My Brother PE-770 is supposed to be able to use downloaded designs, using a thumb drive. I downloaded a bunch of designs from Brother and created some myself using Sierra software. The embroidery machine recognizes some of them but others just don't show up on the screen. I can't see any significant difference between those it will read and those it does not. I have tried two different thumb drives and that didn't make any difference. I have tried turning the machine on and off and reloading designs. nothing makes any difference.

I'm not an expert, but maybe your bobbin is wound incorrectly, or not put in the bobbin case properly?  Hope it is something as simple as this.  Good luck!

SOURCE: Thread knotting and bunching on the backside of design

Knotting or looping on the bottom is most likely from not enough upper thread tension or way to much bobbin thread tension.
When you thread your machine, make sure the thread goes inside the second thread guide where the thread comes down in front of your machine. The presser foot must be in the up position for that guide to open and allow the thread to correctly "seat" in that guide.
Try this...Before you thread the needle, pull on the thread. With the foot in the up position there should not be any tension at all...lower the foot and you should have to tug slightly on the thread to get it to move. If lowering the foot does not increase your upper thread tension then you are not in the thread guide correctly or you have a mechanical problem with the upper thread tensioner.
One last thing to check. You can get a wax build up or lint packed in the thread tension guide. This is a common problem. Run a Q-tip through the guide and clean it out. If that guide gets built up with wax or lint it will not clamp down on the upper thread and you will not have the correct tension.
With the bobbin case threaded, pull out the thread. It should not be super tight or loose. It should be like pulling Scotch tape off a roll as far as tension goes.
Get your upper and lower thread tensions set up correctly and your problem will be solved.
Good luck, bushvideo

SOURCE: Blank Card, PE Design says it's a ''read only''

Hi - I think the problem is that although the Magic Card is compatible with your machine, it is not recognized by with the PED writer. I have the Brother PED-Basic sfotware and a Brother PED-Basic USB card writer box. The only blank card that the my Brother reader can read is the blank cards made by Brother. Which embroidery machine do you have (not critical - I'm just curious).

If you have both a Magic card and Magic Box, the box should have it's own software. I don't think the PE Design software recognizes non-brother equipment (bummer). The link I've provided below is to a dealer that sells two different blank Brother Cards. One of the cards is 1 mb. The other is 4 mb. They are the same price. You might check your documentation to see whether both cards are compatible with your reader and software. If you're not sure, you can call the dealer directly and ask. I have dealt with this dealer many times and find that they have great prices and are very knowledgeable. This link should take you to the page on which the blank Brother Cards are displayed - scroll down if you don't see them right away.

This dealer is located on the East Coast, so you probably won't be able to reach them by phone until tomorrow. I don't know of a dealer on the West Coast to whom I can refer you. One more thought - Babylock equipment is often interchangeable with Brother equipment. If you have a Babylock dealer in your area, you might be able to find a blank Babylock card that you can buy off the shelf. Just make sure you can return it just in case it won't work.

Let me know if I understand your situation correctly - if not, send me another comment and I'll be happy to research further. BTW - if it turns out that you can't use the Magic card and can't return it, you can probably sell it online.

Thanks for getting back - I really love doing this. If you have general questions about embroidery, feel free to ask. I own several consumer embroidery machines, and I operated a commerical embroidery business for several years.

SOURCE: Brother 770-PE I have Amazing Design software and

well, from what is indicated in the USB manual for your Brother, check that none of the below issues is causing this.
- Ensure that USB media contains data for no more than 200 embroidery patterns since Embroidery patterns cannot be transferred to the machine if the USB media contains data for more than 200 embroidery patterns. If this is the case, reduce the number of designs saved on the USB media.

- if the embroidery designs contain too many colors (this number may vary within the designs themselves), it may not be possible to transfer an embroidery pattern to the machine, even if there are less than 200 embroidery patterns that have been saved on the USB media. In this case also, reduce the number of designs saved on the USB media.
- Save the patterns in the root directory of the USB media. If embroidery data is saved in a folder on USB media, that embroidery data cannot be retrieved by the machine.

Do you know if there is a safety switch in the power supply unit of the PE-770 Brother Embroidery Machine?

THe noise that you heard was the fuse or a capacitor. Since this machine has an lcd display, it is most likely damaged to the point that it would be cheaper to replace it.

I need to rotate my pattern by 45 degrees on my brother pe 770. I've tried going to layout but it only does 180. Any ideas?

Get software such as Embird Design to do it and then export the .PES file and transfer to the machine. Unfortunately the low end machines do not have this capability.

Connecting to a computer

Are you asking how to connect the Brother PE-400D sewing machine?  You have "how to connect the '4000D' to a computer and what risk if any".  Which machine are you asking about - these are two different sewing machines.  If you are inquiring about the Brother PE 400-D, then your answer is... this machine is NOT capable of being connected to a computer.  However, if you wish to purchase or download embroidery designs from the internet, you may look into purchasing the Brother PE Basic. This allows you to download embroidery designs from the internet to your computer hard drive and then load them on to a Brother memory card.  The Brother memory card can then be slipped into the proper slot for the memory card on the sewing machine.  You will need to purchase embroider designs that are in the PES format for you Brother machine to read it.  Hope this helps!
