check your drain hose see if its too low lower than the tub or too far down in the drain as this will cause a siphon action

There's a couple ways to tell if it's the coupling.
One is to just tip the machine back a bit and look on the floor underneath for pieces of the coupler laying on the floor. :)
Also let it fill and check if it is agitating. I do a coupler repair a few times per week at least, and the customer always calls in saying "My machine will not spin"
When we ask if it still agitates, they often aren't even sure. Because they typically start the machine and walk away and come back later and find the clothes soaking wet from no spin cycle.
So check it out, it probably is the coupler (the clicking sound you described is a typical symptom)
Check to see if it agitates and if not, then you can figure a very strong chance it is a broken coupler.
