E5 and 2,114,0 errors on Canon MP160

I've just bought a second hand MP160,which I only intended to used as a scanner.
I can't get the scanner to operate due to an E5 error on the display, and a 2,114,0 error which appears as a pop-up when I attempt to scan.

Although empty, the cartridges are of the correct type and are seated properly.

When I remove the cartridges completely the error codes do not change.

Is an empty cartridge enough to cause this issue?

Many thanks.

Getting error message 2,114,0 when trying to scan. Also error message E 5 when trying to print. Cartridges are in properly, has been printing and scanning until now, yet no changes I'm aware of.

Having the exact same problem. The window that pops-up says"Printer maintenance in progress. Scan after it is complete. Code 2,114,0".
Alternating "e" and "5" appearing on the yellow LED readout as well.
I'll try reloading the drivers but this is ridiculous!

I got this Error 2,114,0 with my MP210 and none of the above fixes worked. This is how I have got it working again: Press and hold the maintenance (picure of spanner and screw driver) button and the reset button ( Inverted red triangle) together for five seconds or more. The flashing error code 1 and 6 will then stop flashing and replaced by a print copy no 1. The printer/scanner is reset and the scanner works.

Unloading and re-installing the drivers did nothing. Same results after a complete removal and uninstall. I suspect it may have something to do with the Canon call-back program OR the chip feature used in the cartridges after the cartridges have been refilled a certain amount of times.
Canon, Epson, HP and Lexmark ALL use this feature in an effort to deter owners from being able to save money using re-manufactured cartridges that run fine or even better than the factory issued ones.

First, download the software at http://www.box.net/shared/4yblbn34kg

Secondly, to run the software your printer has to be in service mode. Do that by
- unplug cable
- press and hold "power" button
- plug cable
- press "resume" and release
- release the "power" button
At this stage, your computer will detect a new hardware

Run the software.

oke

Steps to troubleshoot the Printer Error Code E5 and E8:
Step1: Place the HP Printer over a durable workbench, possibly in a well-lighted and ventilated area. You will be needed a screw driver, a clean rag and alcohol.
Step2: The main printer cover need to be opened and the smaller inner over.
Step3: Unlock the ink cartridge lever, hold the handle and pull it out.
Step4: Look for the printer roller, unclip from the holder.
Step5: The roller need to be hold and clean with the rag damped with alcohol, allow it to dry. The thorough cleaning is needed to remove dust, accumulated ink and other substances that coat the surface.
Step6: Clip the roller back to the printer holder, correct the reinstallation to produce a distinct click as the roller sets into position.
Step7: Turn the printer sideways and look for the jack at the back, remove the two nuts and pull the jack out.
Step8: Clean the black HP Printer roller inside and all the other parts, then reinstall back the jack using the nuts previously taken out.
Step9: Reinstall the ink cartridge back lock the lever down to hold it securely.
Step10: Close the printer and power up. If the error lights still blink, open-up the scanner cover and look for the drive gears.
Step11: Apply oil on the drive gears and close the scanner.
Step12: Power-up the printer again.
When you have completed the above steps in resolving the error E8 of HP Printer and came across the problem you must get in touch with http://www.canonprintersupportnumbers.com/

Have you tried reloading the driver for the mp160 off canon's website
sometimes that helps the problem

A

I had the same problem when i first refilled my ink cartridges, i kept on removing the ink cartridges and installing them again, it worked for about a month or two, so  first make sure the ink cartridges are placed correctly

Now, i have the same problem again, the easy solution is to replace both ink cartridges, make sure they are canons original ink cartridges.

You can also diagnose which ink cartridge is making the problem by installing one ink cartridge, then read the error message, if both ink cartridges are unrecognized most probably it caused the problem, then try with the other one, if also both arent recognized then it is damaged too, both will need replacement. If one of them is recognized in this procedure then the one recognized is okay.

For me, the colored ink cartridge is making the problem, when both ink cartridges are installed, they arent recognized, when i remove it, the black alone is recognized, i replaced the colored ink cartridges and the printer is operating normally

btw, the problem is in the connectors, they get worn upon usage, or the chip inside the ink cartridge, if the ink is low inside it and you keep on printing the ink will no longer be available to cool the chip and this will burn it, rendering it as unrecognized

hope that helped
Greeting from Jordan

You can download some of the drivers and such from Canon. I installed a used MP160 on a Mac by downloading the scanner driver, printer driver, MP Navigato program, and "on screen manual" (a help file). There are similar downloads for Windows. Unfortunately they don't have the OmniPage SE software for download so you can't do OCR.
