No, it only works when it is needed. A laser has limited working life, and to extend the working life, they will not work when there is no command. It will turn of automatically when there is no disc.
BTW, you may also meet problem of no disc error even there is a disc in the drawer. You can check this guide for help.

There are a lot of DVD players having "no disc" issue especially after years of using. Then how to fix the "No disc" and let the player play your disc successfully? If you are sure that there is something wrong with your player, you can press the "Eject" or "Open" button on the DVD player to disc tray to determine if it opens easily and does not appear jammed or hindered. If the disc tray appears to open slower than usual or fails to open, the disc may not sit flush in the tray or otherwise be seated properly. Most of the DVD "No disc" problems are caused by the glitch of DVD laser lens. You can start out by trying to blow away the dust, if that doesn't work, you can try using a DVD cleaning disc. If you think it's too expensive, you can also open the player and clean it manually.

All my DVDs say "invalid" when I try and play. This just started all of a sudden. Was working just fine before.

Always first unplug for a minute and make sure the discs are VERY CLEAN. Sometimes my player/recorders give an error message 2-3 times but eventually are able to load the disc.

Will not read disc

As it's less than a year old the manufacturer's warranty should still apply.

Your player probably has a failed laser head unit; if you have to pay to fix this fault then you'd be better off just chucking it away and buying a replacement as it will be cheaper.

How Can I Fix My Laptop DVD/CD Player? It's Not Working Right Anymore

Provide a CD/DVD cleaner disc and clean it maybe it help;
I encoutered that problem 3 months ago, the DVD ROM recognized only few DVD disc, other DVD's won't even the windows is freshly installed. The laptop was return back to the store they replace it.

However, in your case; it work fine before so maybe i suggest you to clean your DVD rom using the cleaner, if not work then , scan your computer with a potent antivirus, if this not work also, maybe i recommend to format and reinstall the system,

If all of those are not working maybe its time for you to enjoy the warranty of your laptop if the laptop has a warranty. hope this help.

Samsung 3650 dvd/vcr player loading problem

Sorry, no suggestion other than don't buy Samsung. That's my conclusion after owning the same model. It worked fine for a while, but now won't load any DVD... usually. Sometimes it will play one, but more often it won't. Mine tries to load ("Loading") for a long time, I hear the DVD spinning, then ultimately the screen displays "This disc cannot be played" or something to that effect.

Could be the dvd player/lens. The player sucks up dust through the
player's caddy and after a while it won't read discs anymore.
A cd cleaner or a good (gently dosed) blow with compressed air might help.

DVD Player will not play 20th Century FOX disks

The Panasonic is not "region restricted". This is a security safeguard by studios to keep people from region 1 from using region 3 content. Some material is released in other countries first and later in others. This keeps other regions from using the content from other parts of the world before it is relaesed by the studio there. Your Zenith is not a region free player and the Panasonic is. There is sometimes hacks on Videohelp.com for DVD players to be set to "region free" but not all DVD players are built with it. SONY is another non-hackable DVD player.

Dvd "unknown disc" message coming up

Have you tryed to use a lens cleaning disc yet. The laser lens on these players and recorders alike, must have the lens cleaned every oince in awhile. If that does not help, most likly you have a bad laser pickup assembly and you will need to replace the plaer as to have that repaiered, you could buy a new unit. Good Luck
