I am not an appliance technician, but older dryers are very simple machines when you get down to it. They are essentially a heater, a motor, a timer, and a bunch of sensors. Dryers can and do however start fires if not properly maintained or repaired, so calling a trained appliance technician may be your best course of action.

If this is an electric dryer and you are able to do some basic troubleshooting however, you can get an idea of what component is faulty with a simple ohm meter to check the heating circuit - which of course should start with the dryer unplugged!

Before doing anything else after accessing the heater compartment, I recommend a good cleaning by vacuuming and removing all easily accessible lint. It makes it nicer to work on and is good fire prevention.

The heater circuit typically consists of just three components, the heater element itself, identifiable as the tube looking thing with coiled wires in side, a high temperature fuse, and a temperature control switch. Failures of a component in this circuit comprise the cause of the vast majority of electric dryers failing to heat. All three will typically be daisy chained together in series making it a simple process to determine what has failed.

An ohm meter for a properly functioning circuit should show a very low resistance from one end of the circuit to the other. If any one of the three components is bad, the meter will usually show the circuit as open. You can isolate which component is defective from there by metering each one individually for high resistance or an open circuit.

If the problem is elsewhere in the system, it may be a good time to pick up the phone and get a technician on site. Troubleshooting the other sensors and controls in the dryer are a simple process if you know what you are doing, but figuring out where everything else connects and how it should test is a little more complicated, and consequently easier to screw up.

The high temperature fuse and temperature control switch are often sold in pairs with good reason. A failed temperature control switch may not test open. So a failure of the the temperature control switch can often lead to tripping the high temperature fuse, which does not reset. This happens because the temperature control switch is not shutting off the power when the heater is over temperature. So if either one fails, REPLACE BOTH!

It is important to note that if removing the main heater connection to replace the element itself, technicians will also typically replace the spade clip and wire that attaches to the element from the longer of the two wires. It is subjected to a lot of heat from the element and will fatigue to a point where it loses flexibility if it is wiggled around or disconnected and replaced.

So if you determine that the heater element itself is bad, plan on replacing that piece of wire with an inexpensive heater wire kit as well. Failing to do so can result in a fire. For whatever reason, these two parts are often sold separately, but replacing both is the safest course. It doesn't cost much, is easy to replace, and is good insurance.

Is yours the gas model? If so I need you to look for some things. Open back door panel and see if while trying to light the igniter is glowing orange. Sea Breeze

SOURCE: Dryer runs but there is no heat. Clothes spin but aren't drying. Any help is much appreciated!

On a gas dryer that will not heat, the first thing to check is the ignitor. The ignitor should heat up and glow orange if it is working. If not, the ignitor is defective. The next thing to check are the gas valve coils. These are electrical solenoids that are located just above the gas valves. When energized, they open the gas valves and allow the gas to flow to the burner and be ignited. If everything looks like it is operating well, but the dryer is still not heating/drying properly, the next thing that I would consider would be a faulty high limit thermostat. Sure hope this helped and best wishes.

Why do clothes take a long time to dry even if dryer is heating?

One basic reason is your washer could NOT be spinning most of the water out, therefore your clothes are wetter than they should be, thus taking longer to dry:-)

Whirlpool dryer is not drying properly. Have to go through a couple of cycles to dry clothes.

2 things are needed to dry clothes. 1 is good air flow. Check to make sure that the dryer vent is not clogged or partially clogged with lint. Also make sure there are no kinks in the vent hose. With the dryer running you should feel good air flow blowing out of the outside house vent. The 2nd thing a dryer needs heat. Check to see that the dryer feels warm to hot when you reach in to tough the clothes. It is possible that the heat element has partially failed. Another thing to investigate is how well the laundry machine is spinning out the water in the spin cycle. This spin cycle is used to get as much water out as possible prior to placing the clothes in the dryer. The wetter the clothes when they come out of the laundry, the longer it takes to dry them.

Thor laundry system won't dry clothes I have a thor no venting washer/dryer combo machine, that has been working fine for years. Suddenly it is not drying clothes and instead, clothes are soaking wet...

I am having the same problem on a WD9900A. The wash cycle works great. Spins fast and clothes are completely rung out. Dryer cycle heats up well. Fluffs and heats cloths. At some point during dry cycle water is injected on clothes and they end up sopping wet; much wetter than after wash. Filter is clear. Outlet pipe clear and functions well. Possible problem with dryer timer? Or washer timing kicking back on?

My roper dryer is spinning my electric meter like a top I replaced the heating unit but problem is still there on fluff dry no heat the meter crawls but low or high heat and the meter spins like atop

I am assuming that your talking about how much energy your using. When the unit runs on full heat, your electric meter will spin as you say like a top, this is quite normal. Electric dryers use tremendous amount of energy. Going on fluff your using just the normal 120v and not pulling many amps to run the dryer. However with the unit on high your pulling more amps and are now drawing 240v to operate your unit.
If your clothes are drying than it is not the heating unit.

If your concern is the amount of energy expended, there is always the old clothes line, which is energy efficient and if you live in a part of the world where the air is clean your clothes will smell fresher than if it came from a dryer.

Washer-dryer # wm3677HW will not dry, heats up, run, on and on

You're a moron. This unit washes and dries. That's the whole point of it. Perhaps you should do some research before answering the question. the most likely cause is the water lever sensor.

Whirlpool dryer won't dry

If your dryer spins and heats properly and the clothes don't dry, then very simply put, the moist air is not being taken away. If your drying temp is adequate, then the problem is with the exhaust. Go to where the air is being exhausted outside your home, if working properly, when you put your hand on the air coming out, it should get damp very quickly. And ALWAYS clean the lint trap after every load!!!!

Dryer heats and spins but doesn't dry. Perhaps the blower?

Remove the rear connecting vent and try it. If it dries then, repair the vent blockage.
It not, report back as to what does happens.
