My Whirlpool Duet Sport washer wll not drain. It gives an F-21 error message. I checked the back drainage hose and it seems clear. I believe I hear something rattling within machine - perhaps kids hair pins somehow got stuck. Looking for help on how to open up machine to try to unclog it myself.
Perfect! Yes, they aer 1/4" 6pt screws. I didn't have to lift my washer, but the previous tech had put in 1 screw crooked, so that was FUN! I had cut out an opening on an old cracked tote and was able to hold all the water as long as I transferred some to a bunch of tupperware. Make sure you line up the upper mark on the white drain plug before putting back in. The tote was getting overloaded and I didn't notice the alignment marks until after having some water overflow. Just a heads-up if anyone has an emergency and HAS to get the plug back in in a hurry.
I found:
Wife's Victoria's Secret panties
2 dimes
4 pennies
some legos
a metal nut
pencil eraser
wall anchor
some legos
Super easy to fix, and thanks for the info on the 1/4" screws (since I had to go buy a screw nut driver). In my case it was a rubber band (probably left in some pocket, grrr) caught in the spinner to the right of the filter, which I could remove with my fingers without needing to disassemble further. One quick tip that worked for me to deal with the water: grab a 1 gallon ziplock bag and hold it tight around the filter while you unscrew the cap slowly with the other hand (easy to see the cap since the bag is clear), let it fill about 3/4 of the way, then close the cap to stop the flow and empty the bag in your sink. Much easier for me than garbage bags, since it's a sturdier bag and not as heavy. I did this 4-5 times until no more water came out and I had very little water spillage...still put a towel on the floor to catch any errant spills.
I too have made this repair and found the pump strainer to have junk in it. Sure seems like it would be nice if the machine was designed where the pump filter basket could be cleaned out from outside the unit. I went 10 years without even knowing it had a filter-- until it got clogged and had to troubleshoot. : )

Just had the exact same problem. Front panel screws hard to get at, (unit stacked) but used univeral on ratchet. Wow, how easy compared to our old stacking GE unit. Word of advice, unscrew the drain plug slowly. We had a LOT of water, and used a heavy duty garbage bag held around the drain to "catch" the water. Worked great-no wet towel mess. Thanks
found $2.00 in change a bra strap and wire, fixed the problem, I used a shop vac for the water.
Very easy to do, but kinda smelly and gross. We didn't have much water - but here is what we did have:
2 - Baby socks
6 - Nickels
10 -Pennies
5 - Dimes
1 - Quarter
3 - Marbles
5 - Rocks
5 - Buttons
1 - Safety Pin
1 - Nut
1 - Washer
Several tags and other unidentifiable linty nastyness
I worked I did it myself and it worked It was really smelly I contained the water and It is fixed. There's two hundred bucks in my pocket cha ching. Thanks for the help!!!! :-)
I thank God for Google!! Saved us some money today. My husband didn't like to fact we had to take down the stackable but oh well. My washer is working. Yea! and thank you for everyone's input on this thread.
Thank you so much! The plastic bag was a good idea. You weren't lying when you said there would be ALOT of water. All fixed now! =)

My washer had this same problem and error message. After removing the front panel, draining the water, cleaning out the filter, replacing everything and running a test load, it still failed to drain. So I took everything apart again and checked the pump motor (just to the right of the filter, it twists off). The motor had a small sock tangled in it. Now the washer is working perfectly. Thanks to those of you who offered help!
Disconnect the AC plug
Remove the bottom front access panel (3 screws on bottom front lip)
there you will see the filter access , have rags ready for extra water ,check the pump impellers that they freely move.
F21, this was a big problem for us as well. Started with an "SD error" which indicates that it is taking 4 mins to drain water from the washer, after that when it takes up to 8mins the F21 error occurs.
The instructions to fix this were great and did the trick, would add a few suggestions:
1) Removing the front panel just under the washer door can be tricky, it is secured underneath by 3 1/4" hex screws, you may need a special hex driver or ratchet to remove (can get at home Depot for $4)
2) Make sure you check the tubing from the drum and out to the drain they can be clogged to
3) Twist open drain filter slowly, water will come out so put a heavy duty garbage bag underneath to catch water
4) When replacing filter make sure to line up notch at the top of filter with the groove inside and then slowly screw clockwise back in until tight
5)Make sure to replace front cover tightly, there is a drip fuse that won't let the washer run unless front cover is back on.
Socks are the most common I thing I found.
All took about 10 mins. Good luck
i can not say thank you enough for posting this.... we have been having off and on problems with this for over 3 months and finally the washer gave up... now i know to check the filter that i didn't know was there
THIS SHOULD BE THE #1 TOP RATED ANSWER! I looked up my problem on google, scrolled down & just happened to choose this site, i then scrolled down through the problems & answers & found this had the most info on exactly what to do to attempt to fix the issue. I followed the directions given exactly, put the washer back together (your right all of 10 mins at most), plugged it back in, turned water supplies back on, tested & IT'S WORKING so far no error codes. Yes, most people are right, MAJOR THING I FOUND WAS A WADED UP SOCK, 3 DIMES, 2 PENNIES, A NICKLE, EARRING, BRACELET BEADS, SCREWS, A PIECE OF WOOD, A STRAW & A TOOTHPICK.....A regular check of that drain would really help keep things running smooth, not to mention.......IF PEOPLE WOULD JUST CHECK THEIR POCKETS THOROUGHLY & INSIDE THE RUBBER AROUND THE FRONT THAT SEALS IT. My ultimate question of MAJOR CURIOSITY IS......,,HOW THE HECK DID A SOCK GET THROUGH???? Thanks so much for your tip of experience with this issue

When you take off the drain plug have a shop vac there and open slowly while sucking the water there is very little water leak that way really no mess
I had the same F-21 error and thanks to others who have posted, I was able to solve the problem. F-21 is the code Whirlpool uses to signify that the machine has tried to empty the drum unsuccessfully for four minutes. This is telling you either the hose that drains to the wall is blocked or the filter for the pump is blocked. If your hose is kinked, you have solved the problem. If it is not, then you have to clean the filter. To do this, do just as the others have recommended...
1) Unplug the machine.
2) Remove the front panel(my duet had 3 1/4" sheet metal screws on the bottom of the panel.)
3) Unscrew the white cap you see next to the small little pump.(note, any water in the machine will flood out. Have about 20 towels or better yet...a wet/dry shop vac. Someone else suggested this and it worked great. Once you turn that white cap a revolution or two, water will come out slowly. You can use the shop vac to **** it up before it hits the floor)
4) Pull out the cap completely and look at your new treasure. Mine consisted of the following: Two collar stays, one small plastic jewel from a shirt, two pieces of orange plastic of unknown origin and the big prize...one slimey sock.
5) Carefully replace the white cap being sure not to cross thread the connection.
6) Replace the front cover(this was the hardest part, those small screws are a pain to work with)
7) Plug it back in and fire it up!!!
Good luck and thank you to all who have posted...you saved me well over $100 I am sure!!!
Nothing was in the filter. I replaced the pump and I still get a f21 error code. I checked the drain hose and it was not clogged. Checked the front of the washer drum and that was clean as well. When I was replacing the pump assembly I check as far as I could in the black drain under the washer drum ans that was empty as well. My next guess is that there is something under the washer drum (?) or .....? any suggestions are most welcome

Regarding the F02 Error on the Front End Whirlpool Duet, I was able to resolve the problem with the instructions from here, just want to stress cleaning out the filter by removing the front panel. Very easy and the error code is now gone. (screws are underneath front panel at bottom, remove stacker drawer for easy access, remove screws, pull panel off, remove the filter cap, turn to the left and pull out—that's where you will locate the clog. Thank you so much! I had called whirlpool and Sears and neither source was helpful, they suggested using a local technician. THIS FIX TOOK 10 Minutes. DO IT!
1) take (3) screws off front lower panel, remove panel.
2) unscrew ground wire off on right side and pop out the plastic crossbar by reaching behind and squeezing 2, one on each side, clamps together to get out of way. (can get to parts much easier by doing this) also disconnect (3) rubber boots from bottom of filter from the machine. Note: the front one pull up and toward you. the back two you have to work a little (not hard at all)
3) get 2-4 gallon bucket (I used an old kitty litter bucket, worked fine) set close to washer under filter.
4) put wash rag under filter (this will catch excess water) and remove white hose. (an adjustable pair of pliers works great) quickly turn filter unit to the right and pull a little toward you over the edge so the water coming out can go directly into the bucket. YOU WILL GET WATER" Note: if the sound and/or sight of running water makes you have to use the restroom, it would be a great time to go before step 4. Note: be careful not to disconnect and/or pull apart the 2 black wires on the filter.
5) after water drains disconnect black hose. (an adjustable pair of pliers works the best.
6) disconnect (3) screws and pull apart filter.
7) take trash out of inside of filter and go to sink to rinse and clean.
8) put filter back together and tighten (3) screws. Note: make sure the grooves line up (they are in a shape of an hourglass) if you look careful enough you can see what holes the screws were in before.
9)set filter inside of washer and hook black hose back up. Note: if you take the clamp and push it all the way to the back and position the squeezers at the top. you can hold the hose on with one hand and are able to get adjustable pliers in to squeezers easier.
10) hook up white hose (much easier than black)
11) slide and pop the (3) rubber boots back into position.
12) pop clamps back in place for crossbar and reconnect the ground wire.
13) replace front lower panel and replace (3) screws
congratulations you are finished. when I did this I became $0.11 richer and I found my grandsons missing sock. approx. time 20-30 min.
I had the F-21 error message come up also. I tilted the machine back and propped it up with (4) 2X4's. Using a ratchet, I took off the three bolts on the bottom front panel. The drain is located on the right front of the machine. I loostened the big round filter access port and caught the water in a heavy duty trask bag (which I emptied three times). I found 2 quarters, 2 dimes, 2 pennies and a button. I stuck my finger into the pump motor and found a micro fiber lens cleaning cloth stuck in the impeller. I removed sais items and put the machine back together, and it now runs fine!
Since doing this, I have gained hero status here in the home front! It was very easy and I recommend doing it yourself instead of calling a service repair person. If you know how to use a screwdriver, you can do it!
We also cleared our drain, bunch of change and 2 pencils, however it still wouldn't work! So we took the gray drain hose, and plugged it into the faucet; back-filled the washer up with water till it went into the tub. Then we unplugged hose from faucet and let it drain into sink by turning on power and setting drain/spin mode on. THE WASHER DRAINED!!! So we knew the pump and everything worked. There were no clogs in the hose. But it still wouldn't get out of pump mode and into a cycle---kept showing F21. My wonderful man read a little online about the pressure switch some other guy posted and this was the problem. The PRESSURE SWITCH is at the top of washer, right side, ( you have to remove top of washer). He unplugged the white connector to the switch hoping to reset it and also unplugged the tiny diametered black hose ( could fit only a B-B threw it). He blew his breath (air) into the black hose hoping to remove any blockage and then reattached it to the pressure switch. He also plugged back in the white connector pack and WOOOHOOO!!! The washer worked! FINALLY SUCCESS!!! Thank you so much to my WAYNE! LUV U!!XO
We just fixed this F21 problem. It took us about a half hour and we found over $9.00 in change, about 20 hair pins, candy wrappers, lots of animal hair, and 2 buttons. Take the 3 screws off the bottom front panel, twist off the drain plug (need something to catch the water), and clean the plastic filter. We had lots of stuff in the black tube also.. so we decided to remove it and clean it too. The hardest part of the whole thing was putting the clamp back on the black hose. So, saved lots of money on a house call, spent a bit of time, and made $9.00!
I used to get this F-21 error every time.
Funny I did not find and detailed instructions here on how to fix this. Then I found a manual (https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/6545d78b3f479480852571650061b1ba/$FILE/8178558.pdf).
Followed instructions on page
4-11, # 10 - to open the lower access panel
4-17 # 1 to 4 - to open the filter
It is here I found one shredded cloth, couple of legos and a sketch-pen
GREAT it worked! One additional thing. We did all the above, simple and painless!Be prepared for a bit of water and it might help if you use a pair of rubber gloves. In our case, almost 10.00 in change. Who knew!! So that was the easy part! We still had the error after removing the change. The pressure switch needed to be re-set. Simply remove the washer top. (Easy to do..If you can get to the back of your washer) After you remove the top of the washer you will see the pressure switch on the back right side towards the top. Again, easy to get to. Simply unplug the connection to the pressure switch (it has 2 tabs to depress and slides off the connection) Unplug the small back hose from the pressure switch and blow on the hose to make sure there is not any blockage. connect the hose and re-connect the connections. PRESTO! It works! You can run a diagnostics by setting the selector to "Clean Washer" and hitting the Xtra Rinse button 4 times in five seconds. The Washer will go through a full diagnostic test.
Here is what I've learned from this experience...
1- a $20 "bucket head" shop vac is an incredibly worthwhile purchase! No mess, no fuss. (It fits on top of a 5 gallon bucket - how cool is that?!)
2- When you've cleaned out the filter, checked the pipes and the pump...and put it all back together...PUT THE FRONT COVER BACK ON!!! This may sound incredibly obvious, but I wanted to test the machine to make sure it worked before going through the ordeal of getting those 3 little screws back in, and it didn't! There is a trip switch which doesn't allow the pump to work without the cover.
3- A piece of 2x4 is an indespensible tool! Tilt the machine back and kick the 2x4 under the front of the machine, so you can get to those 3 little screws.
4- My knees really are too old for this!
5- I'm about as proud as punch that I did this by myself! No hubby, no handyman, just me! Yay :-)
6- The internet is a wonderful tool - thank you for everyone who has gone before and posted their experiences.
Hi and thanks,
I've replaced pressure switches about 3 times on advice of a tech, always to temporary avail. THANKS TO EVERYBODY who suggested cleaning the filter. Also thanks for THIS POST WHICH TELLS YOU TO REPLACE THE COVER- THERE IS A TINY BUTTON AT BOTTOM RIGHT WHICH, AS HE SAYS, MAY NEED TO BE DEPRESSED FOR THE PUMP TO WORK- so DO replace the front bottom cover and then test away. Mine is working again after I cleaned out 2 tiny objects from the filter. Apparently the filter's flow is sensed to a tiny degree, shutting out the pump's function as a safeguard. Best of luck to all. The Whirlpool Duet is a great machine. We just need to keep the filter clean.
Before I took off my front cover I pushed PAUSE. It gives a tiny almost inaudible click. Wait a couple of minutes and you can open the door (be ready in case there is lots of water at the height of the bottom of the door with a towel.
I dragged my wet clothes out of the washer into a large stainless steel salad bowl. Then I scooped out the remaining water BEFORE tilting the machine backwards and shoving an old hotplate (unplugged of course) under the washer to hold it back on a tilt. Then I unscrewed the cap. Maybe a pint of water came out since I'd done the steps above to pre-scoop out the bulk of the water after removing the wet clothes.
I hope this helps everybody understand how to fix such a simple problem. Don't be afraid- "YOU CAN DOOO IT!"

Hello,
I too have had the same problem as all of you. It turns out it was a clogged filter. SUPER easy to fix, and Sears wanted $400.00, I did it myself for free. Just unpluged the unit, opened the front bottom panel, and unscrewed the filter, drained the water, cleaned the filter, screwed it back on, replaced the panel, pluged it back in .... and as good as new. Thank you everyone for your input on this site! it truly helped me.
First unplug power, get a big can of peaches or what ever is handy,to push under washer so you can get to the 3 screws on front panel......once I got those off,and did a little prying to remove panel,I found the manual in a plastic pouch on the other side.ok,you will see a good size plug ,have containers under there and ready to catch water.....turn toward your left, its hard at first, but turn slowly, the water will come out, after most of the water has drained keep turning and pull on out,you will be amazed at what you will find!look back in there to see if you see anything else,if you do,just pour some water in the tub ,squeeze black rubber bulb,it will milk the rest on out. good luck, hope this helps
I followed the instructions on removing the 3 little screws. THANK YOU to whomever posted to make sure and have a HEAVY garbage bag ready to catch the water before removing the lid to the filter (I tucked part of the garbage bag edge under the filter to keep the water from going everywhere). Found a handkerchief, 3 pennies and a bead. Reran machine and it worked. THANK YOU ALL!!!! :) Happy Housewife
The problem was clothing caught in the drain. Unplug and turn off hot and cold. If water is in the basin, pull the washer out a bit and tilt back to 45 degrees. Unscrew the three screws holding the bottom cover in place on the front. Once open, the drain plug is on the right and unscrews. This is where the clothing was located for me. I removed it, put the plug back, screwed the cover back on, and started a new cycle.
Just fixed mine today. Took about 5 minutes. One thing I did that I have not seen listed was to put my washer on its back, that way when I undid the drain, there was no mess at all. I am sure that I didn't get ALL of the material that created the blockage, but I am sure that the time I saved in clean up will more than pay for doing this easy process again.
Tilt it on it's back...its the way to go!!!
Thank you!!! I've been struggling FOREVER with this problem. Every repair person tells me to run the clean cycle... After two days of running the cycles - putting Draino in the drains - suctioning the drains... I was losing my mind! I finally got down on my belly and found the filter. I put a brownie pan in front of the drain and had my mini shop vac ready to catch the water... I opened the valve slowly and was able to control the water beautifully. My 5 year old and 9 year old daughters and I managed to fix the problem in minutes - with no mess!!! And yes, we found lots of change, panties, bandaids, rubber bands, erasers - the works... Amazing the machine worked at all.

200263553210 on eBay is a cheap PDF repair manual for that model.

Here is a tip to deal with the water when uncloging the filter. I used it, and it worked great. Before you start the repair, empty the washer of all garments, and clean off the end of the drainage hose. Then Blow backwards through the drain hose. Set the washer to drain cycle, and let it drain until it stops. You may have to do this more than once, but blowing through the drain hose will temporarly unclog the filter, and allow it to drain some of the water. After the drain cycle finishis, complete the repair as listed. I only had about 32 ounces of water come out, not bad at all. I did Find lost of hair, about $3.00 in change, and several air soft pellets. Hope this helps.
I tried all of this and it did not work. I found water and sludge in my pump housing. The seal let this in to the tubular magnet area behind the impeller. So if you pull the motor out you can see that the front of the house will twist to separate from the motor. Then pull the pump impeller out of the plastic housing and you may find water and sand which interferes with the rotation of the magnet. I cleaned, put some lube on the o-ring and now it works perfectly again!
Super easy to fix, and thanks for the info on the 1/4" screws (since I had to go buy a screw nut driver). In my case it was a rubber band (probably left in some pocket, grrr) caught in the spinner to the right of the filter, which I could remove with my fingers without needing to disassemble further.
One quick tip that worked for me to deal with the water: grab a 1 gallon ziplock bag and hold it tight with one hand around the filter while you unscrew the cap slowly with the other hand (easy to see the cap since the bag is clear), let it fill about 3/4 of the way, then close the cap to stop the flow and empty the bag in your sink. I repeated this 4-5 times until no more water came out and I had very little water spillage...Much easier for me than garbage bags, which can tear, and not as heavy. Still put a towel on the floor to catch any errant spills.
Thanks to all who posted on the Whirlpool Duet F-21 problem. It works!. The wife called me at work Thanksgiving eve that washer stopped. Of course no repair folks available until Monday with family wash to do for a weekend. Taking off lower panel is the toughest. I propped up front of washer with books and used channel lock pliers and small crescent wrench to take off screws. I tried to use two Tupperware containers to catch water when filter plug unscrewed but water drains out into bottom of washer and onto floor.. Large trash bag must be best way to go. After towel clean up I found a quarter, gnarled old penny, lint and a few pebbles. Not as much treasure as some have posted but enough to cause hiccup. After replacing plug, (make sure top notch aligned so filter tray is level inside filter) and panel, washer works fine. Happy Thanksgiving!!
Same
problem, F21. Thank you all for the advice. Our tools of choice were a
13" X 15" shallow pan (cookie sheet) slid under front of the washer and a wet/dry vacuum (shop vac).
We vacuumed out the water on the inside of the drum, then we loosened the
filter slowly (about a quarter turn or less) and vacuumed the water as it came
out, excess drips went in to the cookie sheet. After the water quit
flowing, we unscrewed the filter the rest of the way and pulled it out. We found coins,
screws, bobby pins and a woman's knee high hose lodged in the inlet to the pump
and it must have stopping the pump from working. We put a light film of
petroleum jelly on the rubber gasket of the filter and screwed in back on, all is well,
thanks again.
Great solution. One additional suggestion: For our machine, the 3 screws were not 1/4 inch but, rather, metric 7MM. A 1/4 inch socket wrench was too small and a 5/16 wrench too large. Only with a metric 7MM wrench could I get them off.
The error on my machine was F-- and no number. It was, however, getting stopped on alternate cycles with an SD error. Once I got here, I thought what the heck. I tried it and it worked!!!
1) The screws for the panel are the three that run parallel to the floor.
2) Our machine doesn't have a pedestal, so we had to tilt it back to get the screws out. This makes it a two person job.
3) It was really hard to turn the drain valve to the left to get it open. In part, because we couldn't get the proper leverage as it was so close to the floor.
4) The garbage bag solution was brilliant. Just empty the water out of the bag and you're done with no other clean up.
5) Found a lot of dog hair, pencil, broken plastic toy and some change.
6) We also discovered that the funky, musty smell in our basement from time to time was actually the washer. The sitting water in the drain combined with the dog hair was the culprit.
Thanks for saving my Sunday, and my week ahead, by helping me get to seven loads of laundry.
Save yourself money . . .follow the instructions to remove the front panel screws with a ratchet, and unscrew the drain plug . . have a bucket or two ready . . .A LOT of whater will come out, as well as whatever is clogging the drain. . . in our case, 4 quaters, 10 pennies, a hair clip, a pen, a stocking, several air soft gun pellets, wads of fuzz, a green unidentified object (looked like wax that you use when you swim so you don't get water in your ear) the tag to something from pacsun, and a bullet .. . if i hadn't have seen it myself i wouldn't have believed all that stuff could get stuck in there . . .cleaned it out, and save at least 100 bucks . . b/c the instruction manual basically says if you check the drain hose and it's clear, and you still keep getting the F21 error, call a repair man . . .did the whole job in 15 minutes
same song and dance as everyone else wife complained of a f21 error decided to google it before i called a repair guy saw this and within 15min i had a garbage bag full of smelly water, 3 pennies 4 hairpins and tons of smelly lint thanks a ton hopefully that will keep it running well for a while!!!

I have a Whirlpool Duet and the washed load would stop and give me a F-21 error. I tipped the washer back a little and removed the three screws on the front bottom cover. There is a large white drain value, turn and open the drain (make sure you have a pan or something to catch the water and any junk inside) to remove the water. Attached to the drain is a black hose with an expanded section, squeeze this to find any loose socks, under clothes etc. I acually found three socks, a battery, a pair of tweezers and a few coins. This F-21 error is a drainage problem, don't call the repair center and pay for a serviceman, it is easy to fix yourself. I hope this helps!!
FYI: The pump cleanout is located on the front of the machine, bottom right corner. There are only three screws holding the bottom cover on. It is easy to get to if you prop it up a few inches off the ground. Just thought this would be helpful as I just did this as of 5 min ago. Should take 10 min. or less.
Check the pump cean out on the frount of the pump unscrew the plug, be prepaired for some water and also unplug the washer before starting
We received the same code of s5 and it not spinning out. We took the front cover on the bottom off and cleaned the drain. We found 2 small barrets, bobbi pin, part to a door, a 22 bullet, a bit, 40 coins and my thong panties! With a lot of lint and hair. UGH! We will be cleaning that more regularly! THANK!
Hey The solution worked. Take off the front cover on the bottom, then there is a drain clean out. Make sure you have towells, as water will drain out. Removed lint and items, I had a nail, bobbypin and lint that clogged the drain. Once removed, worked fine!
Woodland Gal.
Thanks for all the advice. I checked my lint filter and and found: approx 75 coins (no kidding), bobby pin, 3 marbles, 4 airsoft BBs, 1 small nail, 1 childs ring, a few pieces of gravel and other misc items all bound tightly together in lint and silt. I can't believe the unit was washing at all. Looks my problem is solved.
I have the Whirlpool HE 5T and it has been giving me the F21 code for about a week. I took the back off and removed the Black drain hose from the bottom of the washer. I found a pair of panties stuck in there that was not allowing the washer to drain. If you are having the same problem it might be worth it to take a look.
Tony
The F-21 means slow drain. There is a filter in the front of the machine, you have to remove the bottom front piece to get to it. The screws are on the bottom. You then will have to open the filter. It is a white tube. Mine was pretty tight. Be prepared for water to pour out. I have had to empty mine twice in the 2 years I have had it. Hope this helps.
F 21 means slow drain remove lower kick plate couples screws at bottom//you will see the drain pump there is a clean out at the front of pump/ turn that out counter clock wise that is a coin collector but many other objects get in it to/ remove items and reverse to put unit back together....
If I helped you please vote If you need more help please ask good luck
Solutions listed worked for me. Simply take off the three hex head screws from the bottom front panel of the machine, unscrew the drain, and remove whatever is blocking the flow of water. Don't forget to turn off power first and have a plastic bag ready to catch water. Parent of all teenage boys beware, our culprit was airsoft pellets which wedge perfectly into the drain holes. This is a VERY EASY repair.
We had the same problem! Unscrewed the front cover, drained A LOT of H2O into a big bucket and cleaned out much lint and random metal things. It works great! Best of all I got to call my husband at work and tell him I fixed the washer. WE don't have to [pay anyone to fix it. Thanks!!!
First check your washer plug to see if the connections are tightly
screwed. Next check your filter if you haven't for long.
Remove
the 3 screws at the bottom of the front panel under the
washer door. Your filter door will be light brown. If you find a hose
there it is to drain out excess water (water that could not be drained
by your pump) After you hv drained unscrew the cap and
remove all the junk inside. Have a large plastic bag to catch junk and
water. Refit carefully after cleaning out. If not solved, something
shd be blocking your pump, check this out. Door locked? Press "end of cycle" for 3 seconds, wait for 2 minutes & try the door. F-21 filter blocked.
How abt a nice rating
for the free help? Thnks
Thanks for the tips on here. I am not mechanically inclined at all but with all the great info here, I was able to clear ours out - final tally 13 coins, 2 little girls socks, and eyeglass cleaning cloth, a doll's bib, and some miscellaneous junk - unreal!!! Hex nuts on the front of the machine are 1/4" to get the lower panel off. This info helped too - there's a link down a bit for a repair manual for older models that was helpful.
F-21 is a code that indicates "long drain".Check the drain line for kinks or obstructions. Check the pump. Check eletrical connections at the pump. Remove the hoses from the pump and use a flashlight to look into the suction port. Look for anything clogging the pump (like the occasional stray sock) and check the pump impeller. Make sure there are no broken/missing blades and that the impeller will spin freely. If any blades are broken/missing or if you cannot get the impeller to spin freely, the pump is defective. Hopefully it's just a clogged pump, drain line, or a jammed impeller. Hope this helped and best wishes.
I work on these machines, make sure you are using the recommended HE detergent, they say 2 tbls or 1/4 cup is what you need. HE stands for high efficiency and it doesnt sud up as much as the regular detergent. Alot of the time when you have too much suds in the washer that error code will appear its very common, see if that helps.
Thanks for the info. Our washer displayed the same F21 error code. Unplugged the washer; unscrewed the 3 - 1/4in machine screws with a deep 1/4in socket; removed the bottom panel; unscrewed the white plug from the sump (thanks for the tip on catching the water). Found 2 socks, coins, paper clip, and a button. Now I know where those missing socks went.

I solved my F21 problem above, figured I'd follow up in case it helps someone else.
After paying a guy $120 to come out and do nothing for an hour, I took a guess and figured the water pressure level switch was not working, which would explain why the machine thought it still had water when it didn't.
Sure enough, I took the switch out, looked it over and realized it was mechanical switches tripped by air pressure, blew a few times into the nozzle where the hose connects, reinstalled it, and it worked. When I blew, I heard a "click" telling me I was flipping the mechanic switch inside.
FYI the part is here:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/frame_partlist.aspx?part_id=3128700&&model_id=5136839&diagram_id=1307753
And the nozzle I blew into is facing right in the photos.
I performed this "fix" long ago and the problem has never reappeared (knock on wood).
Good luck!!
This means your drain pump is clogged--- there are 3 screws at the bottom of the lower front panel. Remove these screws and there is a drain pump cleanout located in the middle. Twist this off by hand can clean out the debris--- WATCH OUT LOTS OF WATER will come out so have towels ready.
Yep - drain the hose and it works fine!
Thanks for the posts everyone. Our washer exhibited the error code 21. I cleaned the washer trap and thought great this is fixed. Started the washer and then got the error code 5sd. Hmmm, wife had added more detergent ( HE of course ). Unplugged washer for a few minutes, tried rinse cycle and nothing! Just error code 5sd.
Back to square one. When I reopened the trap I tried spinning the impeller on the the drain pump attached to the trap. Though it turned it did so reluctantly. Managed to get one finger inside impeller housing and felt a bobby pin stuck between the side of the impeller and the impeller housing. Removed pump ( that was fun ) gave it a good shake and out popped the friggin bobby pin.
Put everything back together and now I\'m running the rinse and spin cycle to get rid of any excess detergent. She\'s back up and running!
So please double check the free movement of the impeller when you\'ve got the trap out. It may save you this added aggravation.
Thanks Again to everyone who posted their solutions.
Please check this video on abut f 21 error code and how to rectify it.
"F21" (AKA SD) is a Long (SLOW) Drain error (LD). If the drain time exceeds 8 minutes this error code will be displayed. In addition, a "SUDS" error may also be displayed. This may be an indication of a drain pump problem and/or clog in the drain line. You will need to check the following:
1.First, attempt to unplug the washer for at LEAST 30 minutes to reset the Central Control Unit (CCU). Sometimes this is all that is required to correct momentary glitches with the unit. If the error code returns, proceed to step 2.
2.Check the drain hose to make sure it is not kinked or clogged.
3.Check the electrical connections to the pump and ensure the pump is running.
4.Remove the drain pump filter and check for foreign objects and/or debris.
To check the drain pump...
If you experience a problem where the washer does not drain properly or the drain pump makes excessive noise, here's the information you need to check the drain pump:
Symptom: PUMP IS RUNNING, BUT NOT DRAINING PROPERLY.
1. Unplug the washer while servicing inside the unit.
2. Remove the lower kick panel under the door by removing the three 7mm screws under the bottom edge of the panel. HINT: Use a couple of blocks of wood to prop up the front feet of the washer to gain better access to the screws. Once the screws are removed the panel should drop down, and then pull off. If the panel becomes stuck, a slight tap on either side will dislodge it.
3. Locate the drain pump. It will be located directly under the wash tub (it is the only pump this washer has).
4. There is an access removal cover on the pump that can be removed to clean out the trap. BEFORE doing this, it is strongly recommended that you remove all residual water from the wash tub & drain line or you will have about a gallon or so inside your washer and on the floor to clean up.
5. Here's a helpful way of quickly removing the residual water. If you own a wet/dry shop vac, remove the drain hose from the standpipe at the wall and pull a vacuum with the shop vac. This will empty the wash tub, pump and drain lines. If you don't own a shop vac, grab a bunch of old towels and open the access on the pump slowly so that it comes out at a trickle. Allow the towels to soak up the majority of the water. Close the access and stop the water if you need to get additional towels.
6. Open the pump access and remove once you have all the water drained. Check the drain pump for foreign objects and debris. Check the pump impeller and make sure there's nothing caught in it. Items as small as toothpicks or cotton swabs have been known to stop this pump from working.
7. Clean out the pump thoroughly and reinstall the access cover. Make sure the cover is snug, but do not over tighten.
8. Place the drain hose back in the standpipe (IMPORTANT - DO NOT FORGET!).
9. With the bottom panel still off, plug the washer back in and select the following on the operator console - DRAIN SPIN, NO SPIN, and then press any button under OPTIONS 4 times (it must be the same button). "C00" will show on the console display as the washer begins diagnostics mode.
10. Check the drain pump for leaks as the washer fills. The pump is gravity filled and will hold water even it is not pumping. Allow washer to run through diagnostics until it begins the wash tub tumble cycle.
11. At this point, you can stop the diagnostics procedure by pressing PAUSE/CANCEL 2 times. The drain pump energizes and the washer will begin to drain.
12. If the drain pump works normal and there are no leaks detected, reinstall the bottom panel and tighten screws.
NOTE: It is normal to have residual water left inside the wash tub under the wash basket. This is why it is important to leave the door ajar when not in use so this water does not become sour.

My Duet Sport flashed the F21 code and I followed the above directions...same thing, I found about 55 cents in change, a bunch of lint, and a button, and saved $125 by not having to have a repairman come out!!
F21 According to Whirlpool:
"This error code indicates that drain times are longer than expected.
Is the drain hose kinked or clogged?
Make sure the drain hose is not kinked or clogged. Straighten the hose for adequate water flow. Remove any blockage from the drain hose, drainpipe or utility sink. Use the U-shaped drain hose form on the drain hose, and secure the drain hose. See the Installation Instructions for details; find them by entering your model number in the search tool below."
Also
"Are you using HE High Efficiency detergent?
Use only HE High Efficiency detergent. Using non-HE detergent, or more than the manufacturer's recommended amount of detergent, can cause excessive suds. The excess suds will slow or stop the removal of water from the washer.
Concentrated detergents labeled 2x and higher will require a small amount of detergent based on load size. Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations."

3 screws on bottom front of the machice. These screws hold on the bottom cover. Once cover is removed the cleanout is apparent. Should take 10 min or less.
I had the same problem, error F-21. Unplugged from electric, removed the 3 screws from the bottom front cover, and slid the cover off. Use a large pan or a bucket and some towels to catch all the water....unscrew the white plug and catch the water with the pan or bucket....there will be quite a bit of water! Found a fabric softener, a bunch of lint, and a couple of coins in there. Something that I thought was kind of funny....when you take the bottom front cover off, there is a SERVICE MANUAL in a bag attached to the backside of the bottom cover which explains what all of the error codes mean.
Replace the contol board

Thanks all for information. Had the F-21 error code and it turned out to be ice in the filter. We had just moved the washer back inside out of storage...
took off front panel, opened drain, and sure enough found ice blocking the drain pump.
Remove and clean your drain pump.
Check the pump motor impellers.
If you have water in there, have a shop vac close by.

We had the exact same problem, washer was taking a long time to drain, loud not quite grinding, but definatly a motor working overtime, and then finally the F21 codes. I followed the directions given here, and now we are up and running again! The middle bolt was tough to get off, as well as getting the drain open (white knob on the right, we used a towel and pliers). Then the water came flowing out onto the floor,(I suggest lots of towels on standby, depending on how much water is still in your machine) along with the culprits to the clog, a sock, hairclip, and dog hair. It is totally satisfying to know I just saved a bundle from not having to call in a pro, and I DID IT MYSELF!!! There will be much braging at work tomorrow in my nice clean clothes!
Thanks for the instructions
I have the same problem, filter was clogged. When I cleaned aeverything out and put it all back together, it stills tries to drain and gives me the f-21 error even though there is no water in the machine. every cycle is the same, first it tries to drain, then the f-21...any ideas??
I dont see the directions here at all...could some one post a link? Or repost it...
I also HAD the same F-21 error code. Our machine would not drain and the pump sounded like it was running dry. I followed the directions listed here. I unplugged the machine, removed the front panel which incidentally had a "diagnostic guide" taped to it. The guide is labeled "for service technicians only".
After removing the front panel I unscrewed the drain plug and as predicted a gush of water came out. I had lots of towels on hand. I cleaned the filter of lint, a rosary and about six coins and put it back together. Problem solved. Thanks for the help.
directions worked like charm....removed the three screws and 1 sock, 73 cents, one huge lint ball, 2 necklaces and twelve bobby pins later, we're back in business. Also, they are right about the gusher of water...get a bucket.
will not drain, checked the hose(it's ok)how d I remove the drain plug and where is it?
ok, followed all the instructions here and I am offering up a little more. if you tip the washer up and put something about 6 in high under the feet it is easier to open the panel which has 1/4 6pt head screws in it so you need a rachet, extention and 1/4 in socket to get it off then it just slides down. the lint filter is just twist off but make sure when you put it back on it doesnt get cross threaded. taking apart yeilded me about $3 in change a necklace 2 buttons and a lint ball the size of a hampster:)
thanks for all the help everyone hope this helps someone
cleaned filter got lots of coins and bobby pins but, rattling still goes on and still not draining, btw i looked it over how do you get a pair of underwear stuck in there, you sir are talented.......
any suggestions? pump grinding, no draining, cleared out everything.
Directions were awesome. Found two quarters, a monster hairball, and a glove thats dissappearance we'd been blaming on the dryer for months. Thank you!
Thanks andiescandie for the 6in lift info. it allowed me to fix the problem all by my lil o self. Â Now im off to wash land.
Thank you all for your help. I was able to get the panel off and fix the problem, but not cannot get the front panel back on now . there is something sticking out now so I cannot get this to go back to be screwed on.
Help.
I need help putting the front panel back on. It came off fine, now there is something sticking out so the panel will not go back far enough to screw on. Thanks
My whirlpool duet sport washer seem,s to run fine but when it hits the drain cycle it will not drain and flashes F21
my washer will not drain
My Whirlpool Duet Sport washer wll not drain. It gives an F-21 error message. I checked the back drainage hose and it seems clear. Looking for help on how to open up machine to try to unclog it myself.
My washer will not drain. I recve an F-21 error. Please help!!
Whirlpool Duet: Front load washer.
F22 code : it wont drain.
Can you send me the instructions to unclog the filter?
Thanks,
where is the filter located? How can i get to it?
i also had the same problem! Been dealing with this prb for weeks and thanks to this blog, my washer is working perfectly again! Thank you so much! I am back to loving my washing machine! Would like to add, what a horrible place to put the troubleshooting packet! Thanks again!
Washer will not drain. F21 error.
Whilrpool Duet washing machine. Mine stops the cycle at 26 minutes and flashes F-2 error code. I can get it going again if I push "cancel" and then "start". Often though, it stops the cycle again. Many trips to the basement for a load of laundry. It is also not spun enough leaving laundry too met. In addition, moldly smell from the machine and with the first load a sewer smell. I have researched this and the mold and sewer smells are not uncommon for this machine. Please help identify the F-2 for me and what to do about it.
After washing a rug with rubber backing my Whirlpool Duet washer will
not drain. The SUD error message also appeared in the
window. I need to fix it right away as I am moving and the washer
is too heavy to lift. How do you take it apart and clean out the
filter etc? Thanks for your help.
Thanks everyone - this is what was wrong with mine too - it took me longer to paw through hubby's tool chest finding the right socket size than it did to actually clean it out! Can't thank you all enough!!
will not drain
Have the same problem with F error and not draining...How do I get the front panel off to check this out
washer will not drain
me too
Yup! Â I had the same freaking problem but I followed the directions and voila!
I found 2 house keys, jewelry, plenty of change and some Legos!
Do yourself a favor and have plenty of towels and a wet vac handy. I spent more time cleaning up the watery mess than I did fixing the problem.Â
I have the same problem but I do not know how to fix it ....which screws to remove and checke where for the filter, etc. Please help.
Washer Model = WFW8500SR01
my washer keeps showing error code F-28. First it was showing F-21, we cleared the drain now this. What should I do. It shuts off 2 minutes into the wash and displays F-28.
F 21 I waited a week and thought my wife was going to make me move out. I check the manual and it said it was a drainage problem. I was messing around with the drain pipe and was about to remove the back panel when a little bird told me to google Whirlpool Duet Sport F 21 and baboom. Easy as pie.
Unplug the machine and remove the three screws under the front bottom panel. Slowly unscrew the white (approx 2.5") plastic filter (on the right side). Have a thick garbage bag handy to catch the water and get ready for a bit of a stench. Approx 2 gallons of liquid comes out. Pull the plastic filter out, shake it in the garbage (make sure there is no jewelry in it), wash it, put it back. start the washer, show the wife and take her upstairs and have a good ole time
Just wanted to say thanks have been fighting with my machine for awhile. I also called it all types of names. Did what was said here and had a lot of hair come out. Just running it now but sure it will work.
Whirlpool should let customers know about this problem and the easy solution.
Thanks everyone
Same problem, followed the directions and easily fixed it! Yea, go girl power!
Ran a load of laundry got error code F21. I googled the problem and followed the instructions. Removed 3 screws from front panel, put notched-out bucked under the white tubed filter, loosened filter, let water pour out (had 4 gallons of water), clean out filter. Found stubby pencil, lint and hair. Looked at the motor assembly on the right side next to the filter; nothing there. Reassembled both; make sure to line up notches on the white filter. Reassembled panel, plugged in and reran load of laundry. All set! Thank you to all who had simple instructions (wouldn't be able to get a technician out here until after the Memorial Day holiday. It would stink not being able to do my own laundry for 3 days!
I have a Whirlpool Duet Tumblefresh 4.4 washer. I CONSTANTLY have the F21 error code! I can't tell you how many times I have removed the front panel to clean the filter, often to find only minimal lint inside...not enough to clog anything. I always clean the drain area inside the door after every load. I still always get the error code. If I ever load more than 4 pairs of jeans (I'm only average sized) or about 4 or 5 towels the machine will read the error code! This is no matter if I run it on the normal cycle or the bulky cycle...the machine is even whimpier if run on the normal cycle. I think that the machine cannot handle any laundry with wet weight to it. Can anyone tell me what's the problem with my washer or do I just have a lemon???????? Help!
I got the same problem. I did all the steps which is drain out the water and clean out the "Filter" which was the basket looking thing attached to the white knob. My washing machine works again but when it comes to draining water it has the error again! help?
I got the same problem. I did all the steps which is drain out the water and clean out the "Filter" which was the basket looking thing attached to the white knob. My washing machine works again but when it comes to draining water it has the error again! help?
Thanks to everyone. Of course, my husband was out of town when I got the F-21 error code. After looking here, I thought I could fix it myself. It really wasn't difficult. My only suggestion, is to use 2 buckets. After unscrewing the drain, I was readly with my 2 1/2 gallon bucket. It quickly filled, with water still pouring out. So just be ready. I found 3 color catcher sheets, 65 cents and a tie chain.
We have been having loud, overworking sounds and a code of F 21 for a few weeks and could not figure out what was wrong. There was no code F 21 in the instruction manual :( Called a repair man and got an estimate of "Somewhere in the ballpark of $250 to $300 to come out and fix it." SO I looked it up and with this site fixed it myself in about 10-15 mins with no issues!! Used a bag to catch the water and gunk. We had 4 childrens socks and 41 cents jammed up in there. Now it works like new and didnt cost me a dime....in fact I found a few LOL. WOW Gotta love it!!!
Thanks guys for all of the input on this subject. I was getting the F-21 code as well. Imanaged to unplug the washer and restart it in the DRAIN/SPIN cycle a few times to get all of the water out. I followed the instructions to check the filter and sure enough there was a sock and some change. Cleaned it out, put it back together and I'm error free. How much would this have cost during the pre-internet days? Thanks again
Just as with everyone else, had the F21 error on my front-load Whirlpool Washer. Unscrew the 3 machine screws on the very bottom of the front of the washer, and removed the cover. Slowly unscrew the white cap in the center of the exposed area (mine was about 3 inches in diameter). Water will come rushing out (we just used a bunch of towels). Found a few coins, a small plastic toy... but had to reach back into the black rubber hose and remove one of my kids' socks to truly unclog the drain. Reassembled, and we're back in business. Thanks to all for posting!!
Did it! EXTRA piece of advice - while everything is open, also give a gentlle sweep out of the opening on the right hand side that leads into the pump motor. I ended up having to use a pair of needle nosed pliers to pull out a bobby pin with a ball of lint wrapped around it that was made it past the filter and was jamming the pump. Unfortunately, I didn't think to check there until AFTER I put everything back together and ran a test rinse cycle (only to get the dreaded F-21 again because the pump was still clogged!) Hopefully that can save someone a little time and frustration! And for the record, besides the bobby pin, there was also a hair clip, beads, two clothing tags, and $1.32 in change :)
