Chech when it does not work are the lights on Dim?
If so try reseating the flat ribbon cables between the CCU board and the interface board(the one with all the lights and buttons). If not it will be one of the two boards being intermintent. I have had several people replace both boards and the real problem was just the cables needed reseating

Why do the Automatic cycles on my Whirlpool Duet Electric Dryer not always work?

In some dryer's the control panel relies on a thermistor rather than a CYCLING thermostat to regulate the drum's air temperature by monitoring the component's resistance changes; resistance goes down as temperature increases and up when temperature decreases. Once the drum's air temperature reaches a certain level required to dry clothes, the control panel shuts off the heater. The panel will turn the heater on again and begin another heating cycle when the thermistor indicates that more heat is needed to keep the air temperature constant inside the drum

Lastly check your moister sensor. ( located inside the dryer door usually) Especially if machine seems to shut down early and clothes are still wet.
Test with a meter at room temperature and it should show continuity.
A failed moisture sensor will affect the dryer run time in the automatic moisture sensing cycle but it will not affect the heating of the dryer or the timed cycle. Which are reflected by the thermostats.

Maytag MED5700TQ occasionally completely shuts down during cool down mode

Sure!
You may have a bad timer, that is turning off the electricity to the motor while the heater is still energized.

Long time ago, dryers had about 3 "automatic shut-off's" two on the heating element, and one on the motor.
Because of the lint that comes with drying clothes, fire is always a danger.
Today, the "thermostat shut-off's" are up to 5, 6, or 7 on some models!
Sounds like your dryer is getting hot enough to trip one of these. When the whole machine cools down, the thermostat resets, and the machine starts again.'
I had a dryer do the same thing. The problem with that one was nothing more than dust and lint in the motor, and all I had to do was vacuum out or blow out the motor about once or twice a year.
Be blessed

My dryer will dry a load and then the control panel will not light up and the dryer will only work again sometimes when I unplug the dryer for a few hours

I can honeslty tell you that the control panel is going bad. I have already replaced mine once and it is acting up again. Just today it would not light up at all.
