Bangs, thumps, grinding? If your washer is making a loud noise you can be sure it has something to do with a bearing. But which one? There are two common bearings inside washing machines: the rear drum bearing or a tub bearing.
I found this info below. Check it out for more help with your issue.

yes ..bearing on upper side of gearcase has gone bad probably from a water leak from tub seal

Well, Sounds to me like the Bearings are going out, but it could make that noise a good while, before it goes completely out.. Replacement would possably be more cost effective, Kinda hard to beleive !!!!!!

sounds like a bearing... although it could be the water pump... water pump is an easy fix... bearing is not an easy fix... take the belt off the bottom of the pump (under the machine) and see if it spins freely by turning it w/ your hand... or if it seems really stiff... if it looks good then it's def. your bearing...

Mine just started the same thing. the pulley on the water pump has a press-fit metal collar inside and and the collar is coming loose and rubbing on the metal plate that holds the pump. Sooner or later it will cut through and the pump will come loose, I'll bet that's what happened to yours. New pump for my model is $100, I'm looking for a cheaper price before buying one.
