George, did your your cleaning work and allow gears to mate/move parts?
Water path control system faulty.
The power-programme module (ELP) cannot register a valid position of the water path control unit within approx. 80 s of it being switched on.
You have to replace water intake system.

Same issue here with the Water Path Control Unit of Miele W 4840. No teeth broken on any gear, and the motor was trying to turn the gears, but the red gear was stuck. Found heavy buildup from hard water inside the rotating valve itself, and on the spring under the red gear. I think the buildup was preventing the red gear from lifting over the detents to the next position. I disassembled (be sure to first mark red gear and post as it can be reassembled wrong, and take care the spring doesn't launch the red gear and spring across the laundry room when you release the little clips holding the red gear) and soaked the spring and its washer in CLR (calcium, lime and rust remover, from hardware store) and swabbed the rubber and plastic pieces with CLR to clean everything. Greased gear teeth and posts, and rubber seals, with silicone grease and reassembled. Note the double-wide tooth on the red gear aligns with a double-wide gap on the matching white gear, the one with the spring contacts.

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France,
Sorry but this forum does not supply parts direct; it's just made up of ordinary guys and gals, probably at home, with experience of addressing problems and giving guidance for free on the web ;-0)
Spares Suppliers
You will need to type into your search engine/web browser '(make) washer spares' and you should be presented with a number of sources from which you can order. During the process you will be asked for the actual model number.
Alternately you could try telephone directories for spares suppliers but I would think the former would be more successful.
Good luck,
John C.
