My TI-83 plus calculator doesn't t work, i thought at first that the battery was low but when i put new rayovac batteries in the screen remained blank. What do i do?
As battery gets drained, the screen contrast dims. But when you change batteries, some times the contrast is reset to some low value and the screen appears dead: it is so light that you do not see anything, and you think the calculator is malfunctioning. This is the most frequent reason users think the calculator refuses to turn ON. And I hope that is the case now.
To correct that, you must increase screen contrast: draken the screen a bit. To do so
If that solve your problem that is good, rate the post accordingly.. If that does not, do not get irate and berate the post. Post a comment here describing what you did and what message (if any) calculator returned, and I will give you further diagnostic steps.
Here are some steps to perform in the order they are presented. The
point A may solve your problem. If it does not, do the others. Please
read the post till the end.
A Try this before thinking of repairs.
B If that does not workPush the ON button.
Even if you see nothing, press the [2nd] key and release it.
Press and HOLD the UpArrow key until the screen darkens.
You may have to keep pressing UpArrow for a little while before you see anything.
C. Third option Remove one of the AAA batteries.
Press and hold the [CLEAR] key.
While holding [CLEAR], reinsert the AAA battery and then
turn the calculator on.
The calculator should display the message "RAM Cleared".
Release the [CLEAR] key and then press it one more time to remove the message "RAM Cleared".
D. Last option Remove batteries including the backup battery for 5minutes.
After the 5 minute period, reinsert all of the batteries and
turn the calculator on.
Adjust the contrast if necessary.
The last option requires the reinstallation of the system. So
to use it you must download the TIConnect 1.6 software from
education.ti.com. You must have the TI USB SilverLink or the TI Black serial cable ready.You must be connected to the Internet.
If the message "Error! Press any key to turn unit off. Then turn unit back on."Remove one of the AAA batteries.
Press and hold the [DEL] key.
While holding [DEL], reinsert the AAA battery and then
turn the calculator on.
The calculator should display "Waiting...Please install calculator software now".
Connect the TI Connectivity cable between the computer and the calculator.
Click on Start >> Programs >> TI Tools >> TI Connect >> TI OS Downloader.
Follow the on-screen directions to reinstall the calculator's OS.

Please be prepared to re-install the calculator's OS if you run through this process.
If you have a straight Ti 83 without the Plus or, Silver Edition label goto (Procedure 2) below. If your Ti calculator is a Ti 83 Plus or better goto (Procedure 1).
(Procedure 1). Try a new set of AAA batteries. Remove one of the AAA batteries. Press and hold the [CLEAR] key. While holding [CLEAR], reinsert the AAA battery and then turn the calculator on. The calculator should display the message "RAM Cleared". Release the [CLEAR] key and, then press [CLEAR] one more time to remove the message. Remove one of the AAA batteries. Press and hold the [DEL] key. While holding [DEL], reinsert the AAA battery and then turn the calculator on. The calculator should display "Waiting...Please install calculator software now". Follow the instructions for the TI-83 family or TI-84 Plus family to reinstall the calculator operating system. Try a new set of AAA batteries. Remove one of the AAA batteries. Press and hold the [ON] key for 20 seconds. Reinsert the AAA battery and then turn the calculator on.

~Connect the TI Connectivity cable between the PC and the calculator.
~Click on Start >> Programs >> TI Tools >> TI Connect >> TI OSDownloader
~Follow the on-screen directions to reinstall the calculator's OS. If you could not install the new OS on your calculator goto step 4.
