Assuming it’s powered on, do you hear the “usb” sound when you connect it to the computer? If not, try a different usb port, or a different cable. If you hear the sound, check for the disk in “computer management”. It may need partitioned or formatted.

SOURCE: External Hard Drive No Longer Recognized

hey im the same person who just posted above. i went to WD's website, and it said unplug the hard drive from the computer, and unplug it from the power source. then plug it into the power outlet, wait for it to spin up, then plug it in via USB/Firewire, whatever. it worked for me, so hopefully it will work for you.

SOURCE: Laptop Won't Recognize External HD

You can try opening the device manager in Window XP and uninstall the external hard disk (make sure you show unplugged devices).
Then replug the drive again, and it should reinstall the drivers.

SOURCE: WinXP does not recognize USB device for Verbatim

Troubleshooting your USB hard drive in Windows see:
http://www.verbatim.com/support/support-article.cfm?support_id=7B8B6B2C-1422-1392-A8B4CF52416BBF75&supportType=Article

  • First check:
Link to determine the hard drive getting enough power:

  • Next check the hardware in My Computer > Device Manager if there are "yellow marks" for devices that require driver software to be installed.
When devices e.g. printer is connected before you installed the needed software, it can happen that the USB port is no longer recognized.
Then remove the device that shows having problems in the hardware manager.
Next install the software.
Connect afterwards or at the time the computer asks to do so.

SOURCE: I have an external hard drive back up, Verbatim,

Hello

A few questions that may confirm problem.
Does your computer seem to know that something is plugged in?
Or does it say that it does not recognize the device?

Well, if the computer actually knows that a device has been plugged in, but you just cannot see the device in my computer, here is how you fix that. Just follow these steps:
Control panel
Administrative tools
Computer management
Storage
Disc management

Now you should see your device presented in the schematic below.
Right click on the device and assign a new drive letter.

If your computer states that it does not recognize the device, try plugging it in one of the back USB ports of the computer. Please rate this.

Best regards

My pc doesn't recognize my verbatim 1000gb external hard drive, error "unknown device"

Did the 1000gb external hd come with instructions?
Did you read them?
Did you Install The Software for this Device?

If not. Try plugging it in all the usb ports.
Try shutting down the PC, when it's off plug in the 1000gb external HD,
Restart the Computer, If Windows still dosen't recognize it, then it's most likely defective, and should be returned. Try purchasing a higher quality brand.

My verbatim usb external hard drive quit working on only one of my computers. I tried using computer management but it doesn't recognize it there. it does show up as Toshiba in the device manager but...

The brand of your HD is Verbatim, so it should not show up as Toshiba in the Device Manager. Your computer is detecting another device.

Please do not rely on the Device Manager, you have to check the Disk Management instead. If the HD did not show up in the Disk Management, try connecting the HD into another USB ports of the problem computer. It could only be the USB ports of the problem computer is bad.

How many computers do you have? If you have 3 PCs and only one computer is having a problem, then you might need to update the USB driver of the problem computer.

Have a great day!

New verbatim 160gb usb external hard drive model # USB160 isnt recognized by my pc.

I had a simliar problem. This is how I fixed it in XP;

Remove any attached external devices except the one having the
problem.

Go to:
1. Control Panel
2. Administative Tools
3. Computer Management
4. Under Storage right click on "Disk Mangement"
5. The bad drive should show up as Disk 1 with a black bar across
the top.
6. Right click on the bar.
7.Select " change drive letter and paths " and follow the instructions.
8. If number 7 does not work, go back to the menu and select
"Format". During the FORMAT I believe you will be asked to assign
a drive letter.
9. GOOD LUCK

I acutally had this problem with two different drives. I fixed the first one using the instructions above. But the second drive didn't even show up in Disk Management. I had to return it for a new one.

USB External hard drive 160 GB not recognized by desktop Windows XP OS

Very possible your problem is that this drive is not externally powered and your desktop does not put out enough power to drive it.  I'm guessing your desktop is older.  Especially if your desktop is USB 1.0 this problem would occur.  Your best bet in this case is to either mount a newer USB expansion card into your desktop, or get another externally powered harddrive and transfer data over to it from this one with your laptop.
