None of my USB ports are working. I think it's a hardware failure in my laptop (HP Pavilion dv5000) because I cannot use any USB devices even before Windows Vista boots up. Before I used to connect a wireless mouse or a flash drive and use it with no problems but now I cannot use anything. When I plug it in I do hear a sound from Vista but nothing is detected and then I get an error message that USB is not working properly? How can I fix this? Is this expesive to fix? Does this require changing a major part like the motherboard?
Check device manager. Try reinstalling or updating drivers.
Slow down take a breath,no its not 200 buck fix.
relax
first off that PC has more than one USB port
ill assume all are dead and no external USB hubs used.
first lets do the simple mouse.
you heard the Dingdog,so PNP is alive.
at pnp it finds the old local driver for mr.unnamed mouse,if that fails, at it will on a new mouse
it then looks in the local PNP cabs, for the matching PNP driver,
this can fail easy on newer mice.
so then it looks on the internet (microsoft directed)
but you must be connected to the internet
to get this far, ARE YOU?
so PNP can find the drivers.
boy vista drivers might be lean....vista is ugly OS.
lets see,ever look at,(drum rollllll) HP.com
that is not spam that is the official source of
perfectly matching drivers.
the mice have 1000s of makers, and not the same
so when you plug it in, 1st time, pNP will try to find local driver.and most times fail. (even my simple Logitech files
but in device manager, right click the dead mouse name seen there. and pick ,up date driver
must be on the internet, wifi or wired.
bingo it finds it
if DM has huge errors all over,
here are your drivers.
all drivers for you pc, at hp.com
can be downloaded and force fed
the are exe files and run and load.
we cant guess what version of vista is on your machined, real HP Vista
or was installed by others, from MICROSOFT
AND MISSING ALL YOUR HP DRIVERS. OR SOME.
ONLY YOU AN LOOK AND LEARN THAT.
HP.com (all key USB drivers are there, for sure)
your dV5000 is not a correct name see bottom of Lt

down load the matching driver for vista there.
simple answer(aBOVE IS SPOON FED)
your USB drivers are dead!
install the correct drivers from HP.com
ask.
Point 2, kick Vista to the curb.
UPGRADE or live in h3ll from now on.
Vista is a dead product,
I bet all USB ports are not dead.
I bet any simple USB mouse or simple usb keyboard works!
on all ports for sure USB2 ports.
I bet you have no internet connections there for USB Plug so play feature is dead, (lame)
start simple leave BT and USB HDD be for now
test using simple things, USB, mouse/kbd.
if those work then now you know
the USB port is not dead, right?
and if are they might be turned off in BIOS
so turn it on.
if say the keyboard KBD works.
then next with internet working ( a must)
you can try more advance USB devices, for sure non HP devices.
Those will need drivers from MS, Plug and play servers, and learn this many devices
sold flat do not support VISTA, (visa was lame and today is dead)
USB uses 2 drivers stacked (seen in device manager if you looked)
one for the USB port from HP. I bet works.
and layer 2 that new alien to Vista USB devices.
I bet Vista has the worst USB advanced support on earth then and for sure now.
I could fill a room full of USB devices
that Vista has no support.

Essentially, your USB controller/Hub has stopped functioning.
I would take this in 4 steps, for proper troubleshooting
1. First thing to do is to open up device manager
Windows 10 - Right click start button > Device Manager
Windows 7 - Click start > right click "My Computer" > click Device Manager
In there, locate "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" and see if any of them have a yellow exclamation point next to them indicating it has errored. Right click the faulty device, uninstall driver, then restart computer and see if functionality returns when it re-installs the driver automatically.
2. If this does not work, or if none of them are erroring, I would recommend finding the USB Bus driver(s) on the manufacturer's website and manually updating it/them (open the website associated with your computer eg; hp.com for an HP, then type in your model number in their support section, and click on drivers. Locate your USB drivers and continue from there).
3. A windows reinstall could also repair it, but that is an extreme and should be resorted to last.
4. If even that doesn't work, the device is damaged and most likely needs physical repair. If you have reached this point, I would recommend taking it into a professional as you would most likely need to know how to solder a new one to the motherboard, depending on make/model. Costs vary by professional.

Kindly Reinstall the Operating system. The common cause of the ports failure is due to drivers conflict, this can be caused by malware or trojan attack. Reinstalling drivers when the computer is infected by a virus is not advisable. Format the machine clean. If this fails you may need to replace system board. Callistus [email protected]

Usually answered in minutes!
pls go to device manager in hardware section and check universal serial bus + and connect the device, if open and showing unknown device pls check and remove usb driver and install the driver in hp web site or re install the driver.
Also go to bios and disable serial port and parallel ports to check conflict of drivers. you can run live disk like hiran and check the usb. also there may be a hardware fault ,need to check the circuit.
IF ANY DM LINES ARE WITH RED OR YELLOW
MARKS ;THOSE ARE BAD DRIVERS.
THE DM STACK must be clean.
on most hp laptops this is complex
some rely on others for functionality.
(can talk all day on that)why?
so, that means no errors anywhere there
top to bottom.!
put all HP drivers in place Fresh.
HP.com has them all,so load them
now.
end the folly of guessing and fiddling about.
to know best methods to make your usb ports working you can read the blog shown in the link or contact customer supporthttps://www.hptechsupportphonenumber.com...
