Most machines have a switch that changes the sewing machine to free arm. Usually in front of the storage compartment.

you didn't put a model number in the question, yes, it's possible there is a switch or lever. if you have a manual it should have the information in it. but without being able to see the machine, I can't say for sure. try looking on youtube for a video. the next best thing I can suggest is calling a sewing machine shop in your area and ask them if they are familiar with the machine and ask them about the feed dog lever.

what type of sewing machine do you have, and have you tried turning it off, then switching back to the sewing position. you may need service, or an external bobbin winder.

Do you have it plugged in or is the foot unplugged? One time my electrical had popped off check brakers. Does switch feel loose when you touch it? if so switch could be bad unlikely but happens every so often. Did you forget to turn switch off or on. ?

the sewing machine needs to be checked, because it should not be change with out you changing it...

if turning the sewing machine off and back on again does not clear the problem, the taking the sewing machine in to be checked would be a good idea to see if there is something wrong with the motherboard or if the machine needs some type of adjustment.
