try to open and close the door if it doesn't really close properly then you will just need a door latch. If the machine gives you an f11 code then its the main computer board that can also give your the door lock error. I would check the door first though.
