Large post , battery connection . Small blade connector , should be purple , will be hot when starter engaged ... black will be ground for solenoid if so equipped , does not matter how blade connectors are connected .. some have only one blade connector ...

I have a 214 kohler engine john deere lawn tractor, what point wires go to hot and the ground

if that is the Kohler 14 hp motor it may have the spark control untit on the motor cover. I recently ran into one like that and switched the coil out from a blown 20 hp kohler engine. I just taped up the excess wires and made sure they were not near any moving parts. The mower ran fine after that. Kohler wants about $160.00 for a spark control unit. There have been no repercussions since making the switch.

Valve clearances will also effect the decompression valve in the engine, if they are too wide the valve lifter will not work and the battary will not have enough energy to crack the engine.

Go to http://www.kohlerengines.com/manuals/landing.htm and enter your engine model number as instructed on that page. Kohler generally has service manuals avaialable on their site.. As an example, there are 2 service manuals for 16HP vertical-shaft engines available there (Courage and Magnum series) and 3 service manuals for 16HP horizontal-shaft engines (K, Magnum and Triad series).
