First make sure that the contents are MP3, JPEG, or Windows Media Audio (WMA) format. Plug in the USB device. Next press the USB/Disc input button on the remote (top left below the power button) or press the Source button (left side to the right of the fast forward/next button) on the main unit of the HTS6510 repeatedly until you select this source. Use the Up/Down buttons on the remote to navigate through the folder. Press OK to play a file. To enter a folder, after navigating to the folder name, press OK to enter that folder. Press the Up button to return to a previous folder. I'm not sure if you can do this without a remote.
This is shown in the manual. Look at pages 9-10 for the buttons on the main unit and the remote. See page 34 to see the section on using a USB source. The support page for the HTS6510/05 is https://www.philips.co.uk/c-p/HTS6510_05/-/support . The current link to the manual is https://www.download.p4c.philips.com/files/h/hts6510_05/hts6510_05_dfu_eng.pdf .There is also the HTS 6510/12, https://www.philips.co.uk/c-p/HTS6510_12/-/support . The user manual is currently here: https://www.download.p4c.philips.com/files/h/hts6510_12/hts6510_12_dfu_eng.pdf .
I hope this helps.
