On occasion, the 610 will take 'over the air' updates. Simply switch it on, select 'OK' or 'yes' when prompted, and leave it alone for a while until it updates. It should then reboot.

The GPS has detected that the maps loaded inside have been in place for a year or more, and is prompting you to update the unit with new maps. You do not need to update the maps if you are happy with the maps in it. The drawback is that since the maps were compiled in the unit, new roads, construction, etc. have been built or changed. This reduces the accuracy of the GPS, and can be noticeable when driving to a new location - when the GPS directs you to travel roadway that no longer exists.

You should log on to www.garmin.com to download firmware updates and learn about new maps that are available for your GPS. Additionally, speak to a customer service rep. if you have questions about software, firmware & updates - the help is free and there's no pressure to buy anything.

Can you update or download a recent map if your battery is not charged or will not hold a charge?

Your GPS have to be able to power on long enough for you to be able to install any map update. If connected to a computer with the USB cable that came with the unit, most units will draw power through that cable, thereby letting you complete the update. There are also units that either come with wall chargers, or have wall chargers available for purchase. While they are plugged into those chargers you should be able to power the unit up and do your update. You might want to check with the retailer that sold you the unit to see if there is a wall charger available.

I want to register my GPS Nuvi 255 WT that I bought at Christmas time, I havent used the unit yet. I didnt get any updates yet. What do I need to do? Thank you

Right now your unit will work right out of the box. If you want to register the unit with Garmin, then there should be a card inside, or directions for online registration. As for updates, maps will be updated every year, with firmware updates periodically added. For the first 5 years of owning your gps, I wouldn't recommend paying the map update fee, as they often contain very little new information. They mainly encompass new developments, etc.Lastly, be sure to enjoy your Garmin, its one of the best car gps devices on the market.

When I turned on my Garmin nuv 255W Car GPS Receiver it reminded me to update it because my software was over a year old. My question is how do I update if possible without incurring any cost? Andy

Hi soami696,

To update the software for your unit, free of charge, follow these instructions:

1. Go to http://www.garmin.com/products/webupdater, and download WebUpdater to your computer.
2. Connect the GPS unit to your computer using the Mini-USB cable.
3. Run WebUpdater and follow the on-screen instructions.

After confirming that you want to the update, WebUpdater will automatically download the update and install it on your device.

Reboot your GPS receiver, and you should have the latest updated software from Garmin.

For a copy of a manual for your series of GPS units, go to this link and download here:
http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/2675_OwnersManual.pdf

This manual covers operation of several 200 series Garmin GPS Receivers, such as 205, 205W, 215, 215W, 255, 255W, 265, 265W, 275, and 285W, etc.

Let me know how this works out for you, and if you need further assistance, I'll be glad to help. Thanks.

Regards, Bill

I need free updates for my magellan gps

if you are looking for map updates I have not been successful in transferring data from one unit to another. That requires their "process" experimentation on bypassing their updates on a older roadmate 700 series caused alot of pain.

If you need a firmware update that is available at their website

If you have a unit more than 3 years old don't waste money on updates the new roadmate 1430 or 1470 run about $150 and the 1 touch navigation is much better than the older software. There have also been MAJOR improvements in the GPS receiver and sensitivity is far superior to those units built even just two years ago.

My garmin gps 60 csx hangs midway during operation

Have you updated the unit's software lately? Free unit software updates can be found on Garmin's site. Search for your model as this software is model-specific. There was a new satellite launched in '08 which caused problems for some Garmin units, making some units freeze. The software update fixes this.

Please come back and advise us if this works, and rate our solution. Thank you.

Update the map on my gps

You did not specify which GPS model you have so I will be as general as possible to cover most cases.
If you go to the manufacturiers web site you can download (for a fee) updated maps. if you are not comfortable with this you can order a CD (for a fee) to be sent to you. you then connect your GPS unit to your computer and update the maps saved on it. Some units have a memory card with the map information, the manufacturer may send a new card with updated map info if this is the case.

Hope this is of some help.
