my hp pavilion dv9000 will not power up, screen is black/off, the power light flashes (light with lightning bolt above it) and the wireless switch light is orange. i'm on the phone with HP support right now, they told me to unscrew my harddrive cover, and memory cover, to take out the harddrive, and put it back in, then disconnect the wireless card's gray and black wires, unscrew it, take the wireless card out, put it back in, reconnect the wires, and put the cover back on the memory and the harddrive areas. which made my laptop work again, but, now my keyboard/mousepad does not.

  • guyneedshelp Dec 22, 2007

i tried everything and the screen wont come on at all no matter what i try it seems like..it makes two distint noises..then powers down(or blinks for a second)then makes the two sounds again and then i can hear the fan start inside the pc..but then it stops..and just continues to do the same things over and over again...ok..i am officially getting upset!

My HP Pavillion dv9000 will not power up - the blue light where the power cord connects is on, but the power button does not boot up the computer. I tried some of the suggestions listed here, but nothing worked.

  • PhilEngle Dec 31, 2007

I'm having the same problem as described by 'guyneedshelp'. My pavilion 9000 starts to power up, and then shuts down. Over and over. After about 5-10 minutes, it will finally boot, after which it runs ok, and will re-boot without issue. I've owned for about 8 months. I've not contacted HP yet. I've applied all possible updates, include the latest bios update from November.

The same problem here...Can not get it to power up...Called the Hp technicians and they gave me directions on taking the hareware out and I could not get it out. Could someone help me on how to do that step. Thanks. It sounds like Vista is more of a pain to have.

I am having a very similar problem. My computer turns on the HP Invent
screen shows up and the Phoenix Bios Logo in the bottom right corner
and the esc and F10 in the left corner. The computer hums for a few
seconds and then shuts off and then turns on back to the same initial
    screen over and over.

  • JJtrouble May 01, 2008

dv9000 pavilian won't power up. Blue light on at AC adaptor port - swapped out AC power adaptor with one known to work - still won't power up.

  • howsweetman May 24, 2008

9 mo. old, shut down in sleep mode, came back 4 hrs later (running on ac) Screen black. Will not power up. Blue light around inserted AC is on. Tried removing battery and AC. Tried external monitor using Fn + F4 and this also failed.

  • Steen2 May 26, 2008

Had the same problem, I contacted HP under my service agreement and they inform me that I have to return the PC and they installed a new motherboard because they says that this is a problem that they are having with this model of their PC's the DV9008nr models, after doing this I have not had this problem since:)

  • Mike Ewa Jun 11, 2008

Same problem - will not turn on - but power light is on when plugged in.

Dead to the world - is it cheaper to get a new one than letting HP put in a new mother board? Will HP warranty a new mother board for more than a few weeks?

Seems to be a fundamental quality issue with HP's production process.

H.P.DV 9000 Notebook. If I restart or turn it off ,It will not restart ,just a black screen. If I close the cover down half way,or close alltoghether, the screen becomes blank, and have to do the process over again.H.P.is no help.I paid $975.00 for this piece of ****.I have to turn, turn off many times, before I get a error screen, that says windows did not shut down properly.Reads ,start in safe mode,or start normally. Also the computer locks up.I took it in to the locall computer repair shop, and they said I had a cracked motherboard. The cost of the board is almost $500.00 plus labor.I have had other problems with this computer, and have been turning it on and off for several months.Seems to be getting worse as time goes on.

  • uruiame Jun 18, 2008

Mine is about 18 months old. First the wireless went out and HP wanted me to send it back to fix issue. A few days ago I turned it on, it booted up then cut off and now no power. The light at the power cord is on, but no led.

  • destro3 Jun 21, 2008

my power light is on around where you plug in the ac adaptor but the power wont come on when you try to turn it on with the power switch computer just shut off and would not come back on

  • hp haituh Jul 02, 2008

my hp pavillion dv9000 has a black screen when trying to turn it on. the bkue light arounf the a/c adapter is on. the outlet works. the first to go was the wireless. hp said i had to send the computer back. i cant be without my computer so i had to buy a a wireless adapter. now my screen is black. i tried taking the battery out and back in. still no screen.

  • astute Jul 05, 2008

The screen remains black, the processor attempts to start but stops almost immediately. You can tell by the sound from the processor and the rolling fan. The light from the touch buttons are all on but the power indicator is blinking.

The blue AC light is on...this signifies that power is being supplied from the outlet.

The Battery-charging light goes off almost immediately and the laptop gives a beeping sound.

    STEPS TAKEN

I removed the battery and attempted to use it with direct AC supply. The same thing happened.

  • hjohnson1946 Jul 24, 2008

My computer shows the lights but no picture. It acts as if it is coming on but all the lights stay blue and it does not come on at all.

  • cmgalvin11 Aug 02, 2008

My dv9000 won't power up. I left it on and went away for a few hours. When I came back it was off and wouldn't power up. No sounds, no lights, completely dead. Tried it on three different functioning wall outlets.

  • rbyrd66666 Aug 09, 2008

I have the same problem with two dv9000's. Both are being fixed now.

solo enciende las luces azules y la pantalla queda en negro

  • Anonymous Aug 18, 2008

I had the same problem! Rai55's solution fixed my problem.

    I did the following:

Removed battery & AC adapter from the laptop and let it sit for 5 minutes. Plugged the AC adapter back in and held down the power button (turned on after 5 seconds not 30 like he suggested). Seems to be no issue.

FYI - You can do the same on a desktop (remove the PS' connection to the motherboard and hold down the power button); this will clear all power from the board and allow you to boot if something power-related/loaded is causing it to hang.

my HP Pavillion dv6700 CTO notebook doesn't power up...

it sometimes does but then shuts down without any reason

  • Adam Sep 10, 2008

I have the same problem with my DV 9000z... one day it just didn't turn on...i have the lights, but no screen and one small beep when you push the power button. I have tried all the steps with removing the battery, reseating the RAM etc...

I know about the extended warranty to fix this problem, i looked it up, the problem is, is that, they say to qualify for the free repair, you need to have a certain Product number and series number. My product number is right, but the series number is wrong according to their chart...

Does anyone know how strict they are on this? I am definitely having the problem described...and the machine is only 3 months past its one year warranty...has anyone tried to get the free fix and been denied?

    Thanks

  • tamera447 Sep 18, 2008

I am having the same problem. My DV9000 won't turn on. My product number is on the list, but doesn't match my serial number. Anybody have any luck with hp customer service to get the limited warranty enhancement recently? HP says I am out of warranty so I have to pay for the repairs.. $300!

  • barman89 Oct 22, 2008

I bought my dv9000 in june and i have the same problem. im in college so i need my laptop to be running right. i turn it on and the screen never comes on but everything else starts up fine. I wait a few minutes and i can turn on windows media player with the remote and it makes the noise so i know its just the screen.

  • newschik Oct 26, 2008

HP Pavillion dv 9000 was funky with finding my wireles network, etc...well, it stopped working completlely yesterday - blank screen, won't turn on, etc...I followed Stanis's link to the HP limited warranty service enhancement and found that there are thousands of us who have this problem! HP is sending box, paying for repair, etc.

You guys rock for sharing this knowledge. I'm really, really grateful for this site and the nice, helpful users...

Wish my luck that this is the fix I need...

  • bossbunch Oct 27, 2008

Ria55 helped me too.  However, I put the battery pack in and the same problem occures.  Is it time for a new battery pack?

  • cwarren01 Nov 01, 2008

I just bought a new AC adapter my my HP Pavillion dv900because the old one got bent out of place and my computer wouldn't charge. I plugged the new charger in and the charging light on the PC did not come on but the light around the charger port did come on. I need serious help.

  • Anonymous Nov 06, 2008

I had the same problem with my HP Pavilion DV9206 17". The laptop wouldn't find my wireless then finally quit working all together. I sent it in to HP for repair. The tech said they would replace my motherboard. HP had my laptop for a couple of weeks then called to say they found evidence of "spillage" in my computer. My son did spill some water on it but I had to issues with it after that other than the original problems that began before the spill. They wanted to charge me 700.00 to fix it. I told them not to replace anything that wasn't part of the warranty replacement program. A rep called me the next day to say my computer had been repaired and would be shipped to my home the next day. He said it should work just fine. I received it and it wouldn't boot up. I called HP and they said they weren't going to do anything to it unless I agreed to pay for the repair. The Customer service manager admitted that even though the problem was with the faulty part the evidence of spillage allowed them to not fix it.

got a hp pavilion dv9000 with an AMD processor, one day turned on, all the light on top (play, stop, skip, volume, etc.) and led comes on but nothing on the screen. Doesn't boot up, black screen.

  • xristos24 Nov 28, 2008

The screen was showing some vertical gray lines. I switched off my laptop and then few moments i tried to switch it on and it wouldnt start. The blue light is on but nothing works. Seems like a mainboard problem but dont know yet.

  • Anonymous Dec 06, 2008

same as described, power going into computer but it does not turn on. I called the support line at hp and explained that their website described the 'enhanced' warranty and they sent a box via fed ex. PC not back yet, but as long as you are patient and go through their diagnostics, you should come out ok. Have a couple of small screwdrivers handy.

I tried to turn on my laptop one night. I turned around for a minute, and think its working perfectly, I hear the fan going and I see the blue lights. When I come back, the screen was totally black. I tried clicking the enter button, and whatever possible. The screen just won't work.

  • abackshall Dec 20, 2008

I have th esame problem. did you resolve it? if so could you email me.

  • Anonymous Dec 26, 2008

Hp Pavillion DV9000- had it a little over a year without any problems. Then all of a sudden, just in time for X-mas, it won't start up. There is power because the lights come on like it wants to start up, but then nothing happens. The lights turn out for a quick second and back on again, almost like it's trying to start up. Called HP Customer Service. They are sending me a box to mail it in. Repairs will be free of charge. They were very pleasant to work with. I hope this solves my problems and that the return is speedy. Has anyone had their notebook sent off and returned. HP quoted an estimate time of 2 weeks, just wondering how accurate that really is.

  • variax Dec 31, 2008

I've had a Pavillion DV9000 for about a year and it only worked for the first month or so. Usually it won't power up at all. The lights come on and then go out before the screen lights up at all. Or it starts to boot and then goes black before I get the Windows logo. Or once in a while it actually gets to the Desktop, and then lasts about 5 minutes before shutting itself off.

  • gjohnson699 Dec 31, 2008

Mine died after 14months. bad motherboard which has been a problem for most of these models. They will extend the warranty but not if it has the Intel chip which mine does! HP knows of the problem but will not fix it!

  • Anonymous Jan 17, 2009

My HP Pavillion DV9000 is only 8 months old and it stopped powering up all of a sudden. We returned it to PC World who sent it away, they fixed ther problem saying it was the PSU (power unit) and also the motherboard had gone!!

  • Balloon Knot Jan 28, 2009

Have had mine since 2/10/08 and use it for work. It is on and used heavily for at least 14 hours a day, 7 days a week. I have never had any issue until yesterday.

Went to turn it on and the screen brightness was about 5% of normal making doing anything impossible. I couldn't tell what else was wrong, but I could not shut it down properly. I had to hold the power button to turn it off and it came back to normal after 3 or 4 attempts to get it running.

  • psugrad Feb 04, 2009

I had the same problem with my dv9000. I called HP and they first told me I had to pay for the repair because my processor had an Intel chip rather than the AMD chip that was under the extended warranty. I discussed it further with a supervisor and make my case that the exact same problem could be happening with the Intel chip board. I'm happy to say that Intel stood behind their product and agreed to fix it this time even though it was not under warranty. We'll see how long it lasts, but for now I'm a happy HP customer.

  • newguy_stn4 Feb 07, 2009

I too have the same problem...laptop turns on, no screen, then turns itself off and back on again. I also talked to HP tech support, mine is covered by the extended warranty and seem to be the motherboard that is the problem. My question is do I HAVE to leave the hard drive IN it when I send it in? They said I will lose ALL my files and pictures because they reformat the computer back to its original settings. All I need is the motherboard replaced. Lucky I bought a new Dell laptop a few weeks ago

  • ib4est596 Feb 10, 2009

My dv9220us has black screen. It seems to occur after a Vista update. This has occurred twice in the past six weeks. It makes the laptop completely unusable. I've tried system restore, updating BIOS, updating video driver but nothing works. HP has been emailing me things to try but nothing is working. Trying the F11 to do a complete system recover gives me an error on Recover7.exe. I have tried searching online and the only thing I can find is people with the same issue, but no solutions.

  • rdjackson123 Feb 12, 2009

This is freaking unreal I have a DV9000 that just all of the sudden rebooted itself when it came back it said "Operating System Not Found" so I was still under warranty sent it in they said since there was "liquid damage" they could not repair it for free it would be $900 I paid less than that for it......

In the meantime I went and purchased a DV6000 got it home after about 6 weeks it did the exact same thing....This threw up a red flag so I stumbled upon this site....I am talking to support as we speak and they keep saying the "liquid spill" voids everything, I keep pointing out it worked for 11 months after "the spill" and the brand new one did the exact same thing......This is UNREAL.....I have about $5000 worth of HP products at my home plus I am in charge of HP products at work and I WILL NEVER EVER purchase of an HP product as long as I live and I will spread the word to every single person I know NEVER BUY an HP PRODUCT...

Thanks for the $1000 PAPER WEIGHT HP!!!!

  • champagnepho Feb 13, 2009

My dv 9000 died last night with the exact same issues... wireless went out about 3 weeks ago. I just called hp, they are going to have it picked up.

My major concern, like everyone's, is why isn't this product recalled? It' obvious that they have serious issues. I had originally talked to a local computer tech company who told me the've seen hundreds of these, and that's in a small town! I have always updated everything, including the "HP Support" tool that comes with the computer. I upgraded the BIOS and so forth, but apperently, they have a sub par substrate that falls apart over time (according to the tech) That's something that should have been noticed and a general recall done long before now. Now I'm severally impacted as I'm a professional photographer who shoots tethered ( my camera is linked to the computer while doing the photography) as well, most of my work is done in the field and I shoot, process and deliver the images while on location.

I started out selling HP Vectra's in the mid 80's and they were amazing tools... now I'll never buy another HP again... this is my 6th and the quality has steadly gone down hill.

HP9000 with the Dual Centrinos.Same issue. Rest won't work.1st Level HP rep was nice but tried to say they, HP, didn't have that many folks wtih the Intel Chips complaining about it (yet!!). I wasted about a half-hour on the phone with him. I mean, he was polite BUT he wasn't gooing to fix mine for less than 300 plus box.

I'm going to call back and ask./demand a manager. Has anyone filed a formal consumer complains against Hewlett-Packard yet for this chronic problem?>

17 hours after my year warranty ended on my DV9000, it won't power up at all. HP "customer service" has been horrible and only offers me the solution of paying $400 for a new motherboard. I'm searching for a number that is IN THE US that I can call to maybe get a better response. I can barely understand anyone I've talked to so far, and they refuse to transfer me to a supervisor. HELP!

  • pumbanm Mar 16, 2009

Same issue--HP won't power up. I will never purchase an HP product again...ever! After being told by the HP service rep (a service center in India apparently) the total cost to repair a dv9000 I was unlucky to own just over a year old (after the warranty expired of course) would be $298 (including shipping I was told), I then spent another 30 minutes waiting on the phone to get another service rep to schedule the repair job. But then the second person then tells me with shipping and handling the total cost is actually $429. $298 to repair a design defect that HP should repair at its own cost is bad enough, much less $429 (which includes a whole 3 month warranty on the repair job...big deal!). I will never, ever purchase and HP product again...ever!!!

  • DriftwoodTX Mar 25, 2009

My 2year old HP Pavilion dv9000 did the same thing. About a week ago it shut down and would NOT turn back on. Took it in for repair thinking it was a bad power supply - tried a replacement power supply, tried taking out all the peripherals, nothing. Tech determined that the motherboard had a short or something related to the power supply. I heard the same story - it would cost $300 to replace the motherboard, blah blah blah.

To heck with it, I bought a Dell Studio.

  • cyndian865 Apr 03, 2009

I did the bios update recommended fro HP health check and my notebook went dead. I took it the Geek Squad and it was sent in. Got a message today that it needs a new motherboard at $700.00 plus! The thing is, after checking around I found HP KNEW THIS PROBLEM EXISTED and never bothered to notify it's consumer. And now my notebook is sent off somewhere and I don't know if I should even bother. With $3000.00 for the pc is it worth paying them the $700.00? I am very angry. I found that if this problem occurred within 24 months of purpose that HP will repair. I've had mine 25 months.,

  • xx_mani_xx Apr 06, 2009

My laptop is about 2 years old.

It has a starting problem becasue it doesn't turn on, it just has a black screen and beeps three times and then nothing.

It also has another problem becasue the wireless doesn't work.

I know that the wireless doesn't have a problem because it works perfect on my brothers laptop.

  • Anonymous Apr 06, 2009

My DV9000 won't put anything on the screen. Blue lights come on across the top of the keyboard for the DVD player, but no post or boot info. It stays that way.

  • worbit Apr 17, 2009

    Ordered on: May 18th, 2007
    Problem started: April 13th, 2009
    Product #: EZ345AV
    CPU: Intel
    GPU: NVidia GeForce Go 7600

My computer isnt listed on their website of approved product #s but Im having a real hard time believing that my computer is any different from those that are effected. I have the same issues that everyone else is complaining about. My notebook will power on, but will not boot into windows and the screen stays completely black. All of my touch sensitive keys work and the blue LED lights come on. The same blue LED light turns on when I plug in the home charger. After reading up on this issue from various sites, HP should REALLY consider replacing these defective units.

I came across the following site which is taking names for a possible class action lawsuit.....

    http://www.sfmslaw.com/pages/cases.php?i...

hope this helps guys. Im currently on hold with a CS rep and they keep telling me that they cannot help me. Im trying to get to someone above a tier 1 CS/Tech manager to get this issue resolved. wish me luck!

  • Anonymous Apr 18, 2009

Yeah, I've got the "Black Screen of Death" surf'n the web and then nothing everything froze. When I tried to reboot blue lights were all I got and then nothing. I am so mad I could scream!!!!! I have had it for 29 months and that is just past the warranty, really chaps my ***!! According to HP tech support they will of course take a look at it for $300-$400 but for not a ton more I can get a new one.thanks for all the help HP, NOT.

  • Ricky Hicks Apr 21, 2009

The laptop just doesn't come on anymore. I have led's and the fan will start for a few seconds. HP CS said that I was two months beyond their extended warranty coverage.

What is the problem with the board anyways? Is there something that can be done short of replacing the mainboard?

Where can I buy a replacement mainboard?

  • grindael Apr 21, 2009

I read through all of these, and tried them all for the HP DV9000. Nothing Worked. I bought my computer in May of 2007. It is 23 months since i got it and it just shut down and would not boot up except for the

blue lights. I called HP (getting the # from one of the threads here) and they were Fantastic. They told me my computer was still under warranty, and will fix it for free. They said Icould send it in without the hard drive, I have too much to lose to risk it, and there would be

no cost. They will send a fed ex box and it would be 4 to 6 business days on turnaround. They were very professional and curteous. This is

my third HP, and I was aware of the prob shortly after I bought it and did the bios updates. It lasted this long, and has been a fantastic computer except for this problem.. So to all those who think HP doesn't live up, i beg to differ.... april 2009... grindael

  • Anonymous Apr 24, 2009

Thanks so much to everyone. After reading this I took a chance and called HP and they are sending me a box via FEDEX and are going to repair the motherboard for free. He said it is a manufacturers defect and will fix it. I am so relieved as I just couldn't go buy another PC right now. They are allowing me to keep my hard drive at home too. So I guess it is worth a try.

  • lpedmonson Apr 27, 2009

My dv9000 croaked at 25 months and HP wants $400 to replace the motherboard. They do not care that their 24 month extended warranty is an arbitrary time frame for a known problem. Anyone filing a class action count me in!

  • missdelight0 Apr 28, 2009

Laptop was running on ac, Screen black. Will not power up. Blue light around inserted AC is on.

Tried removing battery and AC, but the laptop still won't turn back on. HP has replaced my mother board once. I feel like I wasted my money purchasing an HP.

What do you have to do have a lifetime warrenty on products that should last longer than 2 years. The mother board was just replaced about 4 to 5 months ago.

  • tbowker May 02, 2009

1 year old HP pavillion dv9000, screen black, all blue lights on at power up....wireless indicator light stays amber even when in the on position also and wireless is operating fine in house (I tested it). Any fix for this?

  • tecban May 03, 2009

After 22 months of reliable use sitting in our living room, our dv9500 had a motherboard failure today. Called support and were told our serial number was not covered by any extended warranty - but they would fix it for $430. I've owned many computers, and unfortunately this was our first and last HP. I'm surprised that even our unreliable old Sony Vaio laptop outlasted this dud. Bad show HP.

  • Anonymous May 11, 2009

I've had the motherboard relpaced twice on my Pavilion 9000 and yesterday it just died again. Black screen, 3 beeps when you try and boot it up.. No video at all, not even the boot screen. HP knows these are lemons and won't replace them. They expect us to just give up. I signed up for the class action lawsuit this morning, after getting put off by customer support. This is the third time this thing has died in less than one year.

  • Anonymous May 12, 2009

I have the same problem with HP DV9000 (9500 series) died. Only a year and a half old. It's the same problem as the 9400 series but I was told that problem was fixed and my model was not covered by the recall. I suggest sending a letter to Mark Hurd the CEO at HP to voice your opinion. You can email him on the HP website but it's just a generic reply. A letter to his attention only would be better. I know we won't get our computer fixed but maybe we can all make a point since we all own a bunch of flat paperweights now. I'll never buy another HP, my bosses Dell is 5 years and going strong. Very disappointed in HP's support and standing by their products when they have to know there is a problem.

  • ascendedsaie May 16, 2009

Same thing. My roommate's DV9000 has died 4 times in the past 5 months. He is in the military and will be deploying in the future. He's a afraid he'll be overseas and his only source of communication will be defunct. I can see now that there's not just a chance it's a certainty. I'll be searching for the class action lawsuit information.

I have the same problem my dv9000z does the three beeps and a blank screen. My laptop falls under the warranty but customer service says that cant helpme.

  • alexblundell May 11, 2010

I have had the exact same problem, all the blue lights comne on, butnothing on the screen. Sent it back under the "HP limited warrantyservice enhancement" and was all ok. Until now. Exacty the same issueand they have refused to fix it stating that the reapir was onlycovered for 3 months!!!

  • brandogrey May 11, 2010

Just got a HP DV9000. Out the box, it won't start. AC lights come on, the hard drive makes a little thump-noise, and everything shuts off for a few seconds, then it tries to start again, fails... If I try to turn off the computer (by holding the power button down for 5 seconds) it doesn't shut off the computer. I'm so mad that I just got the damned thing, and it's already a useless, blinking slab of aluminum. Should I return this thing, get a Dell... or spring for a Mac? I've got a little Dell Inspiron 2200, and it's like the little engine that could... just keeps chugging along faithfully. I want to throw this beautiful piece of **** against the wall and sue anyone who tries to console me! The Amazon dealer I bought it from tells me to jiggle the RAM sticks and see if that helps, but I don't want to end up with a high-maintenance laptop that I have to continually jiggle, adhere duct tape to, or otherwise rig just to get it to work!
I need a hug right now...

I just fixed my cousin's dv9000. did the same thing. try removing the hard drive and then hitting the power button. if it turns on then, then you know you have a bad hard drive. change hard drives and you are as good as new.

  • crazie_nate

it did the same thing to my cousin's computer. turned out to just be a bad hard drive. changed the hard drive and it worked. tried the old hard drive in an acer laptop and it did the same thing the HP was doing.

I had the exact same problem so I called HP support. The instructions were- remove power cord from lap top if power cord is connected, then remove battery, connect power cord to lap top then turn on lap top by holding power button down for 30 seconds. It booted up, no problem. The proceedure is to remove static electricity.

who would have thought a hair dryer to a laptop would have solved my problem. I did just as you instructed and vola!! she powered right up. I can not thank you enough. P.S. why does the hot air work?

  • nahant150 Oct 09, 2010

Hey mustachemike, Just wondering if your fix seven days ago is still working? My wife called with the same problem this morning. We lost our wireless a few months back and we are now using a wireless dongle. Getting to be one problem after another. Sounds like others have lost the wireless then had this problem too. How long has your fix lasted? Should I start shopping for another puter?

  • Anonymous Dec 15, 2010

I had an earlier solution (take out the battery then hold down the power button for a minute, plug in the ac and turn it back on, it DID work, but not THIS TIME). As ridiculous as it sounded, I tried the blow dryer, WOW, I'm typing this now from my computer. I'm going to save all my work and spring for a MAC very soon. My question is WHY? Why did the hair dryer work? I'm so curious! I used the blow dryer for 3 minutes on the fan, but not always directly to not "melt" anything, then I went and also blew the blow dryer on the keyboard and all over just to "air" it out I guess. I can't believe I'm typing from my laptop right now. Maybe a temporary solution again, but I still want to know "why" it actually worked. THANK YOU!!!!

  • SuperPancrea Jan 29, 2011

Amazing. I'm dumbfounded. The hair dryer worked! I didn't think it was going to, but after 5 minutes or so it suddenly turned on. I used the low hair dryer setting at first, and didn't get too close to the laptop. Then I tried high speed on the dryer. When that didn't work, I'd put the hair dryer right up to the fan opening for about 5 seconds (gyrating the hair dryer in a circle). I couldn't get the DVD drive removed, so I just opened it and blew some air in there too--not sure if that helped. But after about five minutes, it worked and it's been running for about 15 hours straight now.

  • brandongray Feb 05, 2011

HAHAHA i cant believe this.. after trying everything else and none of it working i see this stupid comment about taking a blow dryer to my laptop. after 2 hours of messing with it turning it on and off, holding the power switch, unplugging it and so on i figure well might as well give it a try just incase. so then im in my living room with my moms blow dryer in-hand, feeling slighty ridiculous for what its come down to, me and a blow dryer. 5 minutes later here i am on my laptop typing this i cant fuckin believe it. i literally started laughing once i seen it working lol
THANK YOU BRO!! youve saved my winter life from complete boredom

  • brandongray Feb 05, 2011

Not good idea. You can never determine which one will melt the plastic. The core problem is that GPU overheating. Since the GPU/CPU are combined on the later models. HP's suggestion was simply clearing/reseting the CMOS settings. Overheating can cause this problem and needs to be addressed by a tech. Though Youtube videos do cover some issues, many are bad advice and can kill your unit permanently. Be careful

Same experience, DV9060. Called HP, they tried having me do the reset by unplugging and removing battery then holding power button for 45 seconds to release static charge. Hitting power again showed same result. Holding F10 at startup did not bring up the BIOS screen so I was told it would require a motherboard replacement.

Waiting now for call about warranty approval, then for them to send me a package to mail it for service.

The solution below about removing the wireless card has solved it!!

The whole problem started when I removed the secondary hard drive from the laptop.

I tried removing and reinstalling both hard drives and no luck.

It wasn't until I disconnected and removed the wireless card that it was fixed. I powered up with the wireless card removed (and a 1GB memory module and the secondary HD) and VOILA! All is running smoothly. I've reconnected the wireless and tested it and the keyboard and everything is fine.

Will post again if i run into any problems. If the HP guy calls me back about the warranty approval, I'll tell him how to solve this issue. FIXYA!

OMG. I can't believe I just said that, but oh well. My computer would turn on for less than 1 second after pressing the power button, then turn right back OFF.

I was reading on my blackberry looking up on google solutions and didn't think anything would work. I am typing this from my HP dv9000 right now. IT ACTUALLY TURNED ON.

I took out the battery and ac. Did everything everyone suggested, but not sure which ONE actually worked, but I'm using my computer now, so IT'S WORKING.

HERE'S WHAT I DID:I held the power button down AFTER taking the battery out for 30 seconds. THEN I connected back the AC power (no battery connected yet) and held the "delete" button while holding down the power button. I was not believing it would work, but did it anyway. I did this 30 times, then held the power, delete and f1, no answer. Power delete and f5, no answer. Power delete and f7, power delete and f11. Then I put the battery back in and Power Delete and held it down. Then I just decided to hold down the power button for a while. For some ODD reason, the computer decided to turn back on!

I was NOT a believer in these solutions, they sound RIDICULOUS, but it actually WORKED. For NOW. I don't know what next time, but I'm definitely saving up to get a new computer just in case, and according to my friend, NOT AN HP. What a NIGHTMARE!

  • Anonymous Jan 23, 2011

My step-daughter's dv9000 has had this happen twice. The first time it happened I tried the remove power, hold power button then restart solution and it worked fine. Not this time though.

I finally came to an amalgam solution that uses parts of a few solutions presented here.

First, I took out the battery and unplugged the computer. Then took off the cover on the underside that houses the RTC battery and took out the RTC battery for a few seconds then put it back in. (And put the cover back on of course.) I then held down the power button for close to a minute, released it and plugged in the AC cord. It didn't power up but just did the same thing as before: blue lights come on for a couple of seconds then go off for several cycles. While the lights were going on and off I tried pressing f1 first then Delete but neither made any difference. I then thought of the generic solution when a computer is "stuck".... Ctrl-Alt-Del. I pressed and held these keys and, lo and behold, the blue lights stayed on. Upon releasing the keys the computer went through its BIOS procedure and then gave me the screen that Windows hadn't shutdown correctly last time. I chose Start Windows Normally and it went on installing. It stopped with just a black screen and the cursor showing. I then pressed Ctrl-Alt-Del and a Windows screen with options came up. I clicked on the red button in the lower right corner to restart the computer. It shutdown and restarted without any problems.

If one of the other solutions here doesn't work, give this one a try. It can't hurt.

After the computer was up and running I ran Malwarebytes and found a few dozen infected files. Not sure if this was part of the problem, but using a program like Malwarebytes and/or Advanced SystemCare should be something that we all use regularly.

Had the same thing happen to me. I just got off the phone with HP after $50 the problem was solved and simple. Take out the battery, unplug the computer, I know, you've all done this, but do it again. Then push the start button for 40 seconds, then plug in, do not put the battery back in yet. Start it up and voila! You will have power! No more expensive paperweight! I told you it was simple :^) I'm so happy this worked, of course the laptop was 10 days past it's warrantee, so I figured it was going to be expensive or require a new laptop, I'm just glad it was simple and relatively cheep to fix. Now I know what to do if it happens again.

Here's the solution I got from HP support today. I know you've done the first part before, so bare with me on this. Unplug and take out the battery of your laptop. Push the start button for 40 seconds, then plug the unit back in, do not put the battery back in yet, start it up and you should have power. You can now put the battery back in.

  • Anonymous Feb 16, 2009

For all those who's dv9000 won't boot up other than the lights. This is what HP support-who went waayyy above and beyond the call of duty to help me- told me to do. Unplug and take the battery out of your laptop, then press the start button for 40 seconds, then plug in the unit, do not put the battery back in at this time, then start it up and you should have power, you can put the battery back in at anytime now. Hope this solves the paperweight problems!

  • designitdeb Sep 05, 2010

thanks luvmyfurkids - your solution worked perfectly - I had tried it already earlier today but was only holding it down 30 seconds - Guess the extra 10 seconds does the trick.

most of these posts are all caused by not reading HP.com forum and the long power on reset(below)
PCs can lockup for 2 reasons. (not counting dead PC ,truly dead !)

1: stuck in sleep/hibernate mode, (bad drivers)
2: latchup, if you ESD zap or get lightening in the HOOD that comes on via wires to the PC
then it lathes it up. (most times harmless)
but the cure is easy and at hp.com
    here it is.
I call it the long hard power reset.
    https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c0...

if you upgraded to w10 with out, HP permission now the drivers are wrong and guess what #1
    happens over and over.

if that fails, there are actually hardware failures (not related to above)

there are 12 categorical causes, listed here.
    http://pcdied.com/dead-PC.html

this PC is noted for failures.
    DV series.
it has CCFL back lamp tubes.
that are dead, intermittant ,dim or yellow tinged. mostly no cure, unless $100 screen and labor costs are fun.
the next bad thing is if the PC DV
has the 2008 nvidia GPU chip that failes
for solder balls, BGA chip failure horror.
no cure, for sure.that. (witch craft and hair dryers ,endless wasted time)

This is a known problem by HP. Read here: Free Warranty Service for dv6000/dv9000 notebooks

I have two notebooks to send in. The reason specified on their service ticket reads: "Failure : APOLLO AND ATLANTIS MOTHERBOARD ISSUE"

The free replacement extends 24 months AFTER your original warranty.

My notebook wouldnt start, then I got it to start, then the wireless was missing, then it wouldn't start again.

  • Anonymous Oct 02, 2013

It appears that HP has removed all traces of page pertaining to the warranty and replacement of DV6000 and DV9000 models. The only remainders are forum posts from other users mentioning the warranty service on these models.

My DV9000 worked well till a couple of weeks ago, It had some issue with the battery not charging for two months or more but it worked well - no crashes - nothing it worked well, then a couple of weeks ago it stopped booting up. Followed rai55's instructions, took out the battery connected it to the socket and it booted up. Now from a cold start it only boots up this way. It will come up after hibernating /sleeping even if the battery is in, but if I shut it down, I have to take the battery out and boot it.

Applied the bios patch that HP put out.. battery charging still an issue and it still does not power up with the battery installed. The battery charging status is more descriptive and after the bios flash, it shows that it is not charging.

After a bit of digging around on google I realized that this was a wide spread problem and HP extended the warranty etc etc. I called and was told that there is a mother board problem and I was sent a box to send the dv9000 in for repair. I backed up all my data (the DVD drive works like a charm) and sent it in.

What followed is an absolute nightmare. I'm still trying to get it resolved with a case manager, but after this I don't want to buy anything HP.

Two very very rude support people claimed that there was liquid spill.. first that the screen was cracked and liquid from inside the LCD screen split. Then that I'd split some liquid on my notebook. Then that the mother board "melted" and nothing in my notebook was working:

Here's a partial list of things that HP says is broken in it:
Liquid spill
mother board damage
RAM is damaged
CPU, Video and Audio board, Fan PCMCIA slot
USB board damaged
Speaker damaged.

The status on my case page says.
Order type:PROBABLY BEYOND ECONOMIC REPAIR
Failure : SERVICE ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM
Warranty status:out of warranty
Service charge:$1080.34

My notebook was working perfectly well, I had no crashes, no blue screens. The only problem was with the battery charging and bootup with the battery.

From the Hp web site link: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?docname=c01087277&dlc=en&lc=en&cc=us

clearly from "Step 2: Identify the symptoms" there are three things that effect my notebook

  • The notebook has no power and no active LEDs.
  • The notebook does not start.
  • The battery charge indicator light does not turn on when the battery is installed and the AC adapter is connected.

What HP's support service is doing is just horrible. I'm at my wits end. HP wants me to pay more for their shitty product and the rude support guy wanted me to buy another notebook, because this one was toast.

Any suggestions on dealing with them. I've asked for pictures for the liquid damage.

Needless to say this is my last HP product. I don't like being jerked around.

if you DV is 2008 ,made many PC ,makers had this issue, even dell.
using nvida GPU chip, BGA failure

your failure was to not buy new battery
they can fail in 1 year flat.
buy battery the blame the battery maker
to lay blame first prove what failed.
learn this, HP does not make batteries.
    ok?
just like my new car, car has warranty
but not on battery, brakes, and belts..
the glove box has a delco battery warranty contract. ever read that?
and only THEY warranty it, if at all.

of the BGA GPU chip failed, that
is half. HP and Nviada both, to blame.
I push down on the chip GPU and if the screen wakes up, bingo , you got solder ball failures.
thanks to the USA EPA mandate dead line
for lead free PCs. (2008 vast PCs failed fast for this) and blocking vents helps it alone.

  • Anonymous Jan 16, 2019

if they tell you beyond repair,
that means water damage or in this case
    there GPU chip failed.
that means they were too cheap to replace the whole motherboard.

    beyond repair.
water (keep kids away for high end PCs)
buy $100 chromebook and lit them wreck that.
    dropped ,more kids"?
    GPU BGA solderball meltdown;
or acts of God, lightening hits, near.!
or other random chip failures not on the the other 10 modeled inside but on the motherboard.

or put PC in truck of car, in hot summer sun
then took out,, and used it red hot like this.
    this was WRONG.
Laptops are fragile, the newer ones are even worse, like the cracker thin x360 convertibles.
kids playing ball ,ball hits screen oops.
    or PC falls
or PC lid closed with something left on base top (kids toys ,or objects small,, bam , lcd wrecked, damages like this are not covered
    on any warranty by anyone.

  • Anonymous Jan 16, 2019

if wise do the this is power resets fail
    turn on pc
and using 2 hands torque the base casing
twist it gently but firmly like binding a cooky sheet,
screen wakes up, or get lines on Lcd
    BAD GPU
DO SAME TO SCREEN FRAME,GET LINES, BAD LDC.
    A SAVVY Tech does this
then push down on the H Key on the keyboard hard and power, does the GPU wake now.
    remove keyboard,
push ******* GPU,power on does the GPU wake up now.
see Im not helpless, i know that the BGA chip
ball grid array ,balls are cracking on all 2008 PCs. so.....
what I do is walk outside and yell like this
EPA You SUX. (the real bad guy was him)

mandates that, never buy things that are just mandated new radicall changes.
if you buy used MOBO it will fail to.
    it is that bad.

Stannis was completely right about this issue and there being an extended warranty on the dv 9000, there are multiple other machines that are also affected by this, so if you are having these kind of issues, bring up his link and call hp, I expected to get the run around, but the HP support was quick to help me once I brought up the extended warranty from thier website. The first tech I talked to the other day said that I would have to pay about 500 for the repair and new motherboard, but the guy I spoke with today said they will just put in a new motherboard and send it back free of charge...including shipping both ways...Awesome link Stannis! Saved me some cash...just wish I would have found it before I bought a new laptop! No biggy kids can use it I guess...

Called HP - usual no help just offer to ship away and pay $300 plus to get repaired. NOTE: The dv9000's have defective motherboards. I ordered mine in December of 2006 online. AMD dual-core, 2G RAM, twin 120G hard drives ect..my machine would have problems with WIFI (not working) unit got very hot upon running for an hour or two, I fixed the problem one or twice by reseating the RAM chips. What is happening with these big 17inch machines is that the fan design is faulty causing motherboards to overheat, and the monitor hinges on the left side (fan side) will crack from overheating.
To resolve; I did the following;
Pressing pwr button/30 sec and power cycle with ac and
batt aswell, I blew hot air from "Blow dryer" - in about the cooling fan and processor fpr 2-3 minutes. I then started pressing power button, several times - it started to last longer on starts - then shut down - continued with dryer and pwr button and the darn thing
started up and booted back to os. WOW! I know it's not fixed but
for now I have a working pc to back up data and allow time to
(evacuate) whats on it before the next time it dies.
---GOOD LUCK --

Call HP. The dv9000's have defective motherboards. I ordered mine in December of 2006 online. When I called HP, I gave them all my laptop info like the model number, and serial number. Explained all the problems with not being able to power up the machine, cracked hinge ect.. they mailed me a box postage paid, I mailed it in and it came back totally fixed. They even replace my power cord which my Jack Russell chewed on a bit. Great customer service. Call HP, if you get someone that doesn't want to help, call back and talk to another customer service rep. I'm extremely happy.

My HPdv8000 would not boot. The power/LED lights turn on, but no windows. No option for BIOS either. Sometimes I would get a triple beep. First I removed the battery and held down the power button to drain remaining juice(some models have a reser button on the bottom of the laptop). This did not work. My second remedy was to remove the RTC battery. Instructions can be found here http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00554540.pdf

This worked like a charm!

OMG! I had already resolved myself that tomorrow I would be going out to purchase a new laptop. Like several here, my computer would power up, cycling the blue lights but no display activity. Removing the battery, plugging in the A/C adapter, and holding the power button down for 30 seconds worked. Like another poster here, while holding the power button down, the power cycled off again, but I continued to hold down the power button for the 30 second count. Hit the power again and it booted up. And this, after an hour in chat with an HP tech rep, who offered no assistance whatsoever.

Use Rai55's solution, it's solution number 11, and it is the best way to relieve static electricity that has accumulated in the computers guts. (take the battery out, plug in AC plug and hold power down for 30 second's, then turn on the computer like you normally would)

I am having a very similar problem. My computer turns on the HP Invent screen shows up and the Phoenix Bios Logo in the bottom right corner and the esc and F10 in the left corner. The computer hums for a few seconds and then shuts off and then turns on back to the same initial screen over and over.

I went to the HP website and it was suggested that I open the cover where the RAM is located. Open it up and remove the RAM and then put it back in. It worked.

I hope I have reached you with this info before you gave up. I have the HP Pavililion 17" dv9000 running win 7. the graphics card driver keeps shutting down, but it come back up quickly. Last week I was using Office & running a video as well and i felt it getting hot in my lap. All of a sudden the screen made a popping sound and the computer crashed. IT WOULD NOT POWER UP AT ALL!! but the blue light where the power connector entered the laptop was lit blue. We took out the video card & re-insulated it with a penny. etc.... put it all back together and i could have died when it wouldn't do anything at all still. We tried everything. Finally a friend called and said that i needed to reset the static charge in the computer. He held down the power button for a long time and my laptop powered up like nothing had happened at all. I hope this helps you.

Call HP. there is a Mother Board recall with your name all over it.

  • Anonymous Sep 11, 2010

Get real. The warranty for 98% of these customers has been out for a long time. It's called "planned obsolescence." This is the trick used by big markets designed to cause timely breakdowns. I'm suffering from the same problem as everyone here with HP. My plan? Toss it and buy a Mac.

  • Anonymous Jan 16, 2019

    not true at all,
EPA caused this, lead free solder PCs 2008
and the new solder failed, it melts at too low of temperature. blame EPA for deadlines so short.
Nivida chips on most pc's not just Hp failed.
    facts.all.
and is not the only common failure
    battery bad is next
then CCFL backlamps dead at 5 years old
    then HDD dead
or you upgraded the OS and now the HP drivers are wrong, self inflected done.

Same problem and the only solution i see is to raise our voice loud enough so HP can extend the warranty for those models like they did for the AMD models

Check here on the official HP forum, guy called Joaquin Agatiello started a thread about this.

I want to add my 2 bytes to this thread as I have a dv9205us #RP115ua. I called HP last week and explained the situation to a CS and the agent was short with me and a bit rude. He claimed that the extended warranty time expired in February and I was out of luck. I called again last night really in hope that I could at least get a discount on a replacement mainboard as the new one costs around $350. This time the CS agent walked me through the standard tips: remove power and hold power button down, tap the F10 key. After nothing worked I was kindly told that HP will repair the unit and they are sending me a shipping box. I am told that the turnaround time is 4-5 days.

HP may have a change of heart.

If you have called HP and was told no, try again with another agent. HP knows that they are responsible for this and I am sure that they will rectify the problem before the expected litigation (RE:class action lawsuit).

Good luck all.

I had the same problem with a DV9000 (dv9205us). The troubleshooting procedure goes like this. Remove the battery and the AC power supply. Hold the power button down for thiry seconds and release. Then, replace the battery and the power supply and restart. If this does not solve the problem, it is probably a bad mainboard.

I was told by HP, and through research on the 'Net that HP shipped the DV9000 with a bad video chip. They were correcting the problem as best they could.

HP sent a box to ship the unit back to their service center and told me it would take 4 -5 days to repair. I sent it on Saturday afternoon and it was returned on the following Tuesday.

    I hope this helps.

I recently ran into this problem on an ibook. Did some searching to find out the solder joints on the video chip had come loose. They use solder balls to fasten this stuff and they crack from the flexing.
Get yourself a pentip torch and heat the video chip (Right beside processor) hot enough to melt the solder, but don't send the other curcuits across the board in doing so.It sounds outragous but it works!!!
I did to my dv9000 and it works perfect. Go to youtube.com and type in ibook repair and see some other ways to do this. Remember the video chip beside the CPU on the same side of the sys board is th one you need to heat.

Try to short the eprom near the battery bios pin 4 with 8 only for a second when you switch on the notebook. These will send the bios to default reset and clear all the errors.Succesfully done it today with DV9000.

Killed by Overheating

Once the GPU overheats it will have to be 'reset' essentially by reflowing the processor. Complete disassembly and make sure the solder connections are intact. Videos are available for this task taking you step by step. I do not post them on YouTube because they would also be mixed with those that don't know, causing this information to be worthless.

The DV9000 Series is one of the last dogs of HP. So I created a blog related to all the problems, with solutions. What Kills DV Series Laptops Getting In Too Deep What Kills HP DV series laptops has been active over 6 years and 1/2 million hits. Use Google to refine the search of the blog.

Overall the problem consists of RoHS solder being used. The shrinkage factor is greater than Pb/Sn solder, so this was not considered in the engineering specs.

When the solder balls cools they contract. Ever so slightly, but enough to lose contact with solder pads if there was an insufficient weld during the Infra-red/hot air solder process. Combine that with transport times, nitrogen casing leaking when GPU shipped from manufacturer (on both motherboard and GPU) there is the likelihood of oxidation.

The site covers issues with DV6000, DV9000, and Compaq F700 series. Which are virtually identical. Major differences are
HP DV6000 - some with onboard video ram/or shared ram
HP DV9000 - has 2 SATA connectors
CPQ F700 - does not have PC Card slot, or IR remote

Comes in both processor types AMD & Intel with the AMD being the most prone to failure.

Take the time to read as much as you can. This was the only way I could share over 30+ years of Digital Electronics Experience. From Shuttles, Missiles, Hybrid IC, to MicroElectronics.

Issues covered:

  • Battery No Charge
  • Dead Laptop
  • No Video
  • Lines in Video
And lots more - Don't fall for shops telling you otherwise unless they have a solid reputation of repairs.

Relating to Static Electricity
There is no static electricity in modern laptops this is an old Urban Myth carried over from the earlier days. A broad metalic backplane & metallic surfaces disperses any static electricity. When someone tells you that, they don't know what the problem is (Even HP Techs).
Holding the power button 15 sec clears the BIOS information stored and it is reloaded from CMOS.

Your logic board is defective. There are two ways to fix it. You can reflow the logic board (repairs the solder connections) or replace the logic board. You can do it yourself or have a third party laptop repair service do it for you. You can try to replace the part yourself, it is available on any auction website. There is a Laptop repair guide that teaches you how to install the part yourself. Google how to reflow a motherboard and you will find ways to re-heat the board, chances of success of DIY reflow are around 50%.

DV9000 would not boot; removed battery as others suggested; held the power button for 40 seconds; voila! It booted immediately! My problem is the unit says the primary HDD is the secondary ... only one SATA HD installed. Now that's a poser. HP quit responding.
refurbman says thanks to those who gave suggestions.

    I had the same problem,:
Power on; Lights on, fan running and after a while a restart.
symptomsi had before was, moving the screen lid, it would filcker a little,
and also when closing the lid and i would find my laptop was starting to run again after a while.
The discharge trick did not work for me so i started to disassemble my dv9000 using this documentation http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01...
After every step of removing a part , i tried if it would work now.
I found that after loosening the 4 screw of the screen my laptop started to work again.
To do this you only have to follow the directions :
    5.3 Remove Battery
    5.10 Switch cover
5.14 Display Assembly (the first steps.)
    -----------------------
Thx to all who help me on my way,
PS: symptoms i had after the laptop started to work again:
"Windows telling me it had finished installing a update."
I mention this cos i had a problem before with my mini wifi
and that was after a HP software update. back then HP
replaced my mini wifi with out charge in a extended warranty
    program.

This may work for you, I had the same problems which recurs. I have found if you keep your finger on the F1 key when you turn it on, after a few seconds an annoying beeping alarm will sound but let go of the F1 key and the computer boots up normally. I don't know why but it worked on my dv9000

Attention: This problem is caused by the overheating of the graphic card chipset and consequently the melting of BSA solder, which is lead free.
The blowing of hot air through fans worked for most people because the solder comes back again to position. But, the problem will happen again soon when the vga chipset overheats.
So, the definite solution is to change the solder by one that contains lead by qualified personal and maybe, change the chipset also if any damage has been done to it.

Something i am still missing by problems with laptops BY THE WORD (STATIC ELECTRICITY) but this answer is not an little important thing, only if static electricity is in the question but some people do not realize that a laptop is in much circumstances working like a vaccuum, and the most important thing is a laptop is a note book for traveling to use it everywhere, and it goes with you from room to room and also in sometimes nice new wallpapered rooms, beware that in the most rooms where people have working old wallpaper chipped or having wallpaper paste toucheth insite the house the methyl cellulose floats everywhere insite electronic devices in priority modem devices and flatscreens can shure make a lot of unusual problems led that will burning that not can be burning but do it by creep strains also in devices that are realy not happy with static electricity, I have gained the experience to anyone with a newly wallpapered room which had stopped the cable modem from the phone and computer. the only way i remove methyl cellulose on the best way is with pressure air or with a canister lighter gas (outdoor) and a pliers in order to operate the gasnipple because of the strong degreasing action beware of parts that have lubricate like potentiometers or drives and fans. do not spray on things where are mechanic turning driving parts. but methyl cellulose (wallpaper paste) is one of the most underrated substance that can interfere so easy electronics in some cases it will be a problem that when something become repaired the cause can repeating the complaint if the electronic boards are not protected for this kind of dust that is hard to see inside , cleaning before every repair is very important. avoid repetition

My HP Pavillion DV6700 booted to a black screen (no power at display, led lights all on, none blinking) tonight after doing a windows update last night. It wasn't even getting to the BIOS test.

I took out the battery, held the power button down 40 seconds, plugged the computer back in (without battery) and then turned it on. BOOT UP!

Thank you to those on here who posted the solution!

Long Power reset fails) why the surprise???
ESD it is called, or bad drivers that cause sleep to fail( self caused by installing windows not using HP media kits)
    it's only 1 possible problem
    of 20
the laptop is not simple toaster on moms counter. ok
it is computer with 20+ chips and 10 or more modules. inside.
take the laptop apart, no cas just make the case go way
see all those parts, any can fail
as do all things made by man.
    called a life span,
all parts can fail, learn that and understand why. for sure laptop.
    laptops means getting tortured.
can you understand that? should be clear.

The DV computer like all made in 2008 basically sux. they suck swap gas.
the fist lead free PCs had those and all failed.
    not just HP.
what you failed to do is ask shop or technician to fully diagnose the problem
or did and failed to understand it nor believe him.
    it he said
    GPU dead
    water damage
    LCD damage
don't no call him a liar.
the problem is you not listening.

end. (it's computer not a toaster)

the other silly failures are not buying a new large battery. or just OMG leave it out ,forever.

Same issue, there is no lastable work around besides replacing the MOBO. Call HP and tell them that there is an extended warranty for this problem (at first they said I was out of warranty, but by mentioning my extended warranty they instantly let up.) I'd suggest brining you comp to a computer place if you want to keep the info on your hadr drive, but most likely they will just replace the MOBO so a reformat won't be necessary (from what i've researched so far on the web, also the service rep said this when i asked him.) Don't take no for an answer :) HP # 866 671 7362

    not true at all
the HP site clearly says blackup data first
why, well gee, HP erased it, fully
reloads it fully and then resets the warranty on it, see why? for 2 reasons
1: the will not be liable for your data be daft to do that, would you if your were hp. no.
2: they want the OS fresh, no virus, and the recovery tools and partitions brand new and clean.

if data is important, remove the hdd.
and copy it off the hdd ,,putting HDD in other good computer.
data is your responsibility in all cases
    keep your PC backed up.

HP pavillion dv9000 screen went dead -- black

Due to the overheating issues with the dv9000's it's more than likely the motherboard has gone bye bye. You can try plugging your laptop to a regular desktop monitor to see if it's the screen; but you would have heard it chime on if that was the case. Unless you had your volume muted before the incident. Try checking the RAM (one by one), then remove the hard drive and see if you see any graphics. If none of those work, prepare for a dv9000 funeral or punt!

HP Pavillion dv9000 - won't power up

There was a major problem with my old HP Pavilion, so major in fact that HP replaced it entirely.

IF you can get your laptop started, then try updating the firmware by going to hp.com and navigating to your particular model. The update you're looking for is BIOS Firmware.

If your laptop is still under manufacturers warranty, then yes, this IS a known problem, and they will send UPS to your door with prepaid packaging to return it to them. They are starting to catch up with the backlog but it seemed to be a frequent fault in the earlier versions. Happily they seem to have fixed it in later notebooks.

If you need the software or data from it, you will have to take it to a store who can remove the hard drive and copy the data off it. Where I live, in Canada, Future shop did that but it cost me $70. Unfortunately there is no guarantee if you bundle your notebook off to HP that they won't simply replace it, so weigh up whether the data on it is worth paying a fee to back up before you send it off.
