What I tried was pushing the lid down and I could hear the machine trying to kick into a spin so then while pressing the lid down i rotated to cycle knob slightly ahead and the spinning started. So I geuss I need to fix the connection between the lid and the machine?!

Based on your description, it sounds as if your outer spin bearing is faulty. See link below for an illustration of the bearing. Special tools are required to replace this item.
