LJ P3005, will not print from tray 2. Tray 2 is set as default on the printer and the OS printer software but the system wants you to press the green check button and it then pulls from tray 1, if no paper in tray 1 it won't print at all. The printer will print a test page from itself from Tray 2.

SOURCE: settings in HP Printer LJ 4100.

The 4100 will look at tray 1 first then tray 2 If tray 1 is empty it will pull from tray 2 if the papersize matches the job otherwise back to tray 1 and ask for the paper.
Your machine likely thinks the paper in tray 2 is not the size you want. For instance you have LETTER in tray2 But the machine thinks it is legal.
The LJ 4100 detects the paper size in tray 2 automatically. If you print a configuration page:
MENU them INFORMATION then ITEM then CONFIGURATION PAGE then SELECT.
The page will print and show what size paper the machine thinks is in Tray 2 if it says LEGAL and you have LETTER you need to Check The Paper Backstop in TRAY 2.
The back stop sets the length of the paper if it is not at Letter (8 1/2 x 11) the machine will not detect LETTER. Even if it just a little bit off or between positions.

If it is set at LETTER then you may have bad switches in the machine that are operated by the tray.
Or the arms on the tray that operate the switches are not moving properly.
You will find the arms on the rt, side of the tray and feel them change position when you move the backstop.
Hope this helps.

SOURCE: hp lj 4250 tray 1 stoped feeding automatically.

Hello,

Here is the info from the service manual about tray configuration.

The value corresponds to the media size that is currently loaded in tray 1. ANY: If both the type and size for tray 1 are set to ANY, the printer will pull media from tray 1 first if media is loaded in the tray. A size other than ANY: The printer does not pull from tray 1 unless the type or size of the print job matches the type or size loaded in this tray.

So set both the paper size and type on tray one to "ANY" and you should be good to go.

I hope this helps, if so please rate my solution.

I have the full service manual available for instant download for $6.95 if you are interested.

Click File > Print > Properties to check your settings.
To verify that tray 1 is working, put paper in tray 1. Press green check until you see Information Menu. Scroll using arrows until you see Print Menu Map then press green check. If it prints from tray 1, your problem is not with the printer, but with the PC settings.

i has follow this step, but need to press green check button to resume print menu map.

tray 1 manual feed set to A4 paper plain size
manual feed is on.
there is paper on tray 1
ps setting tray1 manual feed is A4 plain size paper.

send print to tray1 manual feed even there is paper at tray 1
i still need go to the printer and press green check button to resume print

SOURCE: default paper tray selection for HP LaserJet 4200tn

1) When the printer receives a print job, it selects the tray by trying to match the requested paper type and size with what has been loaded in the trays. Using an “autoselect” process, it searches all available trays for the paper that satisfies the request, starting with the bottom tray and ending with the top tray (tray 1). The printer begins printing the job as soon as it finds the proper type/size.

2) If paper is loaded in tray 1 and tray 1 is set "TRAY 1 TYPE=ANY" and "TRAY 1 SIZE=ANY" on the
Paper Handling menu, the printer will always pull paper from tray 1 first.

Won't print to right tray

I had this problem and solved it like this:

  1. Right click on printer driver in printers and faxes.
  2. Select printing preferences
  3. Choose paper quality tab
  4. Set paper size (A4 in my case)
  5. Set paper source to printer-auto-select. This is different from the default "Automatically select"

As long as tray 1 is empty, tray 2 should now kick in. Setting the paper source as tray 2 didn't work at all.

You seem to have to set this on each client computer though - even if you are sharing the printer over a network (4200n).
