Probably a worn-out bearing; try rocking the empty drum by hand within the tub. If it is loose on the hub, discontinue use to avoid further serious damage, and get a service engineer to take a look.

Testimonial: "is that the direct drive motor coupleing?"

You ask "is that the direct drive motor coupling?" No, it's the bearing between the tub and the drum.

    is it worth repairing?

"Is it worth repairing?" -a service engineer will give you an idea of repair cost, and the decision will be yours. There are numerous other possible causes for the noise (such as the drive coupling that you mention or the drive block or loose mountings) which would be worth fixing. I'm concerned that continuing to use the machine may cause a more serious failure, so I recommend you get someone to inspect it and give you an estimate. There's a very useful website called partselect.com where you can see diagnostics and the repair parts, where to fit them and how much they cost.

Make sure all springs are still in their place tilt the machine back and look under it and you can see them. 2nd all legs must be level as well as the floor.

How do I tell how old my kenmore dryer is?

What exactly is this 'loud noise'? Is it a constant grinding or rumble sound that changes with drum speed or is is an occasional thumping, banging noise as the drum speeds up or slows down? A grinding or rumble is often a drum bearing and Thumping is commonly the 'suspension' the drum rides in to stop it 'walking across the room or shaking itself to pieces as it goes into high spin speeds. Your machine's age will only affect you if it is a very old machine and parts are difficult to find.

Kenmore washer no spin

Does the washer drain the water quickly?? Are there any error codes?? Usually the drain pump sump is clogged and not draining, thereby not letting the unit advance to spin.

I have a front loader washer Kenmore Elite Model #796.40311900 that spins SLOW, not FAST as it should on spin. The digital readout works normally.

sounds like maybe drain filter is plugged and unit is not draining fast enough. if you have drain access in front pull it out and clean it.

What would make my washing machine leak water and make a funny noise?

this sounds like the main bearings have worn out (they start to rumble first) when they start to brake up they rip apart the water seals that are between them and the back of the washers drum, and then it starts to leak water, to test them to see if there claped out,,,, open the door and try lifting the top of the drum lightly , if it lifts a bit then drops back when you let go its the bearings going, now spin it by hand and you will here a rumbleing noise or grinding noise, when the washer is running on spin it will sound like the end of the world is coming???? im sorry to tell you this part is not cheep to fix, its 2-3 hours work?

Rumble/clacking while draining & spinning

Check for debris in filter of pump assembly. The filter unscrews out of the machine. It is located behind the bottom panel. Remove the two or three screws holding the panel in place, gently ply down and you will see what looks like a handle. It will be hard to turn but unscrew it and check to see if there is any debris. Have towels near by as there will be quit a bit of water coming out as you remove it. It the unit still makes noise there is a good chance the pump motor is going.
