Kenmore 417 Washer - Brown marks

Our front load washer is leaving brown marks (some heavy, some faint)...have read that the culprit is a bearing leaking some lubricant...others claim mildew or build-up...any clue out how to resolve this problem - I will take the machine apart if need be!

Thanks aborcass...have a few more details to share - seems that we use HE detergent at the lowest settings (one)...also, the drum started to make a rumbling noise at the same time the brown streaks started...ugh.

That is affirmative, there is play in the up/down tub area. Scale of 1-10, 10 being the most difficult, what would you rank the rear bearing part repair as...? Thanks for your support!

THANK YOU! Appreciate your prompt support...very helpful. Have a great evening.

    Washer1 out.

Same problem. My machine is a 417.40042990 model.

I have a full load of white towels that seem ruined.... plus I am afraid to wash anything else.
If it is bearing grease it sounds like a major repair.

I have the same problem. For those who think its mildew or that the solution is a certain type of detergent, you need to see it. These are heavy grease streaks caused by something in the machine. I hope someone here has this repaired and can tell me how much it costs to get fixed. I am REALLY disappointed with Kenmore. This shouldn't have happen after 5 years. I have clothes that are ruined.

These machines are terrible. I just had a service person in and he told me that my machine (only six years old) has bearings that are done and they also caused the shocks to go. I went to Sears to talk to the sales person about my Kenmore machine and she said she has never heard of this problem. Meanwhile, friends have also had similar issues - my clothes are ruined and Sears just tried to sell me a replacement machine. I don't know if I will go with another front loader - my parents have had the same washing machine for over 25 years - I guess they are not supposed to last more than 5 or 6 years now.

Dont start pulling machine apart just yet. check your detergent first, you NEED to be using an HE detergent liquid better then powder, if fabric softener is being used thin it out a little(cheaper fabric softeners have a hard time breaking down.did you switch deterent recently??? there is a new product just hit the market AFFRESH tabs (available in home depot and best buy) sure itll be in supermarkets soon. Its designed to clean ou tresidual detergent pockets building up inside all frontloading machines

rumbling noise?? like you can reach inside and lift the inner tub up and down a little play in the tub area??? sounds like a job for a pro. check for possible extended warr on rear bearing parts anyway

ummm give a solid 8. but not something you would do yourself, without a part warr, probalby cost prohibitive repair, with a part warr, an authorized servicer will have to perform the work.(even then labor cost be be prohibitive

Brown marks on clothes. I have put the machine on a boil wash with nothing in it. washed all pars of machine and it is still happing, Please help

Hello,

Does the drum sound noisy when it spins if it does then I would suspect the bearings are badly worn and the grease from the bearing is getting inside the drum.

Hope this helps.

Kenmore 80 Series washer leaves brown grease marks

Remove the agitator and check the shaft seal underneath the plastic drive block at the top of the shaft. Move the shaft in different directions to check the condition of the top bearing. If none or very slight, replace the seal at the top of the shaft supporting post. Clean any grease that is outside of the seal when you are done. Be sure to not damage the seal surface on the shaft when removing/replacing the seal and pre-grease the new seal's inner lip before installing.

Brown spots on clothes

Brown spots indicates a bearing is breaking up, the spots are the grease from the bearing and as the seal breaks down due to the bearings going off centre, the grease gets in the drum.
Get the bearings replaced if affordable.

My Kenmore heavy duty tumble washer is leaving a light brown stain on white or light clothes. It is likely staining dark clothes but of course they are too dark to see a light stain. It is definitely...

The brown stains are likely coming from the felt drum seal. The OEM adhesive is tar based - and after time and use - breaks down.

You'll need a new felt seal - and the adhesive that is used should be silicone based... eliminating the brown streaks.

Iam getting brown spots on white shorts after washing with Kenmore front loading washing machine

If it's gunk or build up the marks should wash away. In this case run a long cycle using "affresh" or "washer fresh" with an empty load and use the hottest water available to help rinse the gunk out.

If the marks do not wash away, it could be grease due to a bearing failure. Listen for loud growling or grinding either by spinning the drum by hand or putting it into a spin cycle. If this is the case, the rear tub assembly (contains bearing) will need to be replaced. Not much can be done about the ruined clothes :(

Dryer is leaving brown streaks on cotton clothes

The 417 dryers have two seals on the front panel, the top seal has drum glides which wear down over time. Because the drum rests on those glides, when it wears down it leaves a gap between the drum and the seal, clothes will drag in that gap and come out with rust and/or seal adhesive stains. Try replacing the top and lower seals, this works most of the time...sometimes though, if left unattended long enough, the lack of support from the front glides causes too much strain on the rear drum bearing, and even after replacing the seals clothes may still catch, although the brown spotting will stop for awhile. You can feel the gap if you run your hand along the inside of the drum at the seal point.
