Tub spins while during wash cycle

Have a ge/maytag stackable unit. model# wsm2700dawww. is the tub suppose to rotate in a counter clockwise fashion while the agitator is going back & forth during the wash cycle?? Just replaced the transmission. The repair man that originally diagnosed the bad transmission said that the tub should remain stationary. As far as I remember, the tub has always rotated.

I have a GE washer which the agitator and tub do not spin. I can turn both freely by hand. The belt is in tact. During the cycle, the motor just osillates a minute amount in both the clock and counter...

it might be the safety switch under the door.
it is a switch that will not allow the spin cycle to spin unless the door is closed - like when you look in your washer while its spinning and as soon as you open the door the spinning stops until you shut the door again.
if its damaged it will not allow the spin cycle to work.
try look under the lid.
costs around $3.00 put in with a screw driver good luck

Tub rotates CW during agitation, out of balance, hits side of metal cabinet, but no error code

Hello srcoray,

Did you replace the clutch, just trying to get a feel for your hands on experience with the machine? If you did the work did your machine use the upper roller clutch bearing along with the clutch pulley mounted roller clutch bearing?

The FAV6800AW uses a reversing motor and motor controller that powers the motor and clutch pulley to rotate CW in Wash/Agitate cycle and CCW in Spin Cycle.

In Wash/Agitate cycle the roller clutch bearing should rotate freely CW allowing the agitator shaft to drive the transmission in wash cycle driving the tumblers to rotate only not the wash basket. In spin cycle the roller clutch bearing will lock up (one-way roller clutch bearing) driving the spinner shaft to rotate the wash basket and transmission CCW. Unless my thinking is wrong it sounds like the one way roller clutch bearing is frozen or dragging and not rotating freely in wash cycle rotating the wash basket CW. I’m an owner like you and will try to help.

Just a few other questions;

If you have a load of wet clothes in the wash basket and you select Spin Only cycle will the spin cycle complete with out dc/UC errors?

With the lid raised can you rotate the wash basket CW? It should not; it should only rotate CCW and do that with very little resistance.

GE washer model WHDSR209

On some models, the drive motor is universal meaning the drive turns clockwise in wash mode and turns counter clockwise in spin mode.
Possibly the motor windings is defective for the wash mode and thus the entire drive motor will require replacing.
Hope this helps..

if when in the wash cycle the tub spins then the brake in the cluch assembly is worn and to be replaced. this holds the tub from moving when in the wash cycle. thanks tallpaul

Everything is working except the spin cycle

Sounds like the spin coil/brake solenoid is burnt out or broken. This is a coil situated on the motor plate under the machine with a lever attatched to it. When the machine goes into spin cycle, this solenoid pulls the brake away from the outer drum to allow the drum and agitator to spin together. The shaft that goes into this coil should move in and out freely. If tight, replace spin coil/brake solenoid.

GE WSM2780W Stacked Washer spin cycle

With no clothing in the wash tub take the following steps:
1. remove the front cover from the wash tub
2. run a full cycle of laundry and observe the tub's behavior

Potential Solutions:
A. If the tub begins to shake wildly during a full wash cycle with no clothing in it then you will need to adjust the 3 large springs on each side of the tub until the unit is working in a more-balanced position. This is simple to do by hand. If the tub appears to be shaking too far forward, then unhook the 2 large springs in back so they are tighter. Then run a full wash cycle again with no clothing.
* note: there are smaller springs too - you don't have to adjust these to fix your issue

B. If the tub works fine with no clothing during a full wash cycle, then try to load your clothing in a more balanced fashion. For example: if your wash load is only a small kitchen or bath rug then when the unit spins it will spin off balance with a wet & heavy item on only one side of the tub.

C. If you'd like to replace the 3 large springs, I can get you the part numbers. There are specific springs for both sides of the wash tub and they are different part numbers. The full replacement of the 3 large springs can be done by hand.

thanks,
Chris I.
